MADISON (WKOW) --According to public health officials there's been an increase in bed bug infestations in Wisconsin.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), bed bugs are small, flat, insects that feed solely on human and animal blood while they sleep. The CDC says they can live several months without a blood meal.

Bed bugs travel from place to place in the seams and folds of luggage, overnight bags, folded clothes, bedding, furniture, and anywhere else they can hide.

The reddish-brown bugs generally bite at night and leave flat, red welts primarily on the face, neck, arms and hands., but the bites usually do not pose a serious medical threat. The CDC says the bites may be evident immediately or may take several days to become welts.

Phil Pelliterri, an entomologist with UW-Madison, says there's been an increase in bed bugs because the most effective treatments are costly.
