Bed bug bites cause swellings that become red and irritated when scratched. Some people, however, exhibit no visible symptoms after being bitten.

Bed bugs are blood-sucking insects in the family Cimicidae. Both nymphs and adults feed on sleeping or sedentary humans, mostly at night, a time when this pests stealthy habits are difficult to observe.

Bed bugs are found worldwide in association with human habitations. The common bed bug, Cimex lectularius, is a widely distributed species most frequently found in the northern temperate climates of North America, Europe, and Central Asia. It occurs more sporadically in southern temperate regions. In tropical regions C. hemipterus, the tropical bed bug, is the dominant species. The most common species found in California is C. lectularius.

The growth and development of C. lectularius is optimal when it feeds on humans; however, this insect also feeds on other species of mammals and on birds found near the home including chickens, mice, rats, and rabbits. Bat bugs and swallow bugs, close relatives of bed bugs, may also be found in and around human dwellings and may sometimes bite humans, although their preferred hosts are bats and birds, respectively.

Until recently, bed bug infestations were thought to be associated primarily with crowded and dilapidated housing. However, bed bugs have undergone a resurgence in pest status and can now be found even in the finest hotel and living accommodations. The reasons for this resurgence arent totally understood but appear to involve increased global travel and commerce, ease of movement of infested items, widespread insecticide resistance, and changes in pesticides available to control this pest.

Bed Bugs

What are Bed Bugs? Bed bugs are small brownish insects. They're about 4 mm long (1/8 in.) and visible to the naked eye. They're active at night and can usually be seen along the seams of mattresses. They feed on human blood.

Bed bug infestations may cause irritating, itchy bite reactions, and anxiety. Over the past few years, bed bugs have been spreading in large cities worldwide.

Theres a lot of competition in the Toronto bed bug control market. Bed Bugs and Beyond doesnt take advantage of the hot market. So far, weve been bed-bug free since the initial heat treatment!Our experience with Bed Bugs & Beyond was great. The owner, Cary, came and did a free inspection on the same day we contacted him even though he had another job in progress elsewhere. The crew who did the treatment was just as compassionate as Cary. They patiently explained the process and helped us and our two cats get out the door bed-bug free so we wouldnt bring them back with us. This involved blowing hot air on us, our bags, and cat carriers as well as inside my car.Cary did warn us during the inspection that our Ikea furniture would sustain some damage. Indeed, the cheap melamine finishes separated from our dressers. We have been able to super-glue them back down. Our large and expensive Pax wardrobe came through it just fine, though! The only damage to our electronics was to our laser printer, which weve replaced a cost well worth the experience of a good nights sleep If youve got bed bugs, dont waste your money on steam and vacuum treatments (these things you can do yourself!) and be aware of the fact that chemical fumigation cannot penetrate the nooks and crannies in your walls where these sneaky bugs hang out. Heat is the best way.I do recommend cleaning up any of the Diatomaceous Earth powder before heat treatment if youve spread it around. The heat fans will blow it around everywhere. Weeks later and Im still cleaning it up! I also recommend boarding your pets somewhere overnight. Our indoor cats really suffered in the hot house even hours after the treatment. Your house will take 5+ hours to cool off because the walls and floors retain so much heat.A big thanks to Cary and the Bed Bugs and Beyond crew! Although youre all wonderful people, I hope that I never have to contact you again THANK YOU!!!!!!!

I was going to post a explanation to my supposed "attack" on you, but as I see by the deletions of my correspondence, on this topic, you appear to have clout with this travel information group.

Well, just allow me to say that it was not a shot at you directly. It was a shot at inaccuracies that are posted to these type of sites by posters, in general. I guess that I am unable to advise you of recent Bed Bug problems that we incurred on your Island (as recent as this month). Unless you are a fast reader (lol). I am not saying your Island is the only province with Bed Bugs, heaven forbid! ALL PROVINCES have bed bugs.

We just were unfortunate to have been the unlucky ones to be staying at a 3 star cottage for the month of September, where we met up with these little critters. As Jasper had stated, some people are unaware that they have been bitten. As most cottages are usually rented for only a week at a time, the vacationers leave and go on their way. After day 11 on the Island, we noticed what we had thought were mosquito bites. by day 13, we were convinced and had it confirmed that in fact, they were bed bugs. By day 14 we were headed home.
