Theyre baaaaaaaack!

Good night, sleep tight, dont let the bed bugs bite! was a popular twilight wish from parents to their kids, and for decades it meant almost nothing. Much like some of the old nursery rhymes, the true origins of the bed bugs biting admonition were lost to time.

Until the late-1990s. Thats when people in California, Australia, and Canada started complaining of finding bite marks on their skin, tiny brown bugs, and those bugs fecal stains on the edges of their sheets. Bed bugs, all but eradicated in the 1950s had returned.

The ancient Romans dealt with bed bugs, and they spread, along the Roman road, throughout Asia and Europe. Sometime around the 1500s, bed bugs started becoming a problem in the UK. Bed bugs later made their way to the U.S., burrowed down in soil that was carried onto and off of the colonization ships.

Prior to World War II, bed bugs were a huge problem across the United States. Advancements in personal hygiene and extensive use of DDT led to Cimex lectularius the Latin name for bed bugs being isolated solely to remote areas of Africa and Asia.

No one knows why bed bugs suddenly reemerged, although scientists speculate that they might have built up a resistance to the pesticides once used to treat them. Another contributing factor may have been a shift from treating baseboards for roaches and ants to using baited traps.

What is clear now, is that theyre not going away. Bed bugs have popped up in increasingly larger numbers since 2015.

Unwelcome House Guests

Bed bugs dont fly and you could be excused for thinking theyre mostly lazy except when theyre biting you. Bed bugs are hitchhikers they worm their way into your luggage, dirty laundry, and old furniture. Once they find a nice, comfortable place, they bed down and take a nap for a few days, or anywhere from two to six months.

They can even hop from suitcase to suitcase when stored in a planes overhead compartment.

And checking your luggage doesnt help either. When the temperature drops below 55 degrees, bed bugs can huddle up and hibernate for a few years. Which might be why bed bugs are having an even larger resurgence this year.

In addition to the usual suspect places, bed bugs have also been known to creep into purses, stuffed animals, school buses, and even, believe it or not, fluorescent light bulbs!

And unlike popular belief, the number one place youll find bed bugs is not hotels and motels. The highest percentage of bedbug infestations are located in single-family homes and apartment complexes.

In 2011, it was noted that one out of five Americans has had a bed bug infestation in their home or knows someone who has encountered bed bugs at home or in a hotel.

Chowing Down

Bed bugs suck your blood out for 2-5 minutes. That may seem like a lot of time, but remember, youre fast asleep. Theyre also hearty eaters for their size. Bed bugs can gulp down seven times their own weight in blood. Thats the same amount of liquid youd drink if you gulped down an entire kiddie pool.

A lot of people dont even realize theyve been bitten by a bed bug. Even the worst allergic reaction to a bedbug bite is similar to hives and is treated as such. The best sign to look for is brown streaks on the corners and edges of your bedclothes.

While every state even Alaska has bed bugs, they do tend to congregate in larger cities and communities. As of 2021, Orkin reports that the most infested cities include Chicago, Baltimore, DC, Detroit, and Columbus, OH.

Evicting Bed Bugs

Bed bug infestations are not difficult to treat. Its just a matter of patience and time.

The first step is to limit the contamination. Youll want to clear away clutter, and thoroughly wash sheets, stuffed animals, and any potentially infested clothing in the highest possible temperature water.

While the laundry is going, vacuum thoroughly. Then pull out, empty and seal the bag, and discard it into a trash receptacle outside your home. Preferably far outside. And dont bother with those cans of spray or bug bombs they dont really affect bed bugs.

If you have a really big bug problem especially in a condo or apartment complex you will probably need to call a professional.

Edmonton named one of the worst cities in Canada for bed bugs

One of Canadaslargest pest control providers has released a new list that no city should be happy to land on.

Orkin Canada has released its listing of the 25 most afflicted bed bug cities in Canada, with Edmonton landing at number 10.

For those not in the know according to the company, bed bugs are dedicated blood-feeding insects that can travel up to 100-feet in search of a meal. In the case of the most common bed bug, the blood they feed on is human blood, and dinner time is between midnight and 5 am.

To be clear, Orkin Canadas data is derived exclusively from the number of commercial and residential properties that have received bed bug treatment directly from Orkin between January 1 and December 31, 2021.

Orkin Canada

Thebed bug registry allows people to search for houses, hotels, and apartments that may or may not have had a reported case of bed bugs. It has information available for most major Canadian cities including Toronto and Metro Vancouver.

This year, Orkin reports thats travel bans, stay-at-home orders, and a shift to remote working has resulted in fewer bugs hitchhiking their way into homes. As a result, bed bug sightings have not yet rebounded to pre-pandemic levels. Dont celebrate yet, though, all it can take is an airplane seat, hotel bed or even an office chair for these pesky bed bugs to invade your space, the company says.

Compared to last years rankings, the City of Edmonton was a spot higher at number nine. Hey, at least we didnt go up in the rankings.

Vancouver went up to third place (from fourth), St Johns rose to fourth (from sixth), and Winnipeg dropped substantially to ninth place (from fifth).

As Canadians return to travel Orkin suggests these helpful tips for eager vacationers:

Due to their ability to double in population about every 16 days, it will not be difficult for bed bugs to regain their grip on Canadians. shares Orkin.

Bed bugs in Vancouver: Here’s where the city ranks | CTV News

Two cities in B.C.'s Lower Mainland rank among the top in Canada when it comes to bed bugs, according to a pest control company.

Vancouver came in third in the 2021 list, which ranks major cities based on the number of related calls made to Orkin Canada.

Nearby Burnaby claimed the 25th spot.

Orkin said the worst spot in the country for the bugs the company calls "extremely effective hitchhikers" because of their tendency to travel across rooms and along with luggage.

Toronto took the top spot, followed by Sudbury, Ont.

Also in the top 10 were: St. John's; the Ontario cities of Oshawa and Scarborough; the New Brunswick cities of Moncton and Saint John; Winnipeg; and Edmonton.

The calls made in those cities were for both residential and commercial bed bug treatments.

Orkin offered its advice to reduce the spread of bed bugs, which often enter residential spaces through travel.

"Bed bugs thrive in dark, cool places with long-term access to humans," the company wrote in a news release. "They can also be found on airplane and train seats, in buses or in rental cars."

Orkin said it's rare to pick them up in those locations, but it is possible.

Where people are more likely to encounter the bugs is in hotels and motels. For those types of locations, Orkin suggested ensuring clothing and luggage are never put directly on the bed.

The company said travellers should use metal luggage racks, as the bugs can't easily climb up metal surfaces the way they can on walls and wooden furniture.

Orkin also recommends packing clothes, shoes and other items into plastic bags, which can keep bed bugs that have crawled into a suitcase from getting into the house on clothing.

Anyone checking for bed bugs should also look at books, cloth toiletry kits and other personal items where they may be hiding.

These Canadian Cities Apparently Have The Most Bed Bugs & Ew, Just Ew – Narcity Canada

Bug-phobes be warned! While some Canadians will be no strangers to bugs, a new study has uncovered the cities in Canada with the most bed bugs and can we just say, ew?

According to pest control company Orkin, a whole bunch of Canadian cities actually have bed bug problems.

It determined the worst spots affected by looking at which places sought the most bed bug treatments between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021, in both residential and commercial spaces.

Unsurprisingly, the most bed bug-ed out city in the country is also the biggest Toronto. After that, the list gets a little more surprising.

Number two on the list is Sudbury and then comes Vancouver.

In the fourth slot is St. John's, Newfoundland, then Oshawa, followed by Scarborough and Moncton. The final three in the top ten are Saint John, Winnipeg and Edmonton respectively.

Interestingly enough, the major population centre of Montreal is all the way down at 17th place on the list. Same with Calgary, at 18, and Halifax, at 23.

If you're feeling a little itchy after this news, Orkin has some great tips to help prevent bed bug infestation.

When travelling, always store your luggage on the hotel's metal luggage racks which they can't easily climb up and put your clothes and other things in plastic bags.

The experts also recommend not putting your clothes on the bed, because if the bed is infested with the little beasties, they make expert "hitch-hikers."

Bed bugs love dark and cool places, which means hotels and homes aren't the only place they can be found. It's rare, but you can even pick up bed bugs from places like bus, train and airplane seats and rental cars.

And with that, we wish you sweet dreams!

‘Canada’s Top Bed Bug Cities’ Have Been Revealed & Montreal Isn’t Even Top 10 – mtlblog.com

Orkin has released its list of 'Canada's Top Bed Bug Cities' and maybe surprisingly Montreal didn't even crack the top 10.

The Quebec metropolis lands at number 19 in the list, which ranks cities "by the number of bed bug treatments the company performed" in 2020.

Toronto #1 Bed Bug City In Canada

So Montreal's low ranking could be explained by a less frequent use of Orkin compared to other pest control services in the city, but there's no way to know.

The number one spot of course went to Toronto.

It's followed in the ranking by Sudbury, Oshawa, Vancouver, Winnipeg, St. John's, Scarborough, Whitby, Edmonton and Ottawa.

"Bed bugs are extremely efficient hitch hikers," Orkin warns.

"They can move easily across a room and climb onto luggage or anything left on a bed in just one night."

The company's advice for keeping the critters out of your home include not putting luggage on beds when travelling, using metal luggage racks and packing clothes in plastic bags.
