Killing Bed Bugs is No Easy Task

DES MOINES, Iowa Residents of a low income apartment complex in Des Moines who have filed a lawsuit against the city arent the only ones in the area dealing with bed bugs.

On Wednesday, 55 residents of the Royal View Manor apartment complex filed a class action lawsuit against the City of Des Moines claiming the city isnt doing enough to combat a bed bug infestation.

At Springer Home Professional Services in Des Moines, managers say over the past five years killing bed bugs has become a major part of their business. The company has dealt with them at schools, health care facilities, and an increasing amount of private residences.

Managers say the bugs are most common in early winter when people are traveling for the holidays and late spring as kids come home for college.

Bed bugs are often spread at low income housing units due to the use of second hand furniture and clothing. A good eye test to see if a mattress or couch has been infested is to look for brown stains.

In their digestion process, they leave a lot of stains on things like bed linens, said Eddie Holman, General Manager at Springer Home Solution Services.

Getting rid of the bugs completely is virtually impossible according to Holman.

The bugs can reproduce in just a couple of weeks, lay dozens of eggs each week, and can live for up to 300 days.

The bed bug is a hitchhiker. They can attach to clothing. They can get inside automobiles. People are becoming more mobile and its just a process of bed bugs getting into a home, reproducing, and they reproduce quite fast, said Holman.

Holman adds that controlling bed bugs requires more than one visit. Springer will often visit a home or building regularly for up to a year to control the pests.

Traveling Without Bed Bug Hitchhikers | Muskego, WI Patch

In times past, trip planners probably didnt have a Bed Bug checklist to go over as part of the trip itinerary, but these days it is a necessity.

According to a survey conducted by the NPMA (National Pest Management Association), 75% of pest professionals indicated that they have encountered infestations of Bed Bugs in hotels and motels.

Using the tips below, you can lessen the likelihood of hitchhiking Bed Bugs following you to your home.

Before unpacking your items, thoroughly inspect the entire room. Check behind sofas, chairs and behind headboards. Youre looking for anything from live, moving red/reddish-brown insects and their eggs to blood spots and fecal matter.

Check the beds. Pull back the sheets and inspect the mattress seams, particularly at the corners. Look for spotting or small stains.

If you find any signs of Bed Bugs, change establishment or request a new room at the current establishment. If you do need to change rooms, make sure you do not move to a room adjacent or directly above or below the suspected infestation. Bed Bugs can easily travel from room to room.

Consider packing your suitcases in protective plastic trash bags or covers during your stay to lessen the chance of Bed Bugs entering your belongings. Keeping your things in the bathroom, especially in the bathtub, will also lessen the chances of Bed Bugs entering them.

Keep all of your dirty laundry in a sealed bag during your stay.

Upon returning home, unpack and inspect your luggage before entering your home. Vacuum out suitcases, place clothing in protected bags and wash all garments in hot water before storing them back into your drawers or closets.

If you find that you have in fact brought home some Bed Bug hitchhikers, it is best to call a licensed pest management professional for help.

Class Action Suit Filed Against City Over Bed Bug Infestation

DES MOINES, Iowa People who live in a city owned apartment complex say the place is infested with bed bugs and that Des Moines city leaders arent doing enough to solve the problem.

So the residents are getting the courts involved.

More than fifty tenants at the Royal View Manor apartment complex, a 200-unit facility for low income families have joined a class action lawsuit trying to force the city to clean it up and pay for damages.

At Royal View Manor, residents say they dont have much and what they do have, theyre being forced to throw away.

I lost my love seat, I lost my bed, said Julie Davis, a resident.

Most of the stuff is stacked up near the dumpster. All of it is infested with bed bugs.

Its getting to the point I want to move out here and find somewhere else to go, said Lewis.

Dozens claim to be victims of the annoying, at times painful pests. Few have as many scars as Orna Tigner and her neighbor Jeanette McDowell.

Its just so devastating, its humiliating. Youre embarrassed, said McDowell.

Both admit the city has hired pest control companies to heat treat and spray their apartments on a regular basis but as soon as the exterminators leave, they say the bugs show right back up.

Fighting Bed Bugs at the Cabell County Library

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Cabell County Library manager Judy Rule would be content to just read to kids, but lately her duties have also included pest control.

"They're nasty little creatures, she said. We certainly don't want to take them home with us."

Rule says over the past few months, patrons returned six books with bed bugs within the pages.

Those people are banned from checking out any more items until they can show they've done something at their homes to get rid of the bed bugs.

"Apartments that are not being sprayed professionally seem to be the ones that are more affected," Rule said.

A spokesperson with the Cabell Huntington Health Department says bed bugs do not carry diseases, but they do like tight places and human blood.

Rule says her staff has been checking each book as they're returned to make sure there's no residue or bugs.

They're also using sticky strips to try to catch the tiny pests. So far, only a couple have turned up.

If a book is returned that is thought to be questionable, its placed in a bug zapping box in a back room.

"It's something to be concerned about, circulation specialist Jason Roach said. It's certainly not something to be paranoid about."

Bed Bugs Guide: How do I know if I have bed bugs …

How do I know if I have bed bugs?

This is a tough one. It can be hard to tell if you've got them or not, because they are pretty small, only come out for very short periods, and because they are pretty good at hiding. First off, you should look for some key signs.

1) Waste - Bed bugs create a lot of waste, and that is harder to hide than they are. It can consist of dark spots on your mattress (which can be blood, feces, etc.) or of shed skins, eggs, dead bed bugs, etc. You may find it inside your mattress, in the box springs, or in the linens. It looks like this:

2) Bites - You should be seeing little red bites on you without really knowing why. People rarely catch bed bugs in the act - they come out when you are asleep, and only bite for a short period. Also, like many bugs, you cannot feel the bite until a few minutes after it happens. The bites are very hard to identify - most doctors actually can't tell you for sure what they're from just by looking at them. There are a few examples here, here, here, and here.

3) Hiding places - Look in all the key spots where they could hide. This means the mattress and around it, folds in the linens, curtains, and nearby furniture. Look for the waste or dark spots. You probably won't see live ones, but they look like little mini-cockroaches.

4) Catch them in the act - Keep a flashlight by your bed, and turn it on about an hour before dawn and watch the sheets closely for movement. Bed bugs usually bite around then, but if you get up or move too much they will go back into hiding. This can be hard to do - if you've only got a few of them, they only need to come out once a week or so anyway, so you might get unlucky and not see any, even though you have them.
