Don't Let the Bed Bugs Bite
Green Bay -
They're creepy, crawly, tiny little blood suckers.
They can live months without eating, multiply quickly, and love to hide from humans.
No one wants bed bugs in their home.
"They're not completely overtaking the city at this point. We shouldn't get that idea. However, we are at high risk and we're going to see the numbers increase over the next few years," says Scott Nelson, Green Bay City Housing and Zoning Inspector.
Nelson says he's seeing bed bug infestations popping up all over, especially in apartment complexes.
"One of our inspectors is handling a case which involves a 172-unit complex, of which I believe 36 have been inspected. Twenty-six were found to be infested and treated," Nelson says.
Inspectors took pictures of a bed bug-infested sofa inspectors in one of those apartments.
"We're getting bed bug calls every day, throughout our regional offices, throughout the state of Wisconsin," says Randy Allen, Wil-Kil Pest Control Regional Manager and Associate Certified Entomologist.
Bed bug infestations are keeping pest control businesses busy, because the bugs are nearly impossible to eliminate on your own.

Theres Lance Armstrong, an icon in a sport laced with doping. Dope has been as integral a part of pro cycling as a football is to football. Armstrong wins the Tour de France seven times in a row. It is impossible to believe he wasnt doping. But, despite what seems to be perpetual investigations in France and the U.S., despite allegations of past teammates, past gofers, and past friends, no one has ever made a single doping charge stick to the seven-time champ. Indeed, just two months ago the U.S. attorney in L.A. closed a two-year investigation into Armstrong, this one dealing with doping during his tenure on the U.S. Postal Service team (19982004).
If youre Floyd Landis, this has got to be bitter, bitter news. The bastard cheat got away with it again. Armstrong, who has an estimated net worth of $125 million, gets to keep his money, trophies, endorsement deals, business interests, and fancy friends. Meantime, Floyd eats bed bugs to survive.
And to make things incredibly, impossibly worse, on the heels of Armstrongs latest victory comes news that Floyd is the target of a federal investigation. Indeed, ESPN reports that a San Diego grand jury has been hearing witnesses at the U.S. District Court on Front Street for the past year.
The feds are looking into mail- and wire-fraud charges against Landis in regards to his legal defense fund. Said fund was set up after he was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title. Authorities said he tested positive for synthetic testosterone.
The guy cant catch a break. Back in 2010, Landis wore a wire and carried a small video camera for former IRS, current FDA, super steroid investigator Jeff Novitzky, into the home of Michael Ball. Ball owned a bad-boy cycling team, Rock Racing, and wanted to put Landis on his roster. In return, Landis wears a wire into his apartment.
While wearing a wire for Novitzky, Landis was also working with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and who knows how many others in Federal Police World, ratting out past teammates and employers. And now Federal Police World turns on him, the last honest man left in professional cycling, a simple soldier trying to clean up his sport.
To recap, Landis won the 2006 Tour de France and was busted for doping. Now comes the Floyd Fairness Fund. ESPN.com reports he raised more than $1 million and that $300,000 to $400,000 came from small individual donations and merchandise sales.
Go over to YouTube and run a search on Floyd Fairness Fund. The first hit is a March 30, 2007, video of Floyd pitching his fund. The video runs 7:22 but is blacked out after the first 3:30. Now run a Google video search on Floyd Fairness Fund. That YouTube video turns up all over the web but always with the last 3:30 deleted. In fact, I couldnt find the missing 3:30 anywhere on the internet. Lucky for us, I wrote about that specific video before it was blacked out:
The part of the video that interests me are shots of him at what looks to be a restaurant. Hes standing in a makeshift holding area talking to two women. You hear him being introduced, All of you, welcome the 2006 Tour de France champion, Floyd Landis! He straightens his shoulders and walks toward bright lights and sustained applause. Landis has his, Im innocent spiel memorized, he has his foundation executive director there, he has his foundation chairman there, hes posing for pictures, hes signing autographs, hes working the room. Thats when it hits you. This is personal, hes lying to people one person at a time.
Youve got to wonder how many bike shops, shopping malls, county fairs, restaurants, neighborhood pubs, book signings, festivals, and fairs it took to raise $300,000 in small donations from people who believed in him. How many, 200? More than 200? He lied at every one of those appearances. How many media interviews did he give, 100...200? He lied during every interview.

Clark Arms residents dealing with bed bugs
JEFFERSONVILLE Some residents at Clark Arms are having to move belongings out of their apartments as a bed bug infestation has taken root.
Jenny Eldridge, whos mother-in-law lives at Clark Arms a public housing complex for elderly and disabled residents said she and family members spent several days last week clearing out closets full of coats, clothes, pictures, Christmas decorations and other items.
Bags of clothes had to be sealed, taken to a laundry facility, and washed in hot water to kill the bugs.
This has been a nightmare, Eldridge said, noting that shes worried about other residents who dont have family to help them move things out. Some of them are sick and disabled and dont have people that can help them.
Her mother-in-laws place was sprayed Monday and shes back in the apartment now. However, Eldridge is still upset because a couch from the apartment might have to be tossed out in order to get rid of the bugs completely.
Louisville-based OPC is treating the infestation and their staff told her the couch might have to go. OPC President Donnie Blake said he understands how hard the request is but said it might be necessary in order to treat the apartment.
Bed bugs are tough, Blake said. Trying to do these treatments are extremely invasive. Its no fun whatsoever.
In some cases, Blake said, the value of the furniture may not match up with the cost of treatment. Eldridge wants the authority to hire someone who will treat the used furniture.
Further, she doesnt like that OPC is going apartment to apartment to treat the bugs rather than treating the entire floor. Blake said treating only the infested units and adjacent units is the companys standard practice.
There are 101 units in Clark Arms and seven of them are under treatment for bed bugs, said Housing Authority Executive Director Phillip Bates. The housing authority is paying for the treatments and Bates said OPCs methods have been successful at eradicating the bed bugs when theyve worked at other authority properties.

Champaign Man Upset Over Apartment Bed Bugs
A Champaign man got a disgusting surprise as he drifted off to sleep Tuesday night. He found a bed bug crawling on his wall. Robert Ross was watching a movie, when his fiance noticed the bug.
"We were laying down for bed and that's where he was when I squashed him," Robert Ross said.
He wasted no time to get away from the problem. He packed up his fiance and kids and went to a hotel.
Wednesday, he wanted to make sure the bugs were gone. He washed all of the family's clothes and hired a cleaning service. It has cost him thousands of dollars.
"We've got to use all of our savings to get things cleaned," Ross said.
The property manager of Wellington Place Apartments tells us he offered to pay for a preventative treatment. He says Ross moved into the apartment three weeks ago and may have brought the bug in with him. The place has new carpet and was recently inspected for bugs and none were found.
