12 OYS: Bed bug outbreak at Children's Hospital of Georgia contained

News 12 at 6 o'clock / May 14, 2014

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- They may be small, but one bug is causing problems at a local hospital.

News 12 has learned a team of exterminators is at the Children's Hospital of Georgia eradicating bed bugs.

It is a problem more and more hospitals are facing. Like most parents, Dale Swinney said he wants only the best for his newborn son Jaxon. When the infant had a medical crisis, he said he took him to Children's Hospital of Georgia.

"As far as the surgical teams, the emergency room teams, they are the best in the world," Swinney said.

During a recent stay, Swinney said his son was bitten by bed bugs.

"We had noticed that he had a little rash coming up, but we figured it was from maybe the blankets," Swinney said.

He said the hospital later confirmed it had found bed bugs in two patient rooms, and a nearby waiting area. Despite how sterile a hospital strives to be, bed bugs can still be a problem in hospitals and other places.

Jim Wilde in GRU's Department of Emergency Medicine said where there are people, there is the potential for bed bugs.

"Any place where you have a large turnover of beds, in other words a large turnover of people going into beds, daily, hotels, hospitals, you're going to have bed bugs," Wilde said.

Tips to stay safe during bedbug season

It's the prime time of the year for bedbugs, but an entomologist has advice for avoiding them. (AP)

WASHINGTON -- Warmer weather and travel season raise the risk for bedbugs, but you can take precautions.

"It's a little bit warmer. That means household temperatures are going to be warmer. That means bedbugs are going to complete life cycles a little quicker. They're going to be a little more active," says University of Maryland entomologist Mike Raupp.

People also step up their travel this time of year, attending graduations, weddings and taking vacations.

"This may bring them into contact with areas where bedbugs are simply more common, hotels, motels, and this is an opportunity to bring these very clever hitchhikers home with you," Raupp says.

What can you do to dodge the pests?

"No. 1, whenever I stay at a hotel or motel, I look at the mattress very carefully," Raupp says.

Look for tiny specks along the seam of the mattress or on the box spring. If you see evidence of bedbugs, get a new room -- and not the room next door.

There's an online bedbug registry that lists hotel where bugs have been detected. But Raupp points out that bedbugs can be found at any hotel or motel.

"Bedbugs -- they know no bounds. They're going to infest high-end places, low-end places and every place in between," Raupp says.

Tenants complain treatment insufficient for bed bugs in Parnassus Manor

Published: Friday, May 9, 2014, 1:51a.m.

Tenants in Parnassus Manor in New Kensington are concerned that a bed bug infestation is not being properly treated, but officials with the Westmoreland County Housing Authority said they are following protocol.

I'd say it's been going on for about six weeks, said Beverly Hughley. They have been to my apartment three times so far, and the problem is still there.

Hughley, who has lived in the facility for seven years, said she feels the infestation isn't being properly treated.

Michael Washowich, executive director for the Westmoreland County Housing Authority, said they are treating two cases of bed bugs that they have been notified about in Parnassus Manor, 325 Main St.

The tenants have brought a couple cases to us, and we're following our protocol, Washowich said, and we're in those units on a weekly basis to see if those treatments are effective.

He said that as soon as the authority is notified, officials inspect the unit for bed bugs and implement an internal treatment plan. The housing authority follows up weekly until the infestation is treated.

If the problem persists, he said a professional exterminator would be called.

We ask all the tenants to come to us in a timely manner so that we can begin a treatment plan based on the infestation at that time, he said. We follow through with that 100 percent.

Hughley said some tenants are afraid to report that they have bed bugs for fear of being evicted.

Bed Bugs Biting in Tennessee Motel

A mother and a daughters stay in one motel in Tennessee ended badly. And the culprits are the small yet horrible bed bugs.

Mother Telika Howard and her daughter spent a night in a Mid-South motel on April 10 while waiting to transfer to their new place. But the morning after, her kid was itching all over. After a look at their sheet, they found out that it was because of the bugs.

A local hospital confirmed that the marks in Howards daughter were bed bug bites. And so, the motel management transferred them to another room.

Nonetheless, Howard wasnt satisfied of that move. According to her, the manager was not nice at all and even said that they couldve brought in the critters. Upset, she expressed that she did not get the kind of service that she paid for.

Shelby County Health Department shared that the hotel was already reported for bed bugs twice. It relayed that they happened on April 14 and April 17 of this year.
