Tips for Staying Bed Bug Free This Travel Season
Evansville, IN (PRWEB) April 17, 2014
Since making a resurgence several years ago, bed bugs have proven to be a difficult and hard to treat pest, infesting homes and hotels, retail locations and even places of employment. Although a year-round concern, experts from the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) want people to be on high alert prior to heading into the busy summer travel season, declaring April 20th the start of Bed Bug Awareness Week. In recognition of the observance, Action Pest Control is advising people in Indiana, Kentucky, and Illinois to be extra vigilant to help curb the spread of this blood-sucking pest.
Summer is a prime time for bed bug infestations because travel increases and people are more likely to pick up bed bugs during transit between locations, said Kevin Pass, President at Action Pest Control. We encourage all travelers, from college students coming home for break to families going on vacation, to keep a close eye out for bed bugs looking for a ride home in suitcases.
Public vigilance can start with careful inspections upon check in at lodging accommodations. According to 2013 research by the NPMA and the University of Kentucky, 75 percent of pest control professionals indicated that they have encountered infestations of bed bugs in hotels and motels in the past year. Hotels are taking a proactive stance on protecting their establishments from bed bugs with strict protocols that include routine inspections, but guests also play an important role in bringing bed bugs to managements attention and to help limit the spread of bed bugs to other locations.
To prevent an unwanted encounter with bed bugs this summer, Action Pest Control shares the following prevention tips for travelers:

Health district reaches out to bedbug victims
By THOMAS GALLICK ThisWeek Community News Wednesday April 16, 2014 8:25 AM
The Delaware General Health District hopes its new program will help take some of the bite out of paying for bedbug treatments.
The district announced last week it would launch the Bed Bug Treatment Forgiveness Loan program. Through the program, the agency will pay for half -- up to $500 -- of certain district residents' bedbug treatments.
Adam Howard, the health district's residential services manager, said one resident requested an application for the program in its first week. He said it's hard to discern how many county residents are living with bedbugs because there are no reporting requirements.
Bedbugs are brown, oval-shaped insects that feed on blood. The bugs often live in mattresses and other pieces of furniture.
"We believe it is an underreported problem," Howard said. "There is a stigma associated with it."
Although bedbugs have not been shown to spread disease, Howard said the district saw treatment of the pests as another opportunity to serve its residents. The district already collects and analyzes what information it can about bedbug infestations and offers workshops on how to identify and treat bedbugs multiple times per year.
The program will help to fund treatments at single-family homes in which the owner has lived for more than one year.
Howard said the program excludes rental properties.
"That's more of a cooperation that needs to occur with the owner and renter," he said.

Customer Complains of Bed Bugs in San Antonio Motel; My Cleaning Products Offers Help to Kill Bed Bugs Quickly
San Antonio, TX (PRWEB) April 16, 2014
In San Antonio, a customer of one motel complained of being bitten by bed bugs. In connection with it, My Cleaning Products recommended a pesticide-exempt bed bug spray in order to help the public kill bed bugs fast.
A report from mysanantonio.com dated April 10, 2014 identified the guest as Tony Sabbs. Based on his statement, it related that he was bitten on the second night of his stay at a motel in the east of the city.
Sabbs spotted the critters on his arm and bed, shared the report. And following that, he complained to the housekeepers of the motel and its front desk. In response, the management closed the room and got it inspected and treated.
Additionally, the post relayed that Sabbs was refunded.
Here is an excerpt from the post Bed Bugs Found in San Antonio Motel by My Cleaning Products.
As you know, bed bugs are very common in hotels. So many people have already reported being bitten by them while staying in various accommodations across the country. Recently, Tony Sabbs became one of them.
Staying in one motel on the east side of San Antonio, Sabbs said that he was bitten by the critters on his second night at the place. He detailed that he spotted them crawling on his arm and on his bed.
According to My Cleaning Product, bed bugs are really common in places with a high turnover of people every day. And so, it commented that besides hotels and motels, residences are vulnerable to their presence as well.
Because of that and the fact that bed bugs are sneaky, it advised the public to prepare a bed bug spray so one could exterminate bed bugs promptly. That way, the worst of their effects could be prevented, it stated.
