Bed Bug Statistics Bed bugs have become more and more present as the population has increased and travel has become more commonplace. Now, bed bugs are able to commute from place to place by latching onto luggage, clothing, merchandise, and more. Before, bed bugs were usually able to move in the rare times that candidates traveled. As such, there are more reports of the creatures and the infestations affecting numerous establishments, from homes and apartment complexes to hotels and nursing facilities. In the last year alone, 97% of polled pest control professionals have reported attending to bed bug infestations. These individuals are usually called in to deal with another issue. The callers, in 84% of cases, mistake the bed bugs for fleas. Less commonly, they believe them to be roaches. Mixing up fleas and bed bugs is actually quite common. Pest control professionals have to use a lot of resources and methods to eradicate the bugs, and 68% of exterminators state that bed bugs are the most difficult pests to get rid of. Reports have shown that the locations with high population density and poverty lines have increased occurrences of bed bugs. For example, Baltimore, MD, is the city with the most active bed bug pest control services. Los Angeles ranks 4th on the same list; on average, there are about 55 bed bug reports per month in the county of Los Angeles. However, this number can be deceiving; many victims of bed bugs do not make reports or let anyone know that they are suffering from such an infestation. If they do, they may be met with shame, face guilt, or feel embarrassment. Some landlords may also deny liability and not take the report seriously. Victims of bed bug infestations take legal action from time to time. Not every case is settled or goes to trial, but those that do wind up with the victims leaving with somewhere between $8,000 and $10,000 for their damages. Larger settlements and verdicts are more common in cases of extreme negligence or when numerous individuals are affected.

Where Does Louisiana Rank on the Worst Bed Bugs List?

When it comes to the itchy, crawly, blood-sucking bed bugs that keep people up an night, its always the big cities that are hardest hit. There are two reasons for this. The first is that there are more people living and working in large cities, creating a greater chance for bed bug infestations. Second, people travel to large cities, so there is a higher chance that someone from another state or country will bring bed bugs along with them.

So where does Louisiana rank on the worst bed bug lists? For once, none of the major Louisiana cities like New Orleans and Baton Rouge are near the top of a negative list in this case the worst states for bed bug infestations.

The states that continually top the charts according to pest control companies include the following:

These findings are based on the number of treatments that have been needed in these locations.

Even though we arent high on the worst list, Louisiana is not exempt from bed bug infestations, and these problems are becoming more common across the world, Louisiana included. At Dugas Pest Control, we work solely with Louisiana residents, so weve seen our fair share of bed bug infestations, even if they still fall under the radar compared to cities like New York City and Chicago. Nevertheless, all bed bug infestations are the same: difficult to get rid of.

Louisianas warm, sub-tropical climate is always favorable to bug species, and with large cities like New Orleans and Baton Rouge where many people travel to, there is always a risk of bed bugs. Although we dont want to it to happen, we expect to see more cases of infestations over time. In 2010, the bed bug problem started creeping toward our state. This same year, there were 16 LA hotels that had complaints against them for bed bugs.

So when asked the question of whether or not Louisiana will be as badly affected by bed bugs as large cities like Boston or Cincinnati one day, we can only assume that its a strong possibility.

Sky Harbor dealing with bed bug issue at Terminal 4 …

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - It's not the news you want to hear before the holiday travel season, but Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport says they're dealing with a bed bug issue inside Terminal 4.

An official with the airport says yes, bed bugs are here, but no, it's not necessarily a shocking thing.

They cited statistics that say 200,000 people travel through Sky Harbor every day, and officials told us with that kind of volume, sometimes bed bugs can happen. They say they are dealing with it as we speak.

They say the bugs were isolated in three padded benches located in the pre-security area of the airport. They got rid of those benches overnight, and this may not be an unexpected problem, but that doesn't make it less disgusting.

Bed bugs can live wherever there are people to bite, and they can even live for several months without biting someone. Which means they can linger for some time until they eventually find another food source, meaning another human being.

So sorry! I guess this is a downside to being in public areas, but the chances of you taking home a bed bug and then getting an infestation are low.

If you're still nervous, just know bugs need in these situations typically travel on luggage. So wash your clothes in hot water and dry th em on high heat, and maybe set the luggage outside and let it sit in the sun.
