Bed bugs can turn up unexpectedly in large numbers. People are often unaware of an infestation until they recognize large, red bites on their body. Thankfully for homeowners, there is a solution that can help eliminate the bug problem. With some simple materials, you can build a trap and catch the bugs over the course of a few weeks.

Attach the fabric to the exterior of the pet dish with standard glue or duct tape. Make sure that the entire outside is covered so that no plastic is showing. For fabric, you can use old shirts.

Flip over the fabric-covered pet dish so that the hollow underside faces upward.

Dust the inside of the pet dish with talcum powder. A small paintbrush is effective for this application.

Pour dry ice cubes into the thermos. Wear gloves while handling the ice.

Seal the lid of the thermos and open the spout just a little bit.

Place the pet dish next to the infested bed and place the ice-filled thermos in the center of the dish.

How to Kill Bed Bugs | DoItYourself.com – DIY Home Improvement …

Are you bugged by bed bugs? Do you find that, after airing out your bed linens and trying all kinds of things, you still have these pests creeping over your skin? Do not despair. Following some simple methods will help you kill bed bugs once and for all. However, if the infestation is severe, consider enlisting the services of a professional exterminator.

Bed bugs can not survive in hot water. Wash everything that is infestedor that could have been infestedwith hot water. This will get rid of any minor infestations.

Thoroughly vacuum your living space. If your bed bug infestation has happened due to travel, vacuum your travel bag and everything else that you had taken on your trip. Be thorough, because hatchlings can move even through tiny stitch holes.

Place any items that can not be vacuumed or washed in hot water in direct sunlight. This will not only kill bed bugs, but will also prevent their eggs from hatching.

Sprays and other pesticides have limited impact on bed bugs. These are just a waste of money since the only pesticides that work on bed bugs are the ones that work in direct contact with them. The aerosols have little or no effect.

Buy a mattress encasement. This will form a casing around your mattress so that bugs can not get out and will starve to death. However, this will not be effective in cases of severe infestation.

The best way to get rid of bed bugs is by making use of a professional exterminator. This might be a bit more expensive than sprays and other methods, but this is the most effective method to get rid of them permanently. Exterminators would usually use steam to kill bed bugs in places that you are more likely to touch. In other places, they use steaming with chemicals to flush them out.

When choosing a professional exterminator, keep the following ideas in mind:

Approach companies that are qualified pest-control companies. There are numerous people who claim to offer new and less expensive approaches to exterminate bed bugs. However, there is no guarantee that these will work and that you will get your moneys worth. The best companies to go with would be those who are in the market for at least five years.

Ensure that the exterminators use effective bug control methods and pesticides. If heat is going to be used, remember that bugs die only when the temperature is at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Do not let pest control companies to drain your pocket and then use methods such as bug foggers or bug bombs. These do not work.

Bed bugs: Do-it-yourself control options | Insects in the City

Bed bug, Cimex lectularis

Bed bugs are one of the most difficult pest problems to eradicate quickly. By far, the best solution for bed bugs is to hire a pest control company with experience successfully controlling bed bugs. Unfortunately, this can be expensive and beyond the means of many people. If you feel you cannot afford to hire a professional, and want to attempt do-it-yourself bed bug control, there are some things you can do. With diligence and patience and some hard work you have a fighting chance of getting rid of bed bugs in your home.

If you live in an apartment or condominium, its best to alert the property manager. A coordinated bed bug control effort using a pest control company is generally needed in such situations. Bed bugs readily move from apartment to apartment, with many people unaware that they have a problem. If one apartment is infested, adjoining units (left side, right side, above and below) should be assumed to be infested unless shown otherwise through inspection or monitoring. Simply asking tenants whether they have bed bugs is not enough. In one recent study only half of residents in a large apartment with bed bugs knew (or admitted) they had a bed bug problem.

Pesticides alone are not the answer to bed bugs. Most of the commonly used pesticides today, including professional products and consumer products advertised for control of bed bugs, are at best moderately effective at controlling these pests. Pesticides must be used with care for safety and with attention to proper application to work well. Aerosol bug bombs or fumigators are also mostly ineffective in eliminating bed bugs. Aerosol insecticides mainly kill insects that are exposed, and out of their hiding places, not those hidden behind baseboards, in cracks and crevices of the bed, under carpet edging and in walls.

A bed that has been treated, encased and isolated from the rest of the room with Climbup Interceptor cups is a safe place to sleep.

Bed bugs are flattened for hiding in cracks and crevices. This bed bug was hiding along the welting on the edge of a mattress.

A last warning

Pesticides should always be used with caution, and especially when used indoors. Never use a pesticide for bed bugs that does not bear clear directions stating that it can be used indoors. Never spray yourself, children or pets with a pesticide. And follow the label safety directions carefully. Pesticide labels contain directions for use that are not merely suggestions. Failure to follow directions exactly is illegal and can result in poor control and possible harm to yourself and family. For more information, see the EPA Consumer Alert on pesticides and bed bugs.

Bed Bug Extermination – Do It Yourself Guide!

Bed bug extermination can be far from an easy task, however, if you involve pest control experts it can also be a very costly task running into thousands of dollars.

Unfortunately any household can be infested with bed bugs at any time. No one really knows what has caused the massive increase in bed bugs and it is not only people with less than clean homes who are suffering at the hands of these blood sucking beasties.

It is possible to exterminate bed bugs yourself which although it will cost you in time and patience if successful, it can save you that large wad of cash.

There are a number of methods of bed bug extermination you might want to consider but which ever you choose the first vital step is to clear and clean the infested room from top to bottom. Remove all bed linen, clothing and clutter. Wash everything possible on a hot cycle in the washing machine something like Benzarid can be added to your wash. Anything which cannot be washed can be put into a tumble dryer for ten minutes at a hot setting. One very important tip anything which you are removing from the room should be sealed in a plastic bag to prevent the spread of bed bugs throughout the house. It is also important to check in the most obscure places for example lamp shades, clocks, picture frames, even smoke alarms these pests can travel quite a distance! That done you can now decide how to tackle the bed bugs.

Order Benzarid Now

Here are your DIY bed bug extermination options:-

1.Insecticides or Pesticides. This is an option but unless you are 100% sure of how to use these chemicals safely it is not one which is advisable. These chemicals are toxic and could be very harmful to your health and anyone else living in your house including your pets. Another down side to such treatment is that bed bugs have become immune to the effects of quite a lot of these chemicals so whilst they may make you and your family ill the bed bugs may survive to suck your blood.

2.Vacuum cleaner and steam cleaner combination. This method although very laborious does work. Firstly you will have to use the vacuum cleaner on all the affected surfaces e.g. mattress, bed frame, box spring, curtains, carpets and other soft furnishings. The various tools on the vacuum cleaner are fantastic for getting into cracks and crevices. This should remove bugs, larvae and eggs. Once this is complete you can begin the whole process again with your steam cleaner. This part can take quite some time because to be truly effective the nozzle must be placed directly onto the surface and moved over it at a rate of around 30cm very 10-15 seconds. If done properly this should successfully exterminate any remaining bugs at all stages of growth.

It is worth mentioning that you will need a steam cleaning machine which can produce a high temperature and a low vapor output so that the surfaces you are treating do not end up really wet.

The big advantage with this method is that the heat will actually kill the eggs too. Insecticides cannot penetrate the outer casing which means these chemicals have to be sprayed more than once to ensure an effective bed bug extermination.

[YEA]04/06/2011: Stephanie from Toledo, Ohio: "I stayed at a hotel in New Orleans for a conference and was bitten by bed bugs all over my face, arms, legs, and chest. (We caught one and were able to take it to the front desk so it was definately bed bugs.) It took several days for the welts to appear, but when they did, they were bad. I looked on-line for 2 weeks to find help to reduce the swelling, redness, and itching. During those two weeks the bites continued to look and feel worse. I looked and felt terrible. I tried witch hazel, aloe, coconut oil, camphor, hydocortosone creme, antibiotic cream.. Nothing worked.

Someone mentioned Calamine lotion (make sure to get the one with Zinc Oxide in it) and within 24 hours of using it the swelling was gone, the redness was less than half of what it was, and it itching stopped. After 2 weeks the bites are finally healing instead of getting worse!!!! Thought I would share it here. Thank heavens we knew what happened and were able to treat our stuff with heat upon returning home so we didn't bring them home with us!!"

[YEA]05/17/2013: Tam from The Valley, Ct, Usa: "I got rid of my bed bugs fast using cat litter. One web source said to crush the crystals with a mortis and pestle, but, time must have passed and I found a brand of cat litter that has micro crystals of sylica gel at the grocery. 😀 The silica gel dries out bed bugs.

Place a container (I used the plastic ones we get when we order Chinese take out, they have a good footprint for furniture legs and are shallow, and free) under the most human/animal occupied furniture legs first. Bed bugs will die soon after they pass through the silica gel. Bed bugs can hibernate for up to 18 months, so keep the silica litter under the furniture legs for that long.

Also, that oil soap made for wood kills bed bugs on the spot. I used more than a healthy dose in several gallons of water. I have a back pack sprayer. For the wood bed frame (mattresses removed) I just sprayed away and watched them come out from every crack. After all was flooded and I saw no more movement, I used a towel on the bed frame and a mop on the wood floor. We let the frame sit for two days to dry then wrapped in saran wrap.
