Battle to take bite out of bed bug problem
BED bugs are a major problem in parts of Glasgow, environmental health bosses have warned.
Environmental health teams have been drafted in to Govanhill where Glasgow City Council offers a free service to eradicate the pests.
One student, who lived there, said his room was over-run with the parasites.
He eventually moved house and had to stay with friends for weeks before finding a new place to live.
The 24-year-old, who asked not to be named, had been bitten many times.
He said: "I had to leave my sofa behind because it was infested, but I couldn't stay there any more.
"When I saw the bugs it was a horrible confirm-ation. Thinking about it still makes my skin crawl."
Councillor Soryia Sidd-ique, whose ward covers affected areas, said: "Hav-ing been contacted by residents regarding infest-ation, concerns were raised and NHS Environmental Health have now committed to an additional team of officers in the area.
"I have requested a structured long-term partnership approach to the challenge including preven-tion, training, liasion with GPs and education, aiming to implement a comprehen-sive block by block treatment for infestations."
The blood sucking parasites were almost extinct, but since the turn of the century infestations have risen at an alarming rate of 25% a year.

The National Pest Management Association Reminds Thanksgiving Travelers to Pack Bed Bug Prevention Tips
FAIRFAX, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--According to AAA, more than 46 million Americans plan to travel 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving the most for this holiday in seven years. With so many travelers heading to homes and hotels, via various modes of transportation, the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) reminds the public that bed bugs remain a problem and that prevention is crucial to stem the spread of this pest.
Thanksgiving is a time for family, gratitude and of course, good food. However, those happy memories can quickly be erased should a traveler find theyve unknowingly brought bed bugs home, noted Missy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPMA. We advise everyone to keep our easy-to-remember prevention tips in mind when traveling to keep their holiday and beyond free of bed bugs.
According to a 2013 NPMA/University of Kentucky survey, 75 percent of pest professionals treated for bed bugs in hotels; 21 percent on public transportation (train, bus, taxi) and two percent on planes.
The NPMA offers the following prevention tips for holiday travelers:
The NPMA, a non-profit organization with more than 7,000 members, was established in 1933 to support the pest management industry's commitment to the protection of public health, food and property. For more information, visit PestWorld.org.

Bedbugs are flat, wingless insects about 0.25 in. (0.6 cm) long. They range in color from almost white to brown. They turn rusty red after feeding. Like mosquitoes, bedbugs feed on blood from animals or people.
Bedbugs have that name because they like to hide in bedding and mattresses. Bedbugs usually hide during the day and are active at night when they feed. They can go for weeks without feeding.
Bedbugs do not seem to spread disease to people. But itching from the bites can be so bad that some people will scratch enough to cause breaks in the skin that get infected easily. The bites can also cause an allergic reaction in some people.
Bedbugs are found worldwide. They are most often found in hotels, motels, hostels, shelters, and apartment complexes where large numbers of people come and go.
Because bedbugs hide in small crevices, they can come into your house on luggage, furniture, clothing, pillows, boxes, and other objects. The bugs can hide in beds, floors, furniture, wood, and paper trash during the day.
The first sign of bedbugs may be red, itchy bites on the skin, usually on the arms or shoulders. Bedbugs tend to leave straight rows of bites, unlike some other insects that leave bites here and there.

Shelter seeks funds to help combat lingering bed bug infestation
A local homeless outreach center is mounting a capital campaign aimed at securing grant funds to help mitigate lingering problems caused by Cimex lectularius, commonly known as the bed bug.
Lighthouse Outreach Center Director Errol Hada told the Examiner-Enterprise on Friday the center had recently been fumigated and that the issue is being addressed weekly at the shelter. The newspaper had received several complaints about the issue in recent weeks.
We had a problem about a month ago, Hada said. There are some still but we have it under control.
The Lighthouse Outreach Center focuses on helping homeless citizens become employed and procure housing of their own.
We are looking to get a grant of donations that will help us replace all the wooden beds in the mens dorm with steel beds and enable us to get a commercial washer and drier.
According to Hada, wooden bed frames are a haven for bed bugs in that the bugs get in the crevices of the wood making them difficult to exterminate. He says the washer and drier that the center currently has does not get hot enough to kill all the insects.
According to Wikipedia, bedbugs are parasitic insects of the cimicid family that feed exclusively on blood. Secondary issues from bed bug infestations include skin rashes, psychological effects and allergic symptoms and have reportedly increased in prevalence since 1995, likely due to pesticide resistance.
According to Hada, the Lighthouse is currently at capacity with about 40 men staying in the shelter.
We have even have four cots down right now, he said. There are about 20 more married couples and single women and 10 children.
More accommodations for the those in need are currently in the works through a local non-profit organization recently formed to help area homeless Family Promise of Washington County.

Spartanburg Housing Authority Says Bed Bugs "Regretful …
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -
An official on Friday called a costly bed bug clean up at a Spartanburg public housing complex "regretful," and vowed to make changes so that it doesn't happen, again.
The several weeks long bed bug clean up at Archibald Rutledge Apartments, which cost taxpayers $85,000, is expected to wrap up Friday night.
"The circumstances are certainly regretful," said Daryl Dalton, the executive director of the Spartanburg Housing Authority. "It's terrible that so many people lost so many items."
Dalton said over the past five years, the housing authority has spent about $100,000 on exterminators in its effort to rid the decades-old complex of a bed bug infestation.
He said the infestation was so widespread that it affected an adjacent senior center, where officials had to throw out much of the furniture.
"This is totally unacceptable," said Sandra Owensby, who manages the Senior Centers of Spartanburg County. "You know, denial is not a river in Egypt, and they were in denial about the bed bug problem for so long."
Dalton said there is a chance that if the housing authority acted sooner to combat the infestation, it may not have gotten to this point. "I certainly wish that we had been able to address the problem earlier on than what we did, and maybe if it had been done earlier on, we wouldn't have had to treat the entire building."
Dalton said the housing authority will now require tenants to report bed bug issues immediately. Under its new policy. it will not charge tenants for reporting bed bugs, which it said may have deterred tenants from reporting problems in the past.
