Bedbug CSI Lab Uses DNA To Figure Out What's Biting You

It seems people are having some difficulty distinguishing bedbugs from other bugs that move into your home and crawl on your elbow at night. If you find a suspicious-looking brown thing in your bed, or suspect you're being bitten night after night, you can peruse a wealth of Internet photos, call in the bug-snuffing (and sniffing!) professionals, or torch all your belongings and flee town. But if you're not prepared to do any of those things unless you are 1,000 percent sure you're suffering a serious infestation, it appears you can just pop a cotton swab into an envelope and ship it off to Texas for DNA testing. The modern world is a marvel!

Real estate blog Brick Underground dug into the mysterious world of bedbug DNA testing todayapparently, for Dallas-based company BugLab ID can use the bug's DNA to determine a) if you are, in fact, being plagued by a few hundred dreaded bedbugs and, b) if yes, how severe said infestation has gotten. "Basically we come in and swab the surface, depending on what were looking for, and then we would take that sample and overnight it to the laboratory, company chairman Martin Hale told the site, noting that it takes about 24 hours for the lab to inform you as to whether or not you're under bug attack.

These entomological Gil Grissoms cost about $150 per visit (some exterminators charge up to $200 for preliminary apartment checks.) And since they're not going to make extra cash off your infestation, they're promising accurate resultsbug-sniffing canines have had some issues with false-positives.

This sounds all fun and science-y, but it seems like you're better off hunting for a bedbug yourself, rather than calling in a middleman. If that swab tests positive for buggies, you still have to shell out for an exterminator. And if it doesn't, you still have to suffer through a sleepless 24 hours while you wait for the results, whereas an exterminator's visual inspection will yield you an all-clear immediately.

What would be really great, though, is if science could come up with some way to determine whether that suspicious red mark on your body is a bedbug bite, and not one of a gazillion other skin reactions you could be suffering. Sure, a three-bite formation is the telltale sign, but sometimes bedbugs don't bite in threes, and sometimes weird hives you get after exercising pop up in suspect formations. Apparently even dermatologists can't tell whether or not you've been bitten by a bedbug, but scientists have managed to create Doritos-flavored Mountain Dew. Something is off with our society's priorities.

Ah, well. If you do find a suspicious insect in your apartment, save yourself $150 and consult this handy guide to bedbugs and their impostor bug friends.

Bed Bugs Biting in Missouri | KOMU.com | Columbia, MO |

COLUMBIA - Recent studies show bed bugs are at an all-time high nationwide, mostly due to a newly-developed resistance to commonly used pesticides. This problem has found its way to Columbia, as local living areas and furniture stores have had to take extra precaution to make sure that bed bugs don't infest their beds, couches and carpets.

The Salvation Army Thrift Store in Jefferson City recently came under fire for having furniture from its store infested with bed bugs. Regional coordinator Major Kendall Matthews insists that the store goes through every precaution to make sure that the furniture sold in the thrift stores are clean and safe for families. He said, "We want the community to know that we do not allow for any creepy crawlies in any of the furniture that we sell at our stores."

With bed bug outbreaks hitting all across the country, residents have to deal with a large hassle before finally getting rid of all the bugs. University of Missouri senior Laura Swan moved into a house that was already infested in July, and explained that she and her roommates had to perform extensive cleaning on top of hiring an extermination company.

Plus, the bed bugs leave a nasty bite. "The bites are super painful," Swan said."They're like a hundred times more itchy than mosquito bites, so it was miserable to be outside."

Because the bed bugs have developed a resistance to more basic and weaker pesticides, experts recommend calling a professional extermination company when dealing with a bed bug infestation.

Charlotte Co. movie theater treated for bed bugs

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, FL -

We have confirmed a Charlotte County movie theater has been treated for a bed bug infestation.

TheRegal Cinemas 16 Theater in Port Charlotte Town Center was affected.

The Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County confirmed they received a complaint of bed bugs on Nov. 7. An investigation into the complaint accusation was discovered to be true.

Move theater employees say the bugs were found in theater four.

"We went into the ladies room disrobed shook our clothes out and saw specks on the floor. So, it isn't just theater number four," Sherry Ballou said.

Dozens of our viewers reached out to us after our story first aired on Wednesday. They tell us they first told management about the problem back in September.

"We took them at their word that they would look into it, and it would be resolved because we said if it doesn't get resolved we will report it to the health department," Ballou said.

Officials with the Florida Health Department in Charlotte County tell us the theater was closed for several days as a pest control company treated the place. It has since been reopened.

"It just takes one female bed bug to hitchhike on one person. That person can take it into their home, and the next thing you know they have thousands of bed bugs," exterminator Keith Gross of Gross pest services said.
