The One Thing You Should Never Buy Used, Say Experts – Best Life

If you're a savvy shopper, you're well aware of the fact that you can save a lot of money by opting for used clothes, electronics, furniture, and countless other items. But if you're someone who loves nothing more than cruising Craigslist or shopping the nearest flea market for your latest steal, leading health experts would all urge you to avoid buying at least one item secondhand at all costs: a used mattress.

According to Consumer Reports, a good mattress has a shelf-life of only 10 yearsand that's assuming that the owner has routinely rotated it every two months during its lifespan and never allowed any children to use it as a trampoline for prolonged periods of time. If you're over 40, the report suggests that you may be ready to change your mattress after five to seven years, and entirely for the sake of your spine.

"When you sag, your spine gets bent, and that can lead to discomfort," David Rapoport, MD, professor of pulmonary medicine, critical care, and sleep medicine at Mount Sinai, told Self. That discomfort can unfortunately lead to both sleepless nights and chronic back-and-neck pain down the road.

But that's not the only reason to buy your mattress brand new and at a reputable store. Over time, all mattresses accumulate dust mites, which feed on your dead skin cells and wreak havoc on people who suffer from allergies. "Every mattress is a crime scene in terms of how it gets inoculated with mites," Glen Needham, a retired professor of entomology at Ohio State University, told Slate. "All you have to do is get a female dust mite to start laying eggs, and pretty soon you have a starter set going in your mattress."

If dust mites aren't scary enough, your used mattress could potentially arrive with even more unwanted company in the form of bed bugs. "One of the most common ways bed bugs are introduced to a home is through used and discarded furniture," Jeff White, director of innovation and technical content for BedBug Central, a New Jersey-based pest control company, told Vice.

As you're probably well aware, bed bugs are tiny insects that feed on your blood and can hide survive for upwards of two to six monthsin the nooks and crannies of your furniture without feeding. Plus, they are very, very costly to get rid of.

So if you're in the market for a new mattress, make sure you follow the guidelines outlined by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

"The easiest way to tell if you're buying new or used is to look at the label attached to the mattress," the FTC states. "In most cases, new mattresses will include a white tag or label that indicates that the mattress contains 'all new materials' Depending on the state, used mattresses may contain a tag, sometimes red or yellow in color, that warns that the mattress contains used materials. Federal law requires that any mattress that contains used stuffing bear a tag or label with that information. If you don't see any tag, consider doing business with another retailer. Otherwise, you simply don't know what you're buying."

So good luck, sleep tight, and don't let the bed bugs bite. And for more amazing advice, make sure you're aware of The Most Dangerous Pests Lurking in Your Home.

What is causing you to have crazy dreams during the pandemic? Experts explain –

Anxiety, changing sleep habits and binge-watching may all be seeping into your subconscious.

CLEVELAND, Ohio Have you been having strange dreams lately? If so, you are not alone. At the start of the pandemic, wild vivid dreams seemed to invade our sleep.

"People walking around with different types of masks, different types of breathing apparatuses. Seeing bodies in the streets, just lying there," said James Huetter of Lakewood, who has reported very strange, disturbing dreams since the onset pandemic.

"They're not nightmares, but they more than once have left me drenched in sweat and having like a real physiological response," said Stephanie Klein who also reports quarantine dreams have wreaked havoc on her sleep too.

Harvard researchers doing a coronavirus dream study found people's fears had morphed into bizarre scenarios during their slumber and shared them on Twitter using the hashtags, #quarantinedream, or #pandemicdream, as well as #coviddream.

"I've just seen dozens and dozens and dozens of every kind of bug in the world attacking the dreamers, swarms of flying insects, masses of worms, and grasshoppers with vampire fangs and bed bugs and everything," reports Deirdre Barrett, a Harvard researcher, and psychologist, about the study's findings.

Other respondents reported images of Tsunamis and lethal injections. These dreams may be disturbing, but sleep psychologists say, not to worry. Anxiety is more than likely, a major cause. And who isn't a little anxious these days?

"It's our brain's way of trying to clean out the files in a way and storing things. We don't have a real understanding of why we dream and that is hard to determine because we are only able to understand what people tell us and what they recall about their dream," explained Dr. Michelle Drerup, a sleep psychologist with the Cleveland Clinic.

Also in play? Many of us are actually getting more sleep these days. As we work from home, the need to get up early for those work commutes has disappeared. So we are getting longer, deeper sleep.

And our viewing habits have changed too. As we spend more time at home, we may be watching more television, especially those streaming services. That new series you are binging before bed could be creeping into your sleep.

"Part of what happens in sleep is to take memories or activities that have happened during the day and integrate them. The hippocampus is working hard to do that. And it creates memories. If what you put in at the last moment is murder, versus home building or a cooking show, or some other show. So as you go to sleep, that's what is going to integrate and it will get into your psyche," explained Dr. Wayne Pernell, a relationship expert who also coaches people on how to get the best rest in order to be productive.

Dr. Pernell recommends having paper and pen by your bed and doing what he calls a "brain dump" before you turn off the lights.

"Most people have quiet time as they wind down for bed and try to get to sleep. And then it's like 'Oh, I forgot that.' Guilt and shame start to show up. Write it down so that you don't have to ruminate on it. It will still be there in the morning.

Having a clear mind before you drift off to sleep can mean sharing fewer dreams with zombies.

Indianapolis jumped 5 spots on list of worst cities for bed bugs. Here’s how to prevent them. – IndyStar

Indianapolis has jumped five spots on a top 50list it doesn't want to be on.

Orkins 2020 Bed Bug Cities List puts Indianapolis at No. 9for bed bugs. Last year the city was ranked at No.14.

The list is based on data from metro areas where Orkin performed bed bug treatments between Dec. 1, 2018, and Nov. 30, 2019. Itincludes residential and commercial treatments.

If you're feeling itchy, just remember that it could be worse:Washington, D.C., took the No. 1 spot, dethroning Baltimore after three consecutive years at the top of the list.

Flint, Michigan, saw the biggest jump in rank, moving up 16 spots to 31.Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Toledo, Ohio, joined the top 50 list for the first time.

Here are the top 10 cities for bed bugs:

Bed bugs, which are typically 4-5 mm in length and red to dark brown in color, can travel from place to place with ease, including luggage, purses and other belongings, according to Orkin. The nocturnal bugs will come out of hiding to take "blood meals" from sleeping orresting humans.

Telltale signs of bed bugs could include small black spots indicating bed bug feces or nymph bed bugs in places such as mattress seams, bed frames and furniture, Orkin says.

Orkin suggests the following tips to prevent an infestation:
