Right to a bed bug free environment: For tenants in New York, the right to a bedbug-free environment is included in New York City's Housing and Maintenance Code, Subchapter 2, Article 4, which specifically names bedbugs in the list of insects the landlord is legally obligated to eradicate.

The New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) lists bedbugs as a Class B violation, which means that they are considered hazardous and that the landlord has 30 days to correct the problem. Adults are reddish-brown or brown, oval, flattened, wingless bugs. The hind wings are absent and the front wings reduced to padlike structures. There are many signs of their presence in a home. See the external links at the bottom of this page.

Similar species: Sometimes misidentified as small cockroaches. Also, bat bugs are nearly identical to bed bugs, but their primary host is bats. You need strong magnification to tell them apart: On bat bugs, the hairs along the edge of the pronotum (the shieldlike structure just behind the head) are as long as, or longer than, the width of the eye. On bed bugs, those hairs are shorter than the eye width. Bat bugs can infest human homes just like bed bugs, except they usually arrive on bats. If you have bat bugs, then you probably also have (or had) bats in your home or attic, too. If your bats leave for some reason, then the hungry bugs may wander around and find you.

Bed bug scare closes Towson,Maryland district courthouse …

TOWSON, Md. -- The district courthouse in Towson, Maryland was shut down by bed bugs this week, and it's not the first time, according to CBS Baltimore.

Officials say two bed bugs were found in a file room Wednesday.

The same room, the station says, where one of the insects was discovered in December.

"It's very concerning because the safety and health of our employees is a top priority, also for the public," Terri Charles, Maryland judiciary spokesperson, told CBS Baltimore.

According to the station, the courthouse closed early Wednesday and an exterminator brought in determined there was no infestation. Jeff Hauf of Regional Pest Management says it's likely the bugs were brought in by someone on the outside.

"They're hitchhikers. So when they have them at home, they get carried in," said Hauf.

The courthouse isn't the only government building in the area that's recently had to shut down due to bed bugs.

Late last year, they were found at the Maryland State Highway Administration building in chairs at a security desk,

And, the station adds, in September, workers at the Maryland Department of the Environment got a day off after bed bugs were found at headquarters.
