Researchers create easy, cheap way to trap bed bugs
GAINESVILLE, Fla., May 27 (UPI) --Researchers devised a bedbug trap that could be built with household items including two disposable plastic containers, masking tape, glue and talc.
A recent survey by the National Pest Management Association showed nearly every pest management professional in the United States dealt with a bedbug infestation within the past year.
Phil Koehler, an urban entomology professor at the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, said the traps catch and collect the bedbugs as they travel between people and the places where the bedbugs hide.
Koehler; Benjamin Hottel, an entomology doctoral student; Rebecca Baldwin, an assistant urban entomology professor; and Roberto Pereira, an associate research scientist created their trap with about $1 worth of household items.
The instructions can be found here and a video can be found below:
Koehler said the bedbug trap is pretty much foolproof and effective.
"It's really hard to mess this up to the point that you'd hurt anything," Koehler said in a statement.
Entomologists say bedbugs are becoming more resistant to pesticides, making the pesticide-free device even more desirable.

The conviction that insects are crawling on, biting, or burrowing in the skin, when no arthropod is involved, is termed"delusory parasitosis." I run into this quite frequently when dealing with Pest Control. However Bed Bugs in particular seems to be a pest these people cling to. Because Bed Bugs are so small and hard to find, humans can almost be talked into having them. I get a call. She's being attacked by bugs but you can't see them. She has been to 4 doctors and has not solved the problem. She has dryer sheets taped around her legs and washes herself down with alcohol nightly. There is some type of White Dust all around the walls and in the furniture. She says she has bombed the house 3 times. But she is yet to see a bug ! What is it? What should we do as Pest Control Operators ? Number 1 DON'T TREAT ! Do a through inspection. Be very nice to the customer because they are having a problem. Unfortunately it may be a problem we can't fix. I get calls like this all the time. I have learned how to better respond to this type of customer.
Usually there is no insect but is a physical, physiological or psychological stimulus. Dry, sensitive skin is particularly susceptible to these sensations. Particles impinging on the skin as a result of static electricity may be perceived as "bites" or "stings." This is particularly true of materials with sharp projections such as paper, metal, and fiberglass fragments. Carpet fibers also may be attracted to lower portions of the body because of static electricity, and these too can feel like pinpricks.
Table 1. Common attributes of DP sufferersa
A. Most common in older people (Lyell 1983, Webb 1993, Trabert 1995, Goddard 1995, White 1997)
B. Disproportionately female (St. Aubin 1981, Lyell 1983, Webb 1993, Trabert 1995)
C. Exhibit behaviors such as:
(1) quitting their jobs (Monk and Rao 1994, Goddard 1995 )
(2) burn/destroy furniture (St. Aubin 1981, Lyell 1983, Gieler and Knoll 1990, Goddard 1995)
(3) abandon homes (Waldron 1962, Lyell 1983, Driscoll et al. 1993, Goddard 1995)
(4) obsessive laundering/dry cleaning (St. Aubin 1981, Lyell 1983) boil clothing and bed linens

Detector Dogs: the fast way to find bed bugs
PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WMBF) - They hide in your mattress - and feed on your blood, we're talking about bed bugs.
Hotels are one of the most common places you can pick them up and with so many people traveling this weekend - you really need to watch out. There's a new way to find those bugs that's being used right here on the Grand Strand.
Dogs are called man's best friend for a reason. Detector dogs, can be a fast and easy way to sniff out bed bugs.
Yaro, is a detector dog and a bed bug expert. It takes the canine less than five minutes to sniff bed bugs in a motel room, a process that can take a human, several hours.
"It's more efficient, time wise, and they're actually finding the bug, where humans we have to go out and look, take off light sockets, pull the furniture apart," says Russell Goodale with Merrill's Detector Dog Services. "It's just more of a detailed search for us to do, versus the dog picking up the scent."
Merrill's Detector Dog Services say the easiest way for humans to pick up the bugs is to follow the dark tracks they leave behind. Look for dark feces, or blood smeared on sheets; but the most efficient way to find the pests is scent- which is where the trained dogs come into play.
Think about it, the faster we find the bugs, the less chance they have to multiply.
While they're not proven to cause disease, they eat your blood; this can lead to a rash, loss in sleep, or even eat at your wallet.
"They multiply rapidly and you get to the point where you're gonna have to get an exterminator coming in to get rid of them, it could cost you into the thousands of dollars," says Goodale.
How do we avoid bed bugs?
