Bed Bug Solutions in American Samoa Let’s put the hurt on …

Bed bugs are small parasitic insects. Their species name is Cimicidae and the most common type of bed bug insect is called Cimex lectularius. This breed of parasite affects us the most because their preferred food supply is human blood.

Bed bugs in themselves aren't specifically harmful to humans, but let's face it, any creature which feeds by breaking the skin of it's victim and sucking it's blood is going to cause health issues. Think mosquito! When a bed bug bites you, it is introducing into your bloodstream any bacteria which happen to be on it's mouth parts. You can certainly expect rashes, itching, and other discomfort.

For most people, the psychological effect of a bed bug infestation is the worst part. If you go outside in the summer time in American Samoa, chances are, you're going to get mosquito bites. But, when you go indoors, by and large, the problem is left outside. Any mosquitoes that follow you inside can be swiftly dealt with. Not so with bed bugs. They live in your house! They thrive where you're most vulnerable - asleep in your bed. If you have, or even suspect, a bed bug infestation, you can expect serious sleep deprivation.

You've probably read that bed bugs are making a come back in American Samoa. Not quite a plague yet, but the nasty little pests are spreading rapidly. There are many factors involved in their resurgence. People move around a lot more. The insecticides that almost wiped out bed bugs (DDT based) are no longer used because of other health risks. We don't hot wash any more - we wash our clothes using cold or warm cycles - which only result in clean bedbugs!

Bed bugs can hitch a ride to your home with almost ridiculous ease. Stay in a hotel, they can get in the folds of your suitcase. Take a flight; they can already be passengers on your seat. Visit someone who already has an infestation, your coat is their taxi.

These are persistent nasty little pests, but they are not "super bugs". A bed bug infestation can be beaten, or prevented if you follow certain precautions. One thing for sure, Exterminators are expensive! We've found some informational products that may help. Let us know. We'd appreciate your feedback, and any tips or suggestions that could help others beat these pests.

Arizona tenants, landlords dealing with bed bugs

Bedbugs can infest clothes, linens, toys and furniture. Their bites can cause painful rashes, swelling and itching. When Arizona apartment dwellers find themselves living through an infestation, they can discover they are at the mercy of their landlords.

The pests are a problem at apartments and hotels across the country. Complaints about bedbugs in the Valley litter the Maricopa County Environmental Services website and consumer-protection sites established to warn people about infestations. Tenants often are dismayed to discover that Arizona law holds them responsible to prove the problem isnt their fault.

Renters can face accusations that they brought the bedbugs with them. They also must comply with legally binding rental addendums that require notifying landlords about bedbugs within seven days of moving in to a property. They also are required to give landlords an opportunity to fix the problem.

Those who break leases and move out often forfeit rent payments and have security deposits withheld. Those who stay must turn over the apartments to pest-control specialists and submit to rigorous mediation processes akin to partial quarantines.

Stay or go, many people are forced to abandon furniture, clothes and bedding, costing them thousands of dollars.

The burden of proof is on the tenant. ... It is a problem we have seen. It is a problem we will continue to see, said Stanley Silas, senior staff attorney at Community Legal Services Inc.

The flat, red-brown insects are parasites that feed on blood. They are nocturnal and about the same size as a fly, although they are wingless. They live in small cracks in walls, furniture and mattress seams and are often hard to find. More often, people find traces of the bugs in clumps of feces or bits of shed skin.

Bedbugs are transient; they can move from one location to another on furniture and clothes. Bedbug bites can leave rows of raised lumps, usually on limbs and the face.

Bedbugs cross all social and economic statuses. Bedbugs dont care about your income, Silas said.

Former tenants at two metro Phoenix apartment complexes, the Moorings at Mesa Cove, in Mesa, and Biltmore on the Lake, in Phoenix, say they reported bedbug problems within days of moving in and that apartment managers were initially uncooperative or refused to return deposits after they moved out.

5.0 out of 5 stars DIY that anybody can do and for less costs!, September 13, 2012

This review is from: Bed Bug Spray - Bed Bug Bully 32oz Eliminate bed bugs, eggs and larvis concentrated formula (Lawn & Patio)

1) Take ALL bedding, including your pillows, and wash and dry on high heat (or simply throw away and start over if you prefer). Bed bugs are very susceptible to high heat.

2) Vacuum your entire room, including along your base boards. Then grab your attachments and vacuum your mattress, too! Take the vacuum outside to dump in a garbage bag, tie tightly and toss in your outside bin. You don't want to take the chance of any escapee's running for cover back into your room.

Bed bugs plague Medford establishments

Medford, Ore -- Little biting bed bugs are nipping up trouble at the Medford Gospel Mission. NBC5 News has also received word that a Medford motel, the Rogue Valley Inn, recently had it's fare share of the critter too.

Jackson County Environmental Health Program Manager, Chad Peterson said over the last couple years, there has been a rise in bed bug infestations. He said it's possibly because of more people traveling in and out the area.

The most recent bed bug infestation happened about a week ago at the Medford Gospel Mission. Bill Gourley, the Mission's Director said the problem started about a year ago. They were able to get rid of the bugs for a while, but they sporadically returned. A week ago, they came back again, but a little stronger.

Gourley said they've called in pest control and are focused on getting rid of the annoying critters.

One resident we spoke to said it's not so bad and he's grateful to have a place to help him get back on track.

"I think they try real hard to get rid of them. They spray, they fumigate, they do the best they can to keep them out," said Billy Chamberlin, a resident at the Gospel Mission.

"We also changed out mattresses, changed our procedure for our bedding and stuff so that we're running the bedding through the laundry each day," said Gourley.

The Mission is also brainstorming ways to keep the bugs from coming back in.

Gourley said one idea is putting in place something he calls a hot box. He said it's where people place their belongings in a heated box. The heat kills the pests.

Another way to avoid getting bit, wash and dry your bedding and clothes.
