Bothersome bedbugs reach Yukon | Yukon News
Think the Yukon is safe from the scourge of bedbugs because of our cold climate?
Think again.
The bloodsuckers have tormented Sherrill Armstrong, a social housing tenant who lives on the second floor of 408 Alexander Street in Whitehorse, since July.
As if that werent bad enough, Armstrong also had to worry about a threatening letter sent to her by the Yukon Housing Corporation, which owns the building. It warns her that she owes $711 for fumigation costs and the disposal of her bug-ridden bed.
Thats a lot of money for someone on a fixed income, such as Armstrong.
Failure to make arrangements to pay this amount by January 18, 2011 may result in a termination of your tenancy, warns the January 4 letter.
Armstrong never replied. Im not paying for something I cant control, she said.
Thankfully, the housing corporation has since stood down on its threat, following a phone call from the Yukon News.
The corporation typically charges tenants for the cost of damage to units, said housing corporation spokesperson Nathalie Ouellet.
But, given the ambiguous nature of a bedbug infestation, theyve decided to suspend the fee until the corporation sorts out how to deal with bedbug problems, she said.

The following response is respectfully submitted. First and foremost it should be noted that this isolated incident has been taken very seriously by the staff and management of The Wort Hotel. Our guests, past and future, should not be alarmed as there is no bed bug problem at The Wort Hotel.
Although an isolated occurrence, anytime a guest is not satisfied or not comfortable for any reason it becomes a top concern for all of us at the Wort Hotel, as guest satisfaction and comfort remain our number one priority.
Regarding the incident in question the room was immediately taken off-line; a staff evaluation was conducted, followed by a thorough professional examination. Wyoming i /waom/ is a state in the Western United States. The majority of the state is dominated by the mountain ranges and rangelands of the Rocky Mountain West, while the easternmost section of the state includes part of a high elevation prairie region known as the High Plains. While the tenth largest U.S. state by area, Wyoming is the least populous, with a U.S. Census estimated population of 544,270 in 2009, a 5.9% increase since 2000. The capital and the most populous city of Wyoming is Cheyenne.
As specified in the designating legislation for the Territory of Wyoming, Wyoming's borders are lines of latitude, 41N and 45N, and longitude, 1043'W and 1113'W (27 W and 34 W of the Washington Meridian), making the shape of the state a latitude-longitude quadrangle. Wyoming is one of only three states (along with Colorado and Utah) to have only latitudinal and longitudinal, rather than naturally defined, boundaries. Due to surveying errors during the 19th century, Wyoming's legal border deviates from the latitude and longitude lines by up to half of a mile (.8km) in some spots, especially in the mountainous region along the 45th parallel. Wyoming is bordered on the north by Montana, on the east by South Dakota and Nebraska, on the south by Colorado, on the southwest by Utah, and on the west by Idaho. It is the tenth largest state in the United States in total area, containing 97,818square miles (253,350km2) and is made up of 23 counties. From the north border to the south border it is 276miles (444km); and from the east to the west border is 365miles (587km) at its south end and 342miles (550km) at the north end.
The Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming. The state is a great plateau broken by a number of mountain ranges. Surface elevations range from the summit of Gannett Peak in the Wind River Mountain Range, at 13,804feet (4,207m), to the Belle Fourche River valley in the states northeast corner, at 3,125feet (953m). In the northwest are the Absaroka, Owl Creek, Gros Ventre, Wind River and the Teton ranges. In the north central are the Big Horn Mountains; in the northeast, the Black Hills; and in the southern region the Laramie, Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges.
The Snowy Range in the south central part of the state is an extension of the Colorado Rockies in both geology and appearance. The Wind River Range in the west central part of the state is remote and includes more than 40 mountain peaks in excess of 13,000ft (4,000m) tall in addition to Gannett Peak, the highest peak in the state. The Big Horn Mountains in the north central portion are somewhat isolated from the bulk of the Rocky Mountains.
The Teton Range in the northwest extends for 50miles (80km), part of which is included in Grand Teton National Park. The park includes the Grand Teton, the second highest peak in Wyoming.
The Continental Divide spans north-south across the central portion of the state. Rivers east of the divide drain into the Missouri River Basin and eventually the Gulf of Mexico. They are the North Platte, Wind, Big Horn and the Yellowstone rivers. The Snake River in northwest Wyoming eventually drains into the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean, as does the Green River through the Colorado River Basin.
The continental divide forks in the south central part of the state in an area known as the Great Divide Basin where the waters that flow or precipitate into this area remain there and cannot flow to any ocean. Instead, because of the overall aridity of Wyoming, water in the Great Divide Basin simply sinks into the soil or evaporates.
Several rivers begin or flow through the state, including the Yellowstone River, Bighorn River, Green River, and the Snake River.
More than 48% of the land in Wyoming is owned by the U.S. Government, leading Wyoming to rank sixth in the US in total acres and fifth in percentage of a state's land owned by the Federal government. This amounts to about 30,099,430acres (121,808.1km2) owned and managed by the U.S. Government. The state government owns an additional 6% of all Wyoming lands, or another 3,864,800acres (15,640km2).

Bed Bugs | Health Department | City of Alexandria, VA
Makinga Come Back
Bed bugs have once again emerged as a nuisance pest problem in the United States. Alexandria has seen increasing infestations, affecting hotel rooms to apartments to residential homes. Because bedbugs arent known to transmit disease, they are not considered a public health threat. However, their re-emergence and the increasing number of inquiries and infestations have prompted the Alexandria Health Department to take a proactive response. This nuisance pest can still cause skin irritation and sleepless nights.
The bed bug (Cimex lectularius) is a wingless, red-brown, blood-sucking insect (as seen in the picture) that grows up toseven mm in length and has a lifespan fromfour months up toone year. Bed bugs hide in cracks and crevices in beds, wooden furniture, floors, and walls during the daytime and emerge at night to feed on their preferred host: humans.
Issues involving bed bug complaints in the City of Alexandria were first noted in 2005. Multi-dwelling complexes like hotels, apartments, and assisted living homes have reported bed bug infestations. Incoming calls to the Vector-borne Illness Prevention Program regarding bed bugs are on the rise.
Public education efforts are ongoing and target specific audience groups, like senior citizens, rental apartment dwellers and managers, and hotel management authorities, to help manage this escalating public health nuisance. In response to the re-emerging bedbug public health issue, a brochure was developed in order to help people understand the recommendations put forth to aid in the control and riddance of bed bugs. The recommendations are important to prevent bugs from being transported to other areas and to aid in proper treatment.
These documents have been distributed to various Cityagencies and businesses. Click on the link below to get copies of these brochures:
Immediately report the problem to your landlord or management company; they may have a plan already in place to deal with the problem. Simply discarding beds and bedding is NOT a sound approach to bed bug management. Bed bugs will spread quickly to walls, molding, ceilings, light fixtures, electronics, picture frames and spaces within and along floor boards, and the edges of carpets. It is difficult to manage a bed bug problem by yourself, so it is always a good idea to hire a licensed Pest Control company. Bed bugs are likely being transferred from place to place through infested furniture and discarded objects. DO NOT take furniture from in or around a trash area even though you may not see bugs they may be present. If you are discarding furniture that may have bed bugs be sure to slash mattresses and plush furniture, break box spring frames, and label items with the word bed bugs to prevent the spread of bed bugs in your community. Wrap discarded items in plastic sheeting and tape to avoid dropping bed bugs during transport.
Controlling bed bugs is a difficult and time consuming activity. However, bed bugs can be eliminated with a coordinated effort that includes cooperation of the residents and landlord or property management. There is no single tool or activity that, used alone, will eliminate bed bugs, including pesticides. Multiple techniques are always required because bed bugs are small, good at hiding, and can live without feeding for up to a year. Treatment of a living area for bed bugs should focus on containment of the infestation. Do everything possible to avoid spreading bed bugs to new locations. A combination of the following steps will be needed for bed bug control:
Clean and organize the bed, bedroom, other living areas, furniture and belongings, including elimination of clutter
Physical removal of bed bugs and eggs using a vacuum (dispose of the vacuum bag immediately, bugs can survive and crawl back out of the bag)
