Two of the most common signs that you have bed bugs are:

If youre wondering how they get into your home, the answer is simple: you bring them in. Bed bugs, as the name suggests, primarily make their home in beds or wherever people sleep. They live in sheets, mattresses, baseboards, and furniture. Bed bugs are primarily nocturnal but can also be active during the day, travelling as far as 20-feet from their hiding spots.

Due to their small size, fast movement, and nocturnal lifestyle, bed bugs can easily crawl into your luggage when you travel or ride along on your friends PJs when they come for a sleepover.

Here are some of the common places where you can pick up bed bugs:

Bed bugs dont discriminate by income, tidiness or geography. They are found in all 50 states in sanitary, unsanitary, low and high income households. If you leave your home or invite people over, there is an opportunity for bed bugs to get in.

Disgruntled man releases bedbugs in Maine city office – WLOS

The city manager in Augusta, Maine, says the municipal office building had to be sprayed for bedbugs after a man threw a cup of the pests onto an office counter and about 100 of them scattered off. (Courtesy William Bridgeo)

The city manager in Augusta, Maine, says the municipal office building had to be sprayed for bedbugs after a man threw a cup of the pests onto an office counter and about 100 of them scattered off.

City Manager William Bridgeo tells the Kennebec Journal the man apparently complained Friday to the code enforcement office about bedbugs at his former apartment then left, but returned after he showed the cup of bugs to a manager at his new apartment and was told he couldn't live there.

Bridgeo says the man let the bugs loose in the General Assistance Office where he asked for a form to request assistance and apparently was told he didn't qualify.

Police didn't immediately release the man's name or say if any charges would be filed.

Students return to DC elementary school after bed bugs, rat infestation cleaned up – WJLA

WASHINGTON (ABC7)

It was back to class at their home school for hundreds of students at Savoy Elementary in Southeast Washington on Monday morning.

The school was closed for three weeks to get rid of rats and bed bugs that were plaguing the facility.

The problem started in the fall and persisted into the winter. Earlier this month the school was shut down and students were transferred to Ferebee Hope Elementary School for class. During that time the school was cleaned from top to bottom, a new front lobby floor was put in and all soft materials such as blankets and carpets were replaced. They also located and repaired vulnerable spots in the school where rats could get in.

One of the challenges that we face right now is that we want to make sure that our families, teachers and students feel comfortable, said Deputy Chief of School Eugene Pinkard.

Pinkard was on hand to welcome back students and parents and to give the media a tour of the cleaned up facility. Some parents were anxious to have their students return.

Mother Pauline Richardson told ABC7, I hope they got the bed bug situation under control. Hopefully this is a fresh start.

Both the Department of Health and Department of General Services inspected the facility and say it is safe for students and teachers to return.

DC elementary school shut down for bed bug, pest clean up – WJLA

WASHINGTON (ABC7)

Three pest control trucks lined the street in front of Savoy Elementary School Friday afternoon. Cleaning crews hauled supplies inside, while parents brought their kids outside, wondering where their students would go next.

If they dont find the source, its going to be a problem, said Patricia Hayes, whose granddaughter attends the Southeast Washington school.

The crews scoured the building for rats and bed bugs. Parents told us it has been infested for weeks.

It was a disgrace, said parent Reginald Cross. I didnt find out until last Friday, and once I heard about it, I took my daughter out of school for the rest of the week.

Now, all the students will have to temporarily attend another school until the infestation is removed.

Who is going to replace all [my granddaughters] things because we threw away all her stuff away, even though she didnt get bit, said Hayes.

DC Public Schools released this statement: DC Public Schools will close Savoy Elementary School on Monday, February 6, and Tuesday, February 7, 2017. DC Public Schools and the Department of General Services will conduct a thorough cleaning of the building beginning this evening. We will also replace all soft materials in the building, including rugs, cots, blankets, and pillows. After the cleaning, we will work with the Department of Health to ensure that the building passes a rigorous safety and health inspection. During the cleaning and the subsequent inspection, the Savoy community will temporarily relocate. We will update the school community on Sunday regarding where students should plan to attend school for the next several weeks as we prepare a school building that is conducive to teaching and learning. We will also communicate where Savoy students can access meal service (breakfast, lunch, and supper) on Monday and Tuesday. If families have any concerns about their childrens health, they should contact their general doctor.

Bed bug fact sheet – King County

Bed bugs are not a result of poor housekeeping. Anyone can have bed bugs. People bring bed bugs into their homes unknowingly in infested luggage, backpacks, purses, furniture, bedding, shoes or clothing. They can also travel between apartments through cracks in walls and floors.

Total release pesticide foggers or 'bug bombs' can force bed bugs into adjacent apartments.DO NOT USE: 'Bug Bombs'.They do not control bed bugs and using 'bug bombs' improperly can be dangerous and spreads pesticide throughout your home.

If you have bed bugs and live in a rental property, notify the property manager immediately.Do not use pesticides to treat for bed bugs yourself."General use" pesticides are not effective against bed bugs and their use may cause the bed bugs to spread to adjacent units.

Bed bugs can hide anywhere but usually close to where people sleep. Find bed bugs early by inspecting your bed and bedding each time you remove the sheets for washing. Check around the edge of the mattress and box springs, in seams and under buttons and tags. Remove the thin cover material on the underside of your box springs, a common hiding place, and look inside. If you have a headboard, footboard or bed frame, carefully inspect the corners, cracks and screw holes for bed bugs.

Bed bugs can hide in nearby bedroom furniture, baseboard heaters, window sills, curtains, nightstands and dressers. Remove the drawers and look inside in corners, in cracks, screw holes, and under each piece.

Using a flashlight and 10x magnifying glass can help to spot the small bugs in dark, tight areas.
