In any infestation, you will find bed bugs in several stages of development. An adult bed bug is relatively easy to see as it is about the size of an apple seed, and resembles the shape of a small tick. (The photo above shows a suburban Wichita bed bug at about twice life-size.) It is in the juvenile stages that bed bugs are hardest to see. In the first stage from the egg, they have no color and will blend in with their surroundings. After their first blood meal, they will have a dark brownish color but still be tiny - about the size of a large piece of sand.

No, bed bugs are not found just on beds. They can be found anywhere throughout a structure. The most common place to find them, though, is at the bed. Bed bugs, like most parasites, will stay fairly close to their food source - us. They feed primarily from midnight to 5 a.m., and most of us are in our beds at that time. That's why 80% of the time bed bugs will be found within just a few feet - hiding on the mattress & box springs, head board and bed frame, and night stand. These are the most common but not the only places - we've also found them behind picture frames, in lamps and clock radios, the list goes on.

(Note: Not all pest control companies are proficient or knowledgeable in the control of bed bugs!) They will perform an inspection of your premises to determine how serious the problem is. Most experienced companies have treatment methods available that will not require the disposal of your belongings. If after their initial inspection they feel it is necessary to do so, they will inform you at that time.
