I raise Monarchs in the summer and want to keep predators off the milkweed.

What can you recommend that won't also repel the adult female from laying eggs on the milkweed?

Srikanth R (author) on July 18, 2017:

Welcome.

tay gray on July 18, 2017:

Very helpful information. Thank you.

Srikanth R (author) on April 25, 2017:

Tomato leaf spray and garlic oil spray are effective against aphids.

Colin Peckham on April 25, 2017:

I have two problems in my very narrow shaded garden beds.

1. I get lots of aphids on my climbers, and ants travel up to get and harvest them. I would like to plant something underneath the climbers that would deter them, but its very shady at ground level, and the aphids are often at high level. Most plant deterrents appear to be sun loving herbs, so is there anything else I could use.

2. Ants: I am using diatamaceous earth which they dont like as well as taping the base of things and putting vaseline on it, and this seems the best way to stop them climbing up plants and structures.

Srikanth R (author) on February 23, 2017:

Yes. Also try camphor plant, sweet pea, lavender, daffodils and catnip.

Mary Norton from Ontario, Canada on February 22, 2017:

I was happy to have seen this hub. I plant mint and basil and love them in food but did not realize they are good for repelling insects. Do you have to put a lot of mint to repel mice?

Srikanth R (author) on February 06, 2017:

Hi Joyce! If none of the remedies I have mentioned work, it is advisable to contact an expert locally.

Joyce on January 30, 2017:

I fail in my attempt at organic gardening for the past two years. This is due to the fact, I have a infestation of Japanese beetles and aphids and spider mites. I have used milky spore for 2 years straight with only a small different with population of beetles. The aphids and spider mites have been resistance to even chemical pesticides. How can I get rid or keep these pest at bay?

Srikanth R (author) on August 25, 2016:

If you can manage to grow them indoors, if you have space, light, etc, nothing like it. You just need to ensure their good health.

CLD on June 10, 2016:

I have raised beds for my garden, do I have to grow these things inside or can I place additional pots around the boxes or sprinkle the herbs on the garden? What is best?

Srikanth R (author) on May 12, 2016:

Well, the fact is carpet beetles hate sweet woodruff. They run away from this flowering perennial plant.

Donna on May 12, 2016:

I've just seen a site showing carpet beetles feeding off the sweet woodruff plant, with statements by other people saying they've found this also. Your site says sweet woodruff repels them though! I'm not sure what's correct now - please help. Thanks.

Srikanth R (author) on July 19, 2015:

Basil is effective against most of these.

Howard on July 17, 2015:

In your introductory paragraph Srirad you mention Thunderflies (in the UK) but not which plant is the best deterrent. Can you offer more advice please? I have a problem with them crawling into my large computer monitor behind the clear and then dying inside to remain there forever...! Very annoying...! So I will need to place around the monitor whatever plant you suggest, is that practical?

Srikanth R (author) on June 12, 2014:

I am glad that the hub was useful.

Lizolivia from Central USA on June 12, 2014:

Very useful information. I grow many of these plants in the garden such as coriander, marigold, thyme, basil, rosemary, nasturtium, chives and mint. I didn't know about bay leaves repelling weevils in dry grains and the red pepper with dish liquid mixture to repel ants. Thanks for the helpful tips.

Masked Hunter – Insect Identification

The Masked Hunter may be a predator to small insects, but that doesn't stop it from inflicting painful bites on careless handlers.

Updated: 01/04/2022; Authored By Staff Writer; Content http://www.InsectIdentification.org

The Masked Hunter adult primarily eats Bed Bugs and is active at night. Sightings of Masked Hunters indoors are usually a result of a bed bug presence inside the home. To eliminate the Masked Hunter, its food source -bed bugs- must be removed. This process usually requires the help of a professional exterminator. In nature, Masked Hunters also eat roly polys (wood lice) and earwigs in the absence of their preferred food.

* MAP NOTES: The territorial heat map above showcases (in red) the states and territories of North America where the Masked Hunter may be found (but is not limited to). This sort of data is useful when attempting to see concentrations of particular species across the continent as well as revealing possible migratory patterns over a species' given lifespan. Some insects are naturally confined by environment, weather, mating habits, food resources and the like while others see widespread expansion across most, or all, of North America. States/Territories shown above are a general indicator of areas inhabited by the Masked Hunter. Insects generally go where they please, typically driven by diet, environmental changes, and / or mating habits.

SIU identifies man shot and killed in downtown confrontation with Windsor police – Windsor Star

Article content

Ontarios Special Investigation Unit has identified the man killed Monday in a confrontation with Windsor police officers.

Allan Andkilde, 70, was shot after officers responded to a man attacking cars with a machete at the intersection of Wyandotte Street East and Ouellette Avenue.

The SIU, an arms-length government agency that is investigating the incident, said paramedics took Andkilde to hospital where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

He was a flawed guy, said Ted Andkilde, the mans nephew. Despite the fact that he was family and I loved him in my own way, I dont fault the police in any way. I understand the situation that they were facing and I hope the best for them and their families.

Police responded to a 911 call around 2:30 p.m. about a man wielding a machete and threatening people, according to the SIU.

There was an interaction between Andkilde and police. One officer deployed a conducted energy weapon. Another officer shot him, the SIU said.

The downtown intersection, which police shut down immediately following the shooting, reopened Tuesday afternoon.

The agency has assigned six investigators to the case.

The SIU said Tuesday it has identified one subject official the officer whose actions may have resulted in the incident under investigation along with five witness officials.

Subject officials are not compelled to submit to an interview or provide notes to the SIU.

The witness officials, who were involved in the incident but not under investigation, are required to submit to interviews and hand over their notes.

In Edmonton, Allan Andkilde was sentenced to five years in prison in 2015 for slashing a mans neck. He attacked the man, an employee of a property management company, because he was upset over bedbugs in his rental suite.

But Ankilde had family in his hometown of Windsor, where he returned to a couple of years ago after living out west.

If You See Murder Hornets, Call the Authorities Immediately – Best Life

The first murder hornet was reported in the U.S. in Aug. 2019, but these creatures made headlines last year as more emerged amid the COVID pandemic. The pesky insects are a menace to humans, but they pose an even more significant threat to honey bees. And if these hornets wipe out our honey bee population, we will suffer the consequences. As the murder hornets' hibernation comes to a close, officials are asking you to help eradicate the invasive species. Keep reading to find out what you should do if you spot a murder hornet, and for signs of infestation you need to know, If You Smell This in Your Bedroom, You Might Have Bed Bugs.

Murder hornets grow up to five centimeters long and have a wingspan of up to seven centimeters, a menacing stinger, and a large orange head, Vice reports. If you see an insect that resembles this description, officials urge you to call authorities and report the incident. Sightings of these hornets have mostly occurred in Washington state and British Columbia, but they could travel outside of these areas. If you spot one in Washington, report the sighting onlinevia email at hornets@agr.wa.gov, or by calling 1-800-443-6684.ae0fcc31ae342fd3a1346ebb1f342fcb

Vice reports that on March 17, Paul van Westendorp, an apiculturist with the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture said, "We would like to use the public's eyes to report sightings because we just don't have enough resources to be everywhere all the time." According to Vice, public reporting in Washington in 2020 led to 31 sightings, culminating in the eradication of one nest containing hundreds of queen murder hornets. "It's an absolutely serious danger to our health and well-being," Westendorp added. "These are intimidating insects." And for more insects to look out for, If You See This in Your Yard, Prepare for a Bug Invasion, USDA Says.

The murder hornets, also known as Asian giant hornets or Vespa mandarinia, pose a significant threat to honey bee colonies and other local insects that play an integral role in our ecosystems, Vice explains. Although the murder hornets don't tend to be aggressive towards humans, an Aug. 2020 article described a sting from one of thesehornets as "excruciating." The study also noted that, unlike honey bees, hornets can sting multiple times.

"This is not a species we want to tolerate here in the United States,"Sven-Erik Spichiger of the Washington State Department of Agriculture told the Associated Press (AP). In addition to reporting sightings of these pests, there's another step you can take to help eradicate them. And for more insect onslaughts, If You Live Here, Prepare for a Major Bug Infestation, Expert Warns.

Vice reports that scientists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Fisheries encouraged citizens to set a trap for murder hornets. To create a trap, lay out a mix of one cup of brown sugar and one cup of water to lure and trap the murder hornets. People should do this in April, as the end of the hornet's hibernation period approaches. Per the AP, Washington state officials will use an orange juice and rice cooking wine mixture to trap the hornets, which citizens are also welcome to try concocting. And for more up-to-date information, sign up for our daily newsletter.

Officials are working to pinpoint where exactly the murder hornets came from. By understanding the hornets' origin, experts can better determine how they are making their way across the Pacific Ocean. Spichiger told the AP that the current theory is that these hornets are crossing the ocean on cargo ships.
