Northeast Portland school battling bed bugs

PORTLAND -- A Northeast Portland High School has been dealing with a creepy problem: bed bugs.
"We were all squeamish and 'Eww,'" said Christina Rilatt, secretary at Alliance High, Meek campus, on Northeast Alberta Court.
According to district officials, an English teacher discovered the first bed bug in his classroom last week. Instead of throwing it away, he put the bed bug in a container and showed it to pest control.
Without that positive identification, we wouldnt have able to treat the problem so quickly, said Portland Public Schools spokeswoman Christine Miles.
On Thursday, the district brought in a "bed bug-sniffing dog," to sniff the entire school. The dog discovered traces of bed bugs in seven lockers, a classroom and pile of clothes that had been donated.
"All of those things were steam-cleaned," said Miles. She said this was the first time the district had ever dealt with bed bugs at any of its schools.
Miles said district officials werent sure where the bed bugs came from. They believed they have solved the problem, but to make sure, they planned to bring back the bed bug-sniffing dog in a couple weeks.

Company: Bed bugs on the rise in Dayton
By Amelia Robinson
Staff Writer
The Dayton area jumped four spots on Orkins just released Bed Bug Cities List.
The Gem City ranks 7th on the pest control companys list for 2013.
Cities were ranked by the number of bed bug treatments Orkin performed from January to December 2013.
The Cleveland-Akron-Canton area ranked sixth, an increase of two places from the previous poll. It was just below Cincinnati, which is in fifth place. Columbus ranks third on the list followed by Los Angeles and
Chicago in first place.
Bill Wharton of Public Health Dayton and Montgomery County said the number of bed bug calls his agency receives have not increased.
We are staying where we were last years, Wharton said.
Because the tiny pests that feed on human blood and often hide in beds dont carry diseases, health departments dont keep exact counts of complaints.

Bed Bugs in Illinois | Bedbug Extermination in IL
Bed bugs are on the rise all throughout the United States; and IL is no exception. In fact, due to the bed bugs in Illinois, the Department of Public Health is urging its residents to become educated on how to prevent bed bugs in the first place.
These fast-moving flat insects are brownish in color and love to hide in places like mattresses, bed frames and box springs, to name a few. At night, these bed bugs will silently and rapidly seek out its victim as they infuse saliva into its food source while sucking up the blood from its host. This occurs most often between the hours of 12 am to 3 am. Although you won't feel these bugs as they feed off of your skin, when you awake you'll soon discover red, itchy bite marks on your body. Bed bugs also feed off of your pets.
In order to reduce and eliminate any bed bug problem, you'll need to learn what signs to look for regarding a bed bug infestation. If undetected, your bed bug situation can manifest rather fast. Therefore, it's imperative to keep an eye out for this night-time pest so you can prevent the problem from getting out of control. Using light color bed sheets will make it easy to come across spots of blood and brownish specks of bed bug feces left behind on your sheets.
When you vacation at a hotel, checkout all along the mattress seams. Don't put your suitcase on the floor or on the bed; in fact, you should store your suitcases in sealed protective bags or garbage bags during your stay.
Second-hand items such as furniture and household accessories should be vigilantly inspected before bringing these objects into your home.
Change your bedding at least once a week as a standard household procedure. Use hot water to wash sheets; then machine dry everything at a medium to high temperature.
Once you have determined that you do indeed have a bed bug crisis, it's best to call in the professionals to get the job done properly. Yes, you can try to eradicate these bugs from your home on your own. There certainly is ample "do-it-yourself" advice available on the Internet; however if not done correctly, these bugs can take over an entire home promptly. A professional bed bug exterminator will alleviate this situation once and for all.
Get rid of bed bugs in Illinois with a qualified exterminator and never say, "Sleep tight-dont let the bed bugs bite" again.
Our exterminators can help you with:

NYC Bed Bugs: New York Hotels With Reported Bed Bug …
Before a person can prevent an infestation, it is important to know what they are, how they live and what they look like. Once you know what they look like, hopefully, before you bring them home, you can avoid staying in hotels that have them.
Simply, they are small parasites that live in mattresses and other types of soft furniture. They are nocturnal and are hard to spot during the day. They are oval-shaped, and once they have fed on blood are reddish brown in color. If you ever see an insect in your home or hotel room that is flattish, oval-shaped and reddish brown, you should catch it and try to identify it.
These parasites feed on blood, primarily human blood. This is a major creep factor is associated with them beyond simply having a home pest. They come out at night, crawl on your sleeping body and make a meal of you. Some people may find the vampire myth sexy but nobody, except maybe an entomologist, can say the same about these insects.
For most people the idea of having them is completely repulsive. They are sneaky, gross and hated around the world. They attack people when they are at their most vulnerable and leave few signs behind.
New York City is #1 in many things, but it was not prepared to become the American city with the heaviest infestation. There is a simple reason for this resurgence. International travel gives these bugs new homes quickly. New York City is certainly a major travel hub. Vacationers head to NYC but the main culprit of the outbreak is people who travel for business.
Vacationers simply go from their home to a hotel and back. They are much less likely to drop these parasites in enough hotels to cause a major problem; although vacationers are often a victim, and bring them home unknowingly. People in business spend weeks or months hotel hopping. As our society has become global these bugs have staged a comeback.
The U.S. almost got rid of them early in the last century. Then international travel became more common and people were staying in hotels in countries that were still dealing with them. People would go to different countries and bring home a little something extra in their luggage and clothing. The U.S. now has a new booming industry eradication of these pests.
New York City may have them but how does one avoid staying in a hotel that has an active infestation. The insidious thing about these pests is that they do not always live in the flea-bag motels. It would be easy to stay in a slightly more expensive hotel but that is no guarantee of an infestation-free accommodation. Actually, the more expensive hotels are just as likely to have infestations.
With the Internet age in full force there is a website that is devoted to the places with reported infestations. The Bed Bug Registry is a website where people can report their sightings and experiences. People can use this free resource to avoid bringing home an unwanted souvenir.

Bed Bug Sprays and Bed Bug Powders at Bed Bug Supply
We carry the most effective bed bug powders and sprays from recognized brands such as J.T Eaton, Mother Earth D, Destroy, Bedlam and STERI-FAB.
We carry only the top quality bed bug sprays, and are constantly updating our catalog to match the current needs of our customers. While most retailers carry sprays that use synthetic pyrethroids, which many strains of bed bugs have grown resistant to, we focus on products that are proven to be more effective.
Contact Bed Bug Sprays:
Bed bug sprays and powders are found in two categories: contacts and residuals. A contact killer works exactly how youd think it kills bed bugs on contact. This is a great solution for quickly cutting down on the population of a bed bug infestation.
Most common pest killers use a synthetic pyrethroid as their main active ingredient. These solutions tend to have very poor results when used to get rid of bed bugs, unless they are one of the newer formulas. A better alternative is to use a spray that uses natural pyrethrins. These are much more effective at killing all strains of bed bugs on contact.
Residual Bed Bug Sprays:
Contact sprays usually evaporate within hours. For long-lasting bed bug control, you'll need to apply residual compounds as well. Residuals work for up to 12 weeks. Chemicals like fenvalerate or imidacloprid will kill bed bugs and their eggs for weeks after application, ensuring that an infestation won't get a chance to repopulate after you douse them with a contact killer.
Its important to note that unlike pyrethrins, residual sprays can be harmful for people and pets, and should only be applied in cracks and crevices (areas that your skin wont come in contact with). Be sure to always follow the products label and MSDS for safe and effective usage.
