Cimex lectularius, or the common bed bugs, feed on the blood of mammals and are adapted to living with humans, according to the University of Kentucky. These pesky insects are the source of physical discomfort, restless nights and can become a financial burden. They appear in a number of places, including hotels, college dorms and the average home or rental property despite cleanliness. California enforces an "implied warranty of habitability," which addresses residential vermin.

Bed bugs have a knack for tucking their brownish, flat, oval-shaped bodies into the most obscure places and are often mistaken for ticks. Their size and ability to successfully hide contribute to the difficulty in controlling them. Signs of bed bugs include dried excrement that appears as a reddish or brown stain on mattresses and box springs and blood smears on bed sheets according to the University of Kentucky. A moderate to heavy infestation encourages them to spread out at which time they can be found anywhere in the home. These small insects hide during the day and feed on their hosts at night. Itchy welts, bumps or bites that appear after sleeping are a sign of an infestation. Though they may not transfer disease and the physical effect is minimal, bed bugs can cause insomnia due to the fear of being bitten at night.

The eradication of bed bugs requires diligence, persistence and patience. It may also require a large sum of money. A typical family may spend up to $5,000 on inspections, storage fees and exterminators, and owners of large rental properties can spend up to $80,000 according to "The New York Times." As a result, tenants and landlords may tussle over the responsibility for the appearance of the bugs. This is where California's "implied warranty of habitability" addresses the very basic requirements for a suitable resolution.

The California Supreme Court case Green v. Superior Court set the standard for California's habitability law. Under this law, a unit must provide "clean and sanitary buildings, grounds, and appurtenances (for example, a garden or a detached garage), free from debris, filth, rubbish, garbage, rodents, and vermin," states the California Department of Consumer Affairs. The "implied warranty of habitability," established in the case makes a landlord responsible for the repair of serious defects that affect habitability. Tenants who suspect bed bugs or other vermin have legal rights and must complete a process to resolve the issue.

In California, tenants have the right to live in a habitable unit, but they must meet their own responsibilities. Keeping the unit clean and free from debris are important even though bed bugs appear in the cleanest of homes. Under California Civil Code Section 1942, tenants can repair and deduct from the rent. In order to repair and deduct, the tenant must notify the landlord in writing of the issue, wait a reasonable period and hire a qualified professional. The reasonable period is 30 days unless the issue is severe. The total expenditure cannot exceed one month's rent, however the option is available twice in a 12-month period. Essentially, the tenant can repair and deduct up to two months of rent in a 12-month period.

Tenants also can move out of the unit immediately without notice. The tenant should still request the landlord eradicate the insects immediately, take pictures of the infestation, provide a letter stating they are vacating under Civil Code Section 1942 and request a final walkthrough. Prior to immediately vacating, consulting an attorney can provide valuable insight into the results of a possible legal battle for property abandonment.

Toronto Bed Bug Heat Treatment Customer Reviews Testimonials

I used this company because they had a warranty. I found them online. The other pest control places did not give a warranty and would only say that they would charge separately for each treatment. Cary Title the owner of Bed Bugs and Beyond asserted that the up front cost would include every treatment until they got the job done. I was skeptical but the company is as good as their warranty. It took five treatments. They not only got rid of the bugs finally but after the initial cost they didnt charge me a thing. And I still have a warranty until the end of October. I know that if the bugs come back or I have a resurgence that I can rely on Bed Bugs and Beyond to come back without any more cost to fix to the problem. They crew is efficient, polite and reliable. A great service and company. I have already recommended this company to other people and property management companies. If you have bed bugs you should use this company to get rid of them.

Barbara, East York, ON

Theres a lot of competition in the Toronto bed bug control market. Bed Bugs and Beyond doesnt take advantage of the hot market. They keep prices fairly low in comparison to other companies offering heat, and offer a 90-day guarantee and a free heat treatment if the bugs do return.

So far, weve been bed-bug free since the initial heat treatment!

Our experience with Bed Bugs & Beyond was great. The owner, Cary, came and did a free inspection on the same day we contacted him even though he had another job in progress elsewhere. The crew who did the treatment was just as compassionate as Cary. They patiently explained the process and helped us and our two cats get out the door bed-bug free so we wouldnt bring them back with us. This involved blowing hot air on us, our bags, and cat carriers as well as inside my car.

Cary did warn us during the inspection that our Ikea furniture would sustain some damage. Indeed, the cheap melamine finishes separated from our dressers. We have been able to super-glue them back down. Our large and expensive Pax wardrobe came through it just fine, though! The only damage to our electronics was to our laser printer, which weve replaced a cost well worth the experience of a good nights sleep

If youve got bed bugs, dont waste your money on steam and vacuum treatments (these things you can do yourself!) and be aware of the fact that chemical fumigation cannot penetrate the nooks and crannies in your walls where these sneaky bugs hang out. Heat is the best way.

I do recommend cleaning up any of the Diatomaceous Earth powder before heat treatment if youve spread it around. The heat fans will blow it around everywhere. Weeks later and Im still cleaning it up!

I also recommend boarding your pets somewhere overnight. Our indoor cats really suffered in the hot house even hours after the treatment. Your house will take 5+ hours to cool off because the walls and floors retain so much heat.

A big thanks to Cary and the Bed Bugs and Beyond crew! Although youre all wonderful people, I hope that I never have to contact you again

Heat Treatment

Click Here To Prepare For Heat Treatment

It was a pleasure to meet with you today and to share my plight with those nasty bed bugs and how I am now rid of them using Advanced Pest Control's services.

South Florida bed bug heat treatment provides area homeowners and business owners a way to eradicate their properties from bed bugs without the use of harmful chemicals. At Advanced Green Pest Control, we use heat technology to effectively kill bed bugs, often in a single treatment, without exposing our clients to dangerous pesticides.

In the past, chemicals were used to kill and control these infestations. However, these bugs are developing immunities to commonly used chemicals, and extermination companies are having to use more and more treatments to effectively kill off the pests. In fact, in a survey of pest control operators performed by the University of Massachusetts, 68 percent of those reporting had to use three or more treatments to effectively get rid of the pests. In your home, this means your family is being exposed to toxins three or more times!

We also advocate the use of heat to get rid of the bugs because of the resistance the critters are developing to pesticides. As the bugs become resistant to one chemical, exterminators must either increase the amount of the chemical, which then increases your exposure, or switch to a different chemical.

Chemical pesticides used for these bugs also wreak havoc on the ecosystem. DDT, once an effective treatment, has been banned because of its effect on wildlife after leaching into the environment. We believe that offering an environmentally friendly option to deal with bed bugs simply makes sense, because we want to protect our natural resources for your children and grandchildren.

Heat treatment works better than conventional pesticides, does not damage the environment, and does not create potential toxins for your family to be exposed to. If you face an infestation, call Advanced Green Pest Control today and ask about our South Florida bed bug heat treatment.

ENY-227/IG083: Bed Bugs and Blood-Sucking Conenose

Bed bugs are blood-feeding insects (Figures 13) that feed mainly on the blood of humans, but also suck blood from other animals, such as birds, bats, and rodents. Bed bugs usually feed at night when people are asleep because the hosts are unaware that they are being fed upon. As bed bugs feed (Figure 3), they inject a salivary secretion into the wound to prevent coagulation. This fluid often causes the skin to itch and become swollen. Scratching causes sores, which may become infected. Bed bugs are not known to transmit any human pathogens but can cause emotional distress to those affected.

When associated with humans, bed bugs generally infest dwellings such as houses, hotels, dormitories, and cruise ships, but have also been known to infest places such as subways, movie theaters, nursing homes, hospitals, and planes. During the day, bed bugs hide in cracks and crevices and can be found in wall outlets, behind baseboards, wallpaper, and pictures, between bed joints and slats, along the seams of mattresses, and in bed linens. The cryptic nature of bed bugs makes them difficult to detect and locate, making control a complex and laborious process that usually consists of an integrated approach that combines insecticides with other methods.

Bed bugs are transmitted from one place to another because they hitchhike on belongings such as clothes, suitcases, second-hand beds, furniture, and bedding. Female bed bugs disperse more than any other stage, so it is likely that the bed bugs that hitchhike on peoples belongings are mostly females. Because female bed bugs can store male sperm for four to six weeks, it is also likely that they are pregnant. Therefore, a single, pregnant female that is transferred to a different location can begin a new infestation. Severe bed bug infestations tend to have a sweetish, foul odor that is caused by an oily liquid they emit.

What are Bedbugs?

They are small insects that feed on both animal blood and human blood. These insects have been around for centuries, and they are so well-adapted to feeding on human that most people may not be aware when they are being bitten. They generally feed when people are sitting calmly or sleeping, and they particularly enjoy feeding at night. Adults can survive for more than a year without feeding, which is one adaptation that has ensured survival.

During the middle of the 20th century, they were in decline in America. Perhaps this was because people were knowledgeable about their existence and frequently used pest control methods to control them. However, in the past few decades, peoples worries diminished because their rare presence in homes. In the past few years, the United States has seen a dramatic increase in the number of reports.

Today, many people are still ignorant about them. Some people believe they are immune to the problem as long as they keep a clean house. That is not true. People also generally believe they are a problem only for the lower-class. That is not true either. Any home or dwelling can become infested, regardless of how clean or tidy it is, and so that is why people should educate themselves.

They are small, only about 1/4 of an inch in length. Their color is usually reddish-brown, though they are sometimes a much lighter straw color. They are sometimes referred to as Mahogany Flats, probably because they are flat and oval-shaped. They are similar in size to an apple seed or a lady bug. Baby bugs are significantly smaller than adults, and they measure smaller than 6 mm. They are six-legged creatures, and the upper part of their bodies contains gold-colored hair. They have visible antennae and cone-like eyes.

The males have a sharp flap on the back of their bodies, while the female of the species has a body that ends in a rounded or curved segment. The upper body of both the males and females is often described as being wrinkly like crinkled paper. They emit a musty, sweet odor from glands located on their thorax.

The term given to an immature bedbug is nymph. Nymphs are small, and they shed their skins regularly before they reach adulthood. These immature bugs must eat a meal before they shed, and they shed about five times before they become mature insects.

They are not flying insects, though they are somewhat mobile. They tend to be found around places where people recline or sleep, and they generally dont venture too far away from such areas.

They generally live in small groups as opposed to nests or hives. The bugs lay eggs, and the eggs hatch into incredibly small nymphs, only about 1/16th of an inch long. The nymphs go through molten stages and grow into adult size in about 5 weeks.
