Everyone knows the old clich Dont let the bed bugs bite. The unfortunate truth is that those bites are becoming more common every day, right here in Saskatchewan.

Many people think that bed bugs have long since been eradicated. In fact, bed bugs have been around for centuries. Despite a significant decline in infestation rates during the last half of the twentieth century, bed bugs have never disappeared. Today, infestations across North America, including Saskatchewan, are showing marked increases. Just like the villain in a horror movie, bed bugs just keep coming back.

The small, reddish brown insects that create such significant problems feed on the blood of humans. The name bed bug comes from their habit of living in the mattresses and feeding on bed occupants at night.

Adult bed bugs have oval, flattened bodies, and are about 3/16 to 3/8 inch long. Their flat body allows them to hide deep in the cracks and crevices of any home or building. They are perfectly at home in mattresses and bedding, furniture, luggage and even vehicle upholstery.

Bed bugs come out of hiding at night to feed on humans, drawn to our body heat and the carbon dioxide we exhale with every breath. They inject an anesthetic into their feeding area, allowing them to gorge themselves for extended periods without being felt.

On average a bed bug will bite its human host up to five times before going back to the nest. Multiply that by 100 bed bugs and you may well be bitten 500 times in one night.

Consistent with the overall trend of increase bed bug infestations, an apartment house in Columbus was featured in a 10TV news story on the infestation. According to Dana Rose, code enforcement officer in Columbus, and the Columbus Dispatch, indicated that bed bug infestation reports are coming in "2 to 3x a week from all over the city."

With government funding shortfalls in Cincinnati, proactive inspections have ended with government focusing on lower cost education efforts. Cincinnati.com reported that there are approximately 12 bed bug infestation cases reported in Northern Kentucky per week (2009). Cincinnati State Representatives are calling for government assistance with the problem (2009). The Ohio State University extension recommends marking any discarded furniture that was thrown out due to bedbugs and to inspect hotel rooms before entering to determine if bed bugs are present, before bringing in luggage. Time Magazine has reported that the bedbug Cincinnati problems are so bad that some apartment tenants would rather sleep on the streets.

An article in the Cleveland Plain Dealer further confirms the Bed Bugs Ohio problem. A newspaper article on the bedbug problem quotes a representative from Orkin Pest Control who claims that in North Olmsted over the past 3 years (2007-2009), they've seen a +20% increase in bed bug related calls year to year.

Use a crevice tool around the perimeter of the room, and along all mattress and box spring seams.

Other helpful steps include vacuuming (use crevice tool for baseboards, mattress, box spring etc). and the use of a hand held steamer.

Steam heat exceeds the required 113F needed to kill bed bugs and bed bug eggs. You can steam all surfaces (make sure you aren't staining furniture by testing first), which is a safe, chemical free way to treat bedbugs. Consider steaming items such as the mattress, box spring, bed frame, headboard etc before using bedbug spray products.

Step 2: Spray Two types of bedbug sprays are needed to effectively remove bedbugs from the home. The first a knock down spray, kills bed bugs and bed bug eggs on contact. An assistant tennis coach at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, Donna Brumfield, and her group checked into the Palatine Holiday Inn Express in October 2012 for a tennis meet.

She ended up meeting bedbugs, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court. Before the ensuing ordeal ended, Brumfield was forced to chop off her cherished, waist-length dreadlocks she had grown for 13 years, the lawsuit alleges.

If you know how long it takes to grow dreadlocks, you understand the trauma of losing my hair, says Brumfield, of the south suburbs, who is in her 50s.

Harder to explain is the trauma that affects travel for me now. I travel a lot for my work, and every time I have to stay at a hotel I just get filled with anxiety, she said.

In the Chicago area named first in bedbug infestations for the second year in a row Brumfields lawsuit is exemplary of growing litigation over the creepy critters that have become a nuisance nationally, according to legal and bedbug-eradication experts.

The majority of the suits are between hotels and guests, or tenants and landlords.
