New Mexico (i /nju mksko/) is a state located in the southwestern region of the United States. With a population density of 16 per square mile, New Mexico is the sixth- most sparsely inhabited U.S. state. As of 2008, the state had the nation's highest poverty rate.

Inhabited by Native American populations for many centuries, it has also been part of the Imperial Spanish viceroyalty of New Spain, part of Mexico, and a U.S. territory. Among U.S. states, New Mexico has the highest percentage of Hispanics at 44 percent (2008 estimate), being descendants of Spanish colonists and recent immigrants from Latin America. It also has the third-highest percentage of Native Americans after Alaska and Oklahoma, and the fifth-highest total number of Native Americans after California, Oklahoma, Arizona, and Texas. The tribes in the state consist of mostly Navajo and Pueblo peoples. As a result, the demographics and culture of the state are unique for their strong Hispanic, Mexican, and Native American cultural influences.

The state's total area is 121,412square miles (314,460km2). The eastern border of New Mexico lies along 103 W longitude with the state of Oklahoma, and three miles (5km) west of 103.5 W longitude with Texas. On the southern border, Texas makes up the eastern two-thirds, while the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Sonora make up the western third, with Chihuahua making up about 90% of that. The western border with Arizona runs along the 109 03' W longitude. The 37 N latitude parallel forms the northern boundary with Colorado. The states New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Utah come together at the Four Corners in the northwestern corner of New Mexico. New Mexico, although a large state, has little water. Its surface water area is about 250square miles (650km2).

The New Mexican landscape ranges from wide, rose-colored deserts to broken mesas to high, snow-capped peaks. Despite New Mexico's arid image, heavily forested mountain wildernesses cover a significant portion of the state, especially towards the north. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the southernmost part of the Rocky Mountains, run roughly north-south along the east side of the Rio Grande in the rugged, pastoral north. The most important of New Mexico's rivers are the Rio Grande, Pecos, Canadian, San Juan, and Gila. The Rio Grande is the eighth longest river in the U.S.

The U.S. government protects millions of acres of New Mexico as national forests including:

Areas managed by the National Park Service include:

Visitors also frequent the surviving native pueblos of New Mexico. Tourists visiting these sites bring significant monies to the state. Other areas of geographical and scenic interest include Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument and the Valles Caldera National Preserve. The Gila Wilderness lies in the southwest of the state.

The climate of New Mexico is highly arid and its territory is mostly covered by mountains, high plains, and desert. New Mexico's average precipitation rate is 9inches (230mm) a year. The average annual temperatures can range from 64F in the southeast to less than 40F in the northern mountains. During the summer months, daytime temperatures can often exceed 100F at elevations below 5,000 feet, but the average high temperature in July can range from slightly above 90F at the lower elevations to the upper 70s at the higher elevations. The highest temperature recorded in New Mexico was 116F at Artesia on June 29, 1918.

New Mexico offers habitat for occurrence of many plant and animal species, with emphasis upon many desert areas and large amounts of pinon-juniper woodland. Creosote bush, mesquite, cacti, yucca, and desert grasses, including black grama, purple three-awn, tobosa, and burrograss, cover the broad, semiarid plains that cover the southern portion of the state. Native birds include the Road-runner, Geococcyx californianus and Wild turkey, Meleagris gallopavo subspecies mexicana.

Focus of Manchester meeting will be rooting out those bed bugs …

MANCHESTER A new state law that requires landlords to quickly address complaints about bed bugs will be the main topic of an all-day conference Monday in downtown Manchester.

The New Hampshire Bed Bug Action Committee expects 200 people, including landlords, tenant groups, health care providers and government officials to attend the conference at the Radisson Hotel. It is being funded by the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture, Markets and Food, which oversees commercial pesticide use in the state.

Rick Castillo, one of the organizers and a housing counselor at The Way Home, said the New Hampshire Bites Back II conference should mark a turning point in New Hampshire, as efforts move from reaction to prevention of the pests.

I believe we can greatly reduce the negative impacts of bed bug infestations such as lost school days, lowered work productivity, the high cost of treatment and discarded furniture not to mention the pure agony people experience from being bitten while they sleep at night, Castillo said.

On Jan. 1, a new law goes into effect that sets up responsibilities for both landlords and tenants once bed bugs are discovered in an apartment.

For example, a landlord must investigate and remediate an infection within seven days of receiving a complaint from a tenant. The landlord is financially responsible for the remediation and must give tenants written instructions about how to prepare for treatment 72 hours in advance.

Tenants have responsibilities too. They must allow a landlord emergency entry into their apartment after a bed bug complaint has been received. They must prepare their apartment for treatment. And they can be charged for the cost of the treatment if they are deemed responsible for the bed bug infestation.

A tenant is presumed responsible for an infestation if bed bugs are found only in the one unit and no other bed bugs have been reported in that unit or adjacent units for six months.

The law allows a judge to issue penalties to landlords and tenants when provisions are violated. It also allows for eviction if tenants disobey notices from the landlord.

Currently, towns and cities have different ordinances and procedures for addressing bed bugs, Castillo said.

The state of Montana i /mntn/ is located in the Western United States. The western third of the state contains numerous mountain ranges; other island ranges are found in the central third of the state, for a total of 77 named ranges of the Rocky Mountains. This geographical fact is reflected in the state's name, derived from the Spanish word montaa (mountain).

Montana has several nicknames, none official, including: "The Treasure State" and "Big Sky Country," and slogans that include "Land of the Shining Mountains," and more recently, "The Last Best Place." The state ranks fourth in area, but 44th in population, and therefore has the third lowest population density in the United States. The economy is primarily based on ranching, wheat farming, oil and coal in the east; lumber, tourism, and hard rock mining in the west. Millions of tourists annually visit Glacier National Park, the Battle of Little Bighorn site, and three of the five entrances to Yellowstone National Park. Montana is bordered by the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan on the north, Idaho on the west, Wyoming on the south and North Dakota and South Dakota on the east.

With a land area of 145,552square miles (376,980km2) the state of Montana is the fourth largest in the United States (after Alaska, Texas, and California). To the north, Montana and Canada share a 545miles (877km) border. The state borders the three Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, more than any other state. To the east, the state borders North Dakota and South Dakota. To the south lies Wyoming and to the west and southwest is Idaho.

The topography of the state is diverse, and roughly defined by the Continental Divide, which runs on an approximate diagonal line through the state from northwest to south-central, splitting it into two distinct eastern and western regions. Montana is well known for its mountainous western region, most of which are geologically and geographically part of the Northern Rocky Mountains. The Absaroka and Beartooth ranges in the south are technically part of the Central Rocky Mountains. About 60% of the state is prairie, part of the northern Great Plains. Nonetheless, even east of the Continental Divide and the Rocky Mountain Front, there are a number of isolated "island ranges" that dot the prairie landscape. This island range region covers most of the central third of the state.

The Bitterroot Mountainsone of the longest continuous ranges in the entire Rocky Mountain chain from Alaska to Mexicodivide the state from Idaho to the west, with the southern third of the range blending into the Continental Divide. Mountain ranges between the Bitterroots and the top of the Continental Divide include the Cabinet Mountains, the Missions, the Garnet, Sapphire, Flint Creek, and Pintlar ranges.

The northern section of the Divide, where the mountains give way rapidly to prairie, is known collectively as the Rocky Mountain Front. The front is most pronounced in the Lewis Range, located primarily in Glacier National Park. Due to the configuration of mountain ranges in Glacier National Park, the Northern Divide (which begins in Alaska's Seward Peninsula) crosses this region and turns east in Montana at Triple Divide Peak. It causes the Waterton River, Belly, and Saint Mary rivers to flow north into Alberta, Canada. There they join the Saskatchewan River, which ultimately empties into Hudson Bay.

East of the divide, several parallel ranges march across the southern half of the state, including the Gravelly Range; the Tobacco Roots; the Madison Range; Gallatin Range; Big Belt Mountains; Bridger Mountains; Absaroka Mountains; and the Beartooth Mountains. The Beartooth Plateau is the largest continuous land mass over 10,000feet (3,000m) high in the continental United States. It contains the highest point in the state, Granite Peak, 12,799feet (3,901m) high.

Between the mountain ranges are many scenic valleys, rich in agricultural resources and rivers, and possessing multiple opportunities for tourism and recreation. Among the best-known areas are the Flathead Valley, Bitterroot Valley, Big Hole Valley, and Gallatin Valley.

East and north of this transition zone are expansive, sparsely populated Northern Plains, with rolling tableland prairies, "island" mountain ranges, and scenic badlands extending into the Dakotas and Wyoming, as well as Alberta and Saskatchewan, Canada. The isolated island ranges east of the Divide include the Castle Mountains, Crazy Mountains, Little Belt Mountains, Snowy Mountains, Sweet Grass Hills, Bull Mountains, the Pryor Mountains south of Billings, andin the southeastern corner of the state near Ekalakathe Long Pines and Short Pines.
