Bed Bugs Reported At Redding Hotel

POSTED: 6:42 pm PST March 6, 2012 REDDING, Calif. -- Mike Rigney said he was bitten more than 200 times by bed bugs when he stayed at the Motel 6 on Twin View Boulevard in Redding in February. The Shasta County Environmental Health Division checked out the motel. Eleven rooms were already blocked off and being treated by a local pest control company. They said as long as the rooms are being cleaned out professionally, then they just document it.We wanted to get the facts on bed bugs, so we went to Shasta County Public Health Nurse, Cindy Lakmann. She said bed bugs are more common than you think.Lakmann tell us bed bugs have "nothing to do with filth. Bed bugs don't transfer diseases to humans and they can be anywhere. Lots of times, they come from other hotels, other places and they hitch a ride in your luggage. Most people who get bitten by bed bugs don't know they've been bitten; they don't have any welts."Lakmann says you might be able to see bed bugs, if you know what to look for. They're rust colored and about the size of an apple seed. She said they're usually found in the sheets or under the mattress. If you get bitten, the only way to treat it is with over-the-counter itch cream.BED BUG REGISTRY
