Bed Bug Sniffing Dogs

Below is a story about a woman who hired pest control companies like Terminix, Orkin and others to help her find bed bugs and in the end, it was the bed bug sniffing dog that solved the problem! Its a must read for those that think they have bed bugs but are told by exterminators they dont! Thank you Mimi for sharing your story:

My nightmare started exactly 2 weeks ago today. That is when I caught my first bed bug on my body around 2 am. I feel lucky that I caught the little *#%@ because I had suspected there may have been an issue a couple of weeks prior but could not find any of the evidence in my room or on/around my bed, sheets, box springs, night stands, curtains, picture over my bed, light sockets, etc.

Late November I had to go to Cincinnati for business and about 2 weeks later I received my first spider bite. It was the worst bite I have ever experienced! Red, extremely itchy, and swollen. About a week later, low and behold, I got another spider bite. a few days later 3 in a row on my elbow. I even went to my doctor because my boyfriend said it looked like MRSA. After the Dr swabbed the infected area, I told him I thought it could be bed bugs. He said Mimi, you do not have bed bugs.

Well, a week later is when I caught the thing red handed biting me in the middle of the night. That night it woke me up because my neck was itching so badly. I got up to see what was wrong with my neck when I spotted her on my white t-shirt. I freaked when I caught it because blood squished out of its body! Thats when I knew what the hell I had. I put her in a plastic container and looked up images on the internet.

Terminix Bed Bug Extermination Fees The next day I had Terminix come out to inspect my home. After inspection he said he could not find evidence of bed bugs. I then showed him my container and he said Yep, thats a bed bug alright! Even though he could not find evidence until I handed it to him on a silver platter, he said well, you definitely have bed bug eggs and I can treat your house for $1,150. I also had to sign a 1 year contract to have my house sprayed for the following 12 months in addition to the $1150.

Orkin Extermination Fees I next called Orkin. That guy said if the Terminix guy identified the bed bug in my container, then he would be happy to treat my home for $1,000. This is sight unseen as he wouldnt even come to my home since I told him another company had come out.

OPC Pest Control I next called OPC because they treat using thermal radiation (Heating the house). I did not let him know about having a competitor check my home 2 days prior.

This guy did a very thorough inspection and also could not find evidence until I showed him my trophy in the plastic container.

Bed Bug Sniffing Dogs Worked! So next I called this guy in northern Ky who has dogs that smell live bed bugs and their eggs. His dogs identified only 1 bag that contained my down comforter (I madly cleaned, vacuumed and bagged everything the day I found the bed bug).

I also threw out my comforter that the dogs identified, bagged the rest of the bedding, encased bed, box spring, and pillow sprayed Rest Easy, and put glue traps around the legs of my bed.

Bed Bug Services To Kill Bed Bugs In Kansas City And The Midwest

The Bed Bug Problem

After a 50 year slump, bed bugs are back with a vengeance. Today, individuals traveling both home and abroad are likely to pick up these nighttime pests and introduce them to homes and businesses in their clothes and suitcases. Unfortunately, bed bugs may also be introduced into residential dwellings and commercial environments in retail bags, on used furniture and other unsuspecting items. And its not just hotels that are dealing with bed bugs in Kansas City; bed bugs are moving out of beds and into couches, airplanes, cabs and even movie theaters and if not treated quickly, bed bug infestations in Kansas City, Topeka and throughout Kansas and the entire Midwest can become a severe problem as these biting insects are superior breeders.

Mainly active at night when they come out to feed on human or animal blood, during the day bed bugs will congregate in hiding places that can include:

Mattresses, linens and upholstery

Furniture crevices

Wood trim

Electrical switches and outlets

In floors and cracks in floors

Behind wallpaper and wall hangings

Inside computers and other electronic devices

Bed Bug Report for Hilton Palmer House, Chicago, IL

Anonymous on 07/31/2012

On July 5 2012, I wrote the previous report: "I just returned from a 4 night stay at the Palmer House, Jun 29 to Jul 3 2012..." I would like to confirm that after consulting with my physician, the welts mentionned in my previous report were not "Bedbugs" related, so no bedbugs to report for the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago. I will stay there again whenever I return to Chicago, a beautiful and very well located hotel.

I just returned from a 4 night stay at the Palmer House, Jun 29 to Jul 3 2012 and had a wonderful stay. I found the hotel to be beautiful with a great location. On the last day of my stay and since I have returned I'm now getting red welts in the "line of three" pattern common with bedbug bites. Needless to say Im freaking out praying that I did not bring any with me and infected my home and will be consulting my family physician asap. As I was unsuspecting I did not thoroughly inspected my ro

om so I cannot say for sure if my room was infected but since the Palmer House is the only hotel I stayed at recently, it is safe to assume it's where I got bitten and screw up an otherwise great vacation.

Palmer House Hilton on 10/06/2011

The Palmer House prides itself on its 140 year record for providing scrupulous attention to any and all issues that deal with even the slightest breakout of insect infestation anywhere in the hotel. The recent flurry of news activity relating to bed bugs in American lodging institutions is one that is not taken lightly. However, those that directly relate to our hotel, are taken with extreme seriousness and grave concern. It should be made clear that our record for being proactive, preventat

ive and consistently diligent in the training of our room attendants to be aware of even the slightest possibility of such an occurrence is investigated immediately and thoroughly. When there is even the slightest shadow of a doubt we put a guest room out of order until we have conclusively proven that our suspicions are unfounded. With that said, we must make it absolutely clear the recent blogs of guests claiming to be bitten or otherwise affected by bed bugs or other insects in our hotel, are very concerning and without documentation. For questions or concerns please contact: Ms. Karen Mitchell (312-621-7320) or Mr. Ken Price (312-621-7326).

I stayed here on 8/24/11 and 8/25/11. Room was great. Excellent hotel all around. HOWEVER, second night I woke up with about one hundred (hard to count) little bites (red, itchy bumps) all over my back, armpits and arms.

ID Help? Bed bug or swallow bug? « Got Bed Bugs? Bedbugger Forums

Jim - The pic posted yesterday is the same bug posted at the top of this thread. I just scanned it for better clarity.

Lou - indeed, I mean to say swallow bugs.

I have to admit, it doesn't seem that hairy, but it's hard to tell given the tape it is under. I looked at the guy under a microscope and he certainly has hair - all over the back and around his face.

Some of the reasons I thought it was a swallow bug were that we found them active in the day, we reliably find them near the windows where there is lots of sun. None of us have any bites or have seen any blood marks or feces on our sheets and the bugs don't seem to cluster in our beds. We also have dozens of swallows nests directly outside our windows.

This was a neat guide to the differences between the bat bug, bed bug and swallow bug: http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/insect/05574.html

Well, then I am at a loss. What should I do next?

If they are swallow bugs I can't legally remove the nests and we are stuck with them. Any treatment would on work on the indoors and still leave the house susceptible to more swallow bugs! Apparently swallow bugs go dormant in the winter when the swallows leave - would this solve the problem if we made sure to prevent swallows next year?

If they are bed bugs then that's a whole other story... one I shudder to think of.

Any advice on next steps?
