The Problem With Home Remedies for Bed Bugs
Although there are a number of home remedies associated with the control of bed bug populations, it is advised that a pest control professional be contacted to address an infestation. Before administering any treatment of a pest problem, it is imperative that the pest be positively identified. Many pests appear similar to bed bugs and share their habits. Using the wrong treatment method will certainly prove ineffective and can be harmful.
Furthermore, most home remedies for bed bugs address only one area of infestation, and bed bugs can infest a rather wide area. In order to completely eradicate a bed bug infestation, the entire dwelling must be inspected thoroughly and infested areas dealt with appropriately. Thorough laundering of sheets, mattresses, clothing and pillowswill assist in preparing your home forprofessional treatment.
The most effective method of addressing a suspected bed bug infestation is to contact a localpest control company.Experts will conduct a thorough inspection toensure that your infestation is, in fact, a bed bugpopulation and will then arrange for appropriate treatment.

How are bed bugs spread?
How did I get bed bugs in the first place?
Bed bugs come in as stowaways in luggage, furniture, clothing, pillows, boxes, and more when these are moved between dwellings. Moving out wont solve the problem, since bed bugs will just come with you. In fact, while dealing with bed bugs its best not to sleep away from home. Used furniture, particularly bed frames and mattresses, are most likely to harbor bed bugs. Watch out for items found on the curb! Because they survive for many months without food, bed bugs could already be present in clean, vacant apartments.
In a few cases, bats or birds could introduce and maintain bed bugs and their close relativesusually bat bugs and bird bugs.
The source of the infestation determines where your inspection should start. Look through these scenarios and see which fits:
Only one bedroom: inspect that room first.
People watch TV or snooze on a couch: check it after inspecting the bedroom.
A traveler returned home: insects can hide in luggage and then crawl out when its dark and peacefulbegin where luggage was placed upon returning home.
A used bed or piece of furniture (bought or from the curb) was brought into the house: inspect it first.
The problem began after a visitor stayed overnight: inspect the beds that they slept in and where their luggage was placed. Next, inspect the nearest place where people sleep.
An infestation persists after several treatments by a professional: bed bugs may come through the wall from a neighboring apartment. Inspect rooms that share a wall with a neighbor. (This scenario happens in large apartment complexes and hotels where management didnt get adjacent rooms treated.)

State Investigates Misuse of Pesticide for Bed Bug Control
Agriculture Agency and Health Department Working to Contact Customers
News Release: July 10, 2013
Contact: Vermont Department of Health 802-863-7281
Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets Alison Kosakowski 802-272-4547
The Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets has summarily suspended the license of a pesticide applicator, Cary Buck of AAA Accredited Pest Control of North Clarendon, for misuse of a pesticide in treating a residence for bed bugs.
This action was taken after the Agency discovered that the company had wrongfully applied an organophosphate insecticide called chlorpyrifos to a home in the Rutland area. All indoor uses of this pesticide were cancelled by the U.S. EPA in 2001.
The Health Department is working together with the Agency of Agriculture to individually contact customers of this company who may have had their residence treated with this pesticide in 2012 or 2013, and is offering laboratory testing at no cost to determine if the pesticide is present. The Agency has collected a number of samples already, and will continue to sample in the coming weeks.
According to records obtained from the company, an estimated 50 or more residences may be affected, although the extent to which this pesticide was used in any application by the company, which operated in the greater Rutland region, is not presently known. Test results will indicate the presence of chlorpyrifos and any detected levels will determine the advice given by the Health Department for further action.
The discovery of misuse of chlorpyrifos by an applicator in Vermont is troubling, and we are working quickly to identify any customers who may have been exposed through this companys action, said Secretary of Agriculture Chuck Ross.
We are concerned about possible health effects, said Health Commissioner Harry Chen, MD. This pesticide can persist in the indoor environment, and exposure to high enough levels can affect the central nervous system and can be especially harmful to pregnant women and children. While we dont have any indication at this time that health effects from such exposure caused by this company have been widespread, we do recommend testing the residence of any customer identified so that we can take proper steps in the event we discover chlorpyrifos in the environment.

Bed bugs discovered in the Finance Building in Capitol …
Beds bugs have been discovered in a ground floor office suite assigned to the Treasury Department in the Finance Building.
A few bugs were initially discovered last week in the small confined area, said Treasury spokesman Gary Tuma. Exterminators were brought in last Wednesday evening to fumigate that room.
But the problem didn't go away.
A few more bed bugs were found on Monday and Tuesday of this week, prompting the department to have the exterminators return to perform another treatment of the same area on Tuesday evening.
Forty-four people work in that bureau, which Tuma declined to name.
"We believe we've identified the source and we are taking measures to address the problem in both our office and at its source," Tuma said. He declined to be more specific about the source of the problem, citing human resources restraints.
Nevertheless, Treasury and the Department of General Services will continue monitoring the situation and will take additional steps if necessary, he said.
He said staff in the affected area were informed of the problem once it was discovered last week and have been briefed on developments since then. A decision was made to alert all Treasury employees to the problem around mid-day Wednesday because more of the bugs were spotted this week, Tuma said.
Bed bugs are not known to transmit diseases but their bites can cause pain and itching.
In 2012, a bed bug infestation was reported at the Department of Labor and Industry building. Two years before, the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency had a report of bed bugs. Several school buildings since then also have had problems with them.
