Bed Bug Precautions
Along with fires, the Lima Fire Department is battling another growing threat in the state, bed bugs.
According to the Ohio Department of Health, the blood sucking insects were once thought to be eradicated from the United States, but they are making a comeback and have affected every city in Ohio. While bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, they do bite and may cause allergic reactions. Fire fighters are finding the bugs more and more often on EMS calls. Some Cincinnati Fire Stations have been hit hard, so Lima's department is being proactive.
An infestation of bed bugs can be expensive and hard to control. Getting rid of them requires professional help, so firefighters are doing things such as wearing booties over their shoes during runs and getting new chairs for the lobby that are easier to clean.
According to a study from the pest control company Orkin, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton all rank in the top U.S. cities from bed bug treatments last year.

Bed Bugs – New York State Department of Health
Bed bugs have been around for thousands of years. They feed on blood, but are not known to spread any diseases to humans. Some people can be allergic to their bites. Getting rid of a bed bug infestation is not easy, but there are steps you can take to control the problem. There are also steps you can take to avoid bringing bed bugs home.
It can be done, but it usually requires what is called an "integrated pest management" (IPM) approach. This combines techniques that pose the lowest risk to your health and the environment. Try these strategies:
Pesticides may not be effective and can be dangerous if used improperly. If you decide to use pesticides, follow these rules:
It takes time and persistence to get rid of bed bugs, and in some cases, the cooperation of landlords, neighbors and others. It can be physically and emotionally exhausting. It can also be expensive when pest control companies are called in. Just remember - bed bugs are more of a nuisance than a health concern and, with vigilance, you can avoid or deal with infestations.

Bed Bug Control NJ – Expert Exterminators, Bed bugs in New Jersey
Bed bugs thrive in temperate climates, and can be found in New Jersey. They tend to hide in beds and other furniture. There are many different species of bed bug and they are each considered parasites. The source of food for all bed bugs is blood, but there is one species, Cimex lectularius, that consumes human blood. They look like beetles, with flattened bodies and a reddish-brown exoskeleton. Adults are around inch long, and they have no wings.
They are not capable of jumping like lice, but they can crawl and drop down from ceiling vents. Bed bugs in New Jersey can be transmitted from home to home through catching a ride on pets, through the clothes and backpacks of human visitors. They can be found in items such as furniture that have bed bugs nesting already. They can also travel through air ducts and other pipes. They like to settle in dark spaces and hide their eggs there as well.
There are ways to control your bed bug infestation in New Jersey. They usually remain near their chosen host and you can look for evidence of their presence in bedding, furniture and linens. You can tell a bed bug apart from other common types of roaches and beetles, because when you kill it, it releases an unpleasant, sweet smell like rotting raspberries. If they have been feeding, you will also find blood.
Sometimes an infestation can be discovered due to small patches of blood on sheets and furniture. If you keep your house neat and organized, it will be easier to detect bed bugs if you have them. Washing linens on the hottest setting can help kill bed bugs and their eggs. Also, double-check all used furniture that you buy is another method to control and prevent bed bug infestation in New Jersey.
When the bed bug exterminators come to treat your infested house, here is what to expect. They will be spraying problem areas with a pesticide. The pesticide is clear and kills bed bugs on contact. Because of this, it is very important that infested areas are thoroughly cleaned before treatment. You will need to leave while the bed bug exterminators do their job for at least two hours.
It will take anywhere from one to six hours for sprayed areas to dry depending on environmental conditions. Do not sleep without a sheet on your treated mattress. The extermination process will take around a month. It is crucial to continue sanitizing your exposed linens regularly over this time period.
You can prepare for the process by cleaning and sanitizing everything in the exposed area and cutting down on the amount of loose items lying around. The most important hot zones are beds and couches. It is helpful to Steam-Clean or Wet-Vac your carpets. You can clean and sanitize linoleum or tile floors. In addressing your bed, you can vacuum your mattress and box spring with a long hose.
Make sure you immediately take vacuum bags out of your house after sweeping infested areas instead of waiting until they are full. Floors and carpets around all infested furniture should be vacuumed and cleaned. All exposed linens and clothing should be washed and dried on the hot setting or dry-cleaned. This should occur both before and after treatment.

Bed Bugs Showed Up at Justice Center, My Cleaning Products Recommends a Pesticide-Exempt Bed Bug Spray to Block Their …
Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) January 16, 2014
Bed bugs found a way to Cleveland's Justice Center. And stating that they could spread further from there, My Cleaning Products then recommended a pesticide-exempt bed bug spray to help the public protect themselves from them.
According to a report from fox8.com published on January 13, 2014, the crawlies were discovered on Monday, My Cleaning Products relayed. Darren Toms, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, has already confirmed it, it detailed.
However, it was said in the report that the specific area where the pesky insects were found was undisclosed, MCP shared. But to solve the issue, it related that bed bug experts were on the facility last Monday afternoon to provide treatment and also offer answers to the employees' questions about the critters.
Below is an excerpt from the post about Justice Center Found With Bed Bugs by My Cleaning Products.
Lawsuits involving bed bugs are not uncommon anymore though most of them are between tenants and landlords and hotels and guests. On Monday though, those vampire-like critters reached the court not just by papers. They visited one personally. And needless to say, it alerted the employees.
Particularly, those crawlies showed up at the Justice Center in Cleveland. But though their presence was already confirmed by Darren Toms of the Community Outreach Coordinator for the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court, the specific section that they infested remained undisclosed.
My Cleaning Products said that bed bugs could infest any place just as long it has someone who could be the source of their meal. Hence, it commented that their appearance at Justice Center wasn't that surprising.
Nevertheless, MCP stressed that their presence anywhere must not be taken lightly. Any amount of time taken to ignore them, it said, gives them a chance to multiply, further spread and cause even more problems. And so, as soon any bed bug sign is encountered, it asserted that an inspection and follow-up treatment must then be implemented.
However, to kill bed bugs promptly, it stated that one would need the help of bed bug spray. Nonetheless, of all the solutions for those critters nowadays, the company only recommends the pesticide-exempt Bed Bug Bully.
