Bed Bug Biology and Behavior

Bed bugs are small wingless insects that feed solely upon the blood of warm blooded animals and people. Certain kinds inhabit bird nests and bat roosts and await the return of their hosts; others have adapted well to living in the homes of people.Colors range from nearly white (just after molting), a light tan, deep brown or burnt orange. The hosts blood may appear as a dark red or black mass within the bugs body. Because they never develop wings, bed bugs can't fly. When disturbed, bed bugs actively seek shelter in dark cracks and crevices. Because many other kinds of small brown bugs may be discovered, it is critical to ensure that the bugs are correctly identified. Bed bugs occur in all parts of the world. Bed bugs became relatively scarce during the latter part of the 20th century, but their populations have resurged in recent years, particularly throughout parts of North America, Europe, and Australia. They are most abundant in rooms where people sleep, and they generally hide nearest the bed or other furniture used for sleeping. Bed bugs are most active in the middle of the night, but when hungry, they will venture out during the day to seek a host. Their flattened bodies allow them to conceal themselves in cracks and crevices around the room and within furniture. Favorite hiding places include the bed frame, mattress and box spring. Clutter around the room offers additional sites for these bugs to hide, and increases the difficulty in eliminating bed bugs once they have become established.

What do other Companies Charge?

As the threat of Bed Bugs throughout the country worsens and the media coverage grows, pest control companies charge more and more for Bed Bug Control Services. As an average, most Pest Control Companies Charge from $600.00-$800.00 PER ROOM. Cobra Pest Control considers this highway robbery. The reason for these high prices is partly because very few Pest Control Companies actually provide Bed Bug Control Services. To justify these high costs other Pest Control Companies use scare tactics and convince their customers that you need to treat the Bed Bug problem up to 3 times. Cobra Pest Control will never use these tactics. Cobra Pest Control has been providing Bed Bug Control services in Rhode Island way before it was considered a major problem.

Penn Medicine Epidemiologists Find Bed Bug Hotspots in …

PHILADELPHIA A new study from Penn Medicine epidemiologists that looked at four years of bed bug reports to the city of Philadelphia found that infestations have been increasing and were at their highest in August and lowest in February. The findings, published ahead of print on January 8 in the Journal of Medical Entomology, point to two possible peak times to strike and eliminate the bugs.

There is surprisingly very little known about seasonal trends among bed bug populations, said Michael Z. Levy, PhD, assistant professor in the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CCEB), who mapped the bed bug hotspots in Philadelphia in an effort to find more effective ways to control them. We found a steep and significant seasonal cycle in bed bug reporting, and suspect that bed bugs have different levels of mobility depending on the season, and that their population size may fluctuate throughout the year.

Warm weather could be a driver for migration to other homes and breeding, he said. We may be able to exploit this cycle: These seasonal trends could guide control programs to help reduce a citys growing bug population, he added.

To track the spatial and temporal patterns of the bugs, Levy and colleagues, including first author Tarub S. Mabud, analyzed calls to the Philadelphia Department of Public Healths Vector Control Services between 2008 and 2012. They then mapped the phone calls to get a clearer picture of the problemwhen and where it was happening.

Reports came from all across the city, though south Philadelphia was the most affected by the bugs.

Overall, bed bug reports in the city steadily increased by 4.5 percent per month from 2008 to 2011, an almost 70 percent increase year to year. Nearly half of all pest infestations reported to the city over that time period were for bed bugs, a total of 382. From September 2011 to June 2012, Philadelphia residents made 236 reports of bed bug infestations, according to the study.

Infestations peaked in August and reached a low in February, the team found.

They most likely move more frequently during warmer months, with increased development and reproduction happening as well, the team surmises.

The next question is to determine if people should strike when the iron is hotor cold.

We know the bug reports fluctuate over the yearwhat we need to figure out now is whether to treat when they are at their worst, in the summer months, or whether to wait until their numbers are down in the winter. Levy said. Seasonality, we noticed, is just one attribute that can eventually aid control measures, but it is one of many attributes we hope to uncover.

It might be the Second City but Chicago is No. 1… in bed bugs

Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Although it would probably rather be known for having the countrys tallest building or the nations best pizza, Chicago has instead locked down its spot as the No. 1 city for bed bugs for the second straight year.

Pest control company Orkin gave the Windy City top billing on its 2013 Bed Bug Cities List, an honor which Chicago was unlucky enough to win in 2012.

The problem in Chicago has become such an issue that City Council passed an ordinance in July 2013 requiring condo associations to formally draft bed bug management plans.

The City of Chicago is committed to making sure residents have the best information to protect themselves from bed bugs. Most experts agree that public education and awareness are the best defenses against bed bugs, reads to the citys website.

Bed bugs can be found almost anywhere, from apartment buildings to four star hotel rooms. Recently, they have become more problematic," the city's website continues. "Possible reasons include modern bed bugs resistance to pesticides, increased travel, global warming, and lack of public awareness. Most likely its a combination of all of these and others.

According to Orkin, the list ranks the cities by the number of bed bug treatments Orkin performed from January to December 2013, along with any shift in ranking compared to January to December 2012.

Rounding out the top 10 are Los Angeles, Columbus (Ohio), Detroit, Cincinnati, Cleveland/Akron/Canton, Dayton, Washington D.C., Denver and Indianapolis.

While studies show that bed bugs do not spread disease, the physical and mental health consequences are well documented and of serious public concern, said Orkin entomologist and technical services director Ron Harrison, Ph.D. Once bed bugs are inside your home or business, they can reproduce quickly and can travel from place to place in personal belongings and even on people. They can also move from place to place on their own, independently of objects.

Residents of Nashville and Charlotte shouldnt be all that happy, as their cities shot up the list 17 and 18 spots respectively.

HPD – Bed Bugs – New York City

On November 16, 2011, HPD along with Council Speaker Quinn and Council Member Brewer announced the acquisition of two male bed bug sniffing dogs in an effort to combat bed bug infestations in residential properties. The beagles, Mickey and Nemo, are available to assist a team of four Code Enforcement Inspectors who have been trained to work with the dogs. The dogs will respond to bed bug complaints where the 311 operator has confirmed that the tenant would like to have the inspection performed by a dog; not every complaint where someone indicates that they are available for a dog will get such an inspection. The dogs were trained at an accredited facility to alert by sitting when they detect live bed bugs or viable eggs. The dogs findings will be confirmed by visual inspection before a violation is issued. Although the dogs cannot respond to all bed bug complaints in residential properties, they will serve as a valuable resource in detecting bed bugs in places that are difficult for people to detect, and in cases where there are a small amount of bed bugs or the bed bugs have not yet matured. For more information on the Bed Bug Canine inspections, click here.

The Department of Health and Mental Hygienes (DOHMH) Bed Bug Website at http://nyc.gov/bedbugs provides detailed information for tenants, property owners/agents and homeowners on how bed bugs thrive, how to recognize and inspect for their presence, steps to take to prevent them from infesting a home, how to safely rid an area of bed bugs if they do occur, and how to select and work with a pest management professional. You can also go to the Department of Housing Preservation and Developments (HPD) e-learning on bedbugs, which provides information on the above topics through an interactive format, using anaudio/ visual format.

Left untreated, bed bugs can spread quickly in multi-dwelling housing. Both the housing and health codes require that property owners address infestations promptly. The surest strategies to keep bed bugs from spreading are prevention, early detection and rapid treatment. As a tenant, the first action you should take if you believe that you have bed bugs is to notify your landlord. As a landlord, the first action you should take is to conduct an inspection of the reported condition. Knowing what to look for is key!

Bed Bug Complaints: Enforcement ProtocolHere is how the Citys enforcement protocols work:

ComplaintsWhen a complaint is made to 311 about bed bugs in a residential building, HPD attempts to notify a property owner/representative at the registered phone number about the complaint (For more information on registration, click here.) A housing inspector from HPD may conduct an inspection. The inspector examines places where bed bugs are commonly found, such as on and around mattresses, beds and head boards, as well as other potentially infested areas as directed by the tenant.

ViolationsIf the HPD inspector finds bed bugs, the property owner is issued an HPD Notice of Violation (NOV)(see Sample A)ordering that the condition be addressed.

When a NOV is issued by HPD, the property owner also receives a DOHMH Order of the Commissioner(see Sample B).The Commissioners order tells property owners in more detail what the requirements for addressing the bed bug problem are, including:

Inspect the apartment(s) cited for bed bugs.

If you find a bed bug infestation in the apartment(s), inspect all units adjacent to, above and below the infested units, as well as all common areas; and retain the services of a pest management professional certified and registered by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to take all measures necessary to remove bed bug infestationwhere found.

Keep a record of all actions taken in compliance with the Order.

Ew! Chicago leads in bed bugs again

Chicago ranks top U.S. city for bed bugs (Reuters file photo / January 16, 2014)

1:30 p.m. CST, January 16, 2014

Chicago has earned the creepy-crawly distinction of being ranked first in bedbug infestations for the second year in a row, according to pest control company Orkin.

Los Angeles came in second on Orkins list of cities where it does the most business, and Columbus, Ohio was third. New York, the nations biggest city, fell dramatically in the rankings. It came in 17th last year, falling from 10th place in 2012.

The list released by Orkin ranks the cities by the number of bedbug treatments Orkin performed from January to December 2013.

Chicagos rash of bedbug infestations led the City Council last summer to pass an ordinance requiring condo associations to have a formal plan in place for detection, inspection and treatment.

Bedbugs can hide in a number of places in a home, including mattress seams, picture frames and electrical outlets. About the size of an apple seed when fully grown and fed, they can be tricky to spot.

Signs of an infestation include rust-colored stains on sheets or other surfaces on or around a bed and a sweet musty odor, according to the CDC. The bugs tend to spread quickly because they inject an anesthetic when they bite, which prevents a person from realizing that they've been bitten.
