Niles firefighters train to deal with bed bugs
When Niles City Fire Chief Larry Lamb went to a training conference last week, the first thing he did in his hotel room was yank the headboard off the bed to look for bed bugs.
He knows about the tiny, oval-shaped insects that prefer to hide close to where people sleep - especially in mattress crevices – because his department is taking a proactive approach to deal with them.
“One of the steps to that was to have a preventative program here in the station which basically includes detection devices on the beds so we know if we have an issue and regular treatment,” he said.
Firefighters also wash their sheets and gear more often
“We could go out three, four, five times a night going into other homes and the last thing you want is to bring one of these little guys back and have him turn into 50 little guys and 2,000 little guys eventually,” Lamb added.
Bed bugs typically infect high traffic areas such as college dorms, hospitals, nursing homes, daycares, and schools. They're also really good hitch hikers, traveling from place to place on luggage and clothes.
That’s likely how it got inside South Bend's Center for the Homeless a couple weeks ago. The center would not talk with WSBT about it on camera, but a spokeswoman said it's something they monitor regularly. She also told WSBT an exterminator took care of the problem.
“It’s a clean-up problem,” said St. Joseph County Health Officer, Dr. Thomas Felger. “Unfortunately you often have to hire it done because it's more than what people can do.”
Businesses, schools and other organizations do not have to report bed bug outbreaks because the outbreaks are not a health threat, Felger said.
“You just have to be thankful that if you make a trip somewhere you didn't pick it up because in the big city hotels it can be a real problem,” he added.
There are steps you can take to protect yourself from bed bugs when you travel. Check the cracks and crevices of the mattress for what look like little drops of blood. If you see them, the mattress may be infested.
To avoid bringing bed bugs into your home, avoid picking up furniture from the curb that people are trying to give away for free as you don’t know where those couches, mattresses and chairs have been.
But bed bugs aren't contagious – you can’t “catch” them like you can catch a cold or get the flu. But once you do get them, they can be very itchy and uncomfortable.

Epidemic?: Health Dept. steps in to help residents get rid of bed bugs
CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -
Are bed bugs a growing epidemic?
Briefings are taking place all week because the creepy crawlies are on the rise across northeast Ohio -- especially in Ward 7 in the city of Cleveland where bed bugs are taking over high rise apartments.
Jeroma Weeks let 19 Action News a look inside her security office in Rainbow Apartments. She showed us the insecticide used to kill the bed bugs that have taken over her office. She says she just killed this one this morning and has an idea of how they got here.
"I think because they put the donation in our security office. Bed bugs come from the donations," said Jeroma Weeks.
Down the hall from Jeroma the city of Cleveland and the Health Department listened to complaints from residents.
"I found them around my bed -- crawling on the blinds and stuff like that," said Alfred Brown.
The Health Department says the problem is with the residents. They say they don't get many complaints because often, residents are afraid of retaliation from their building's management.
"I'm not sure that's the case but because they believe it they don't report it," said Chantez Williams.
Rachel Mixon lives at the apartment building next door and she helped spearhead the efforts to get the city to come to the people.
"We are forcing this issue because these are our homes," said Rachel Mixon.
"I'm kind of sick of them now and I'm tired of getting bit," said Jeroma Weeks.
So if you have a problem with bed bugs and have reported it to your building manager and nothing gets done, well that's when the Health Department steps in. Officials say they will make sure the building gets checked and cleared or there could be some major fines.

Bedbugs Found At Indianapolis Children's Hospital
POSTED: 5:28 pm EST February 13, 2012
UPDATED: 5:32 pm EST February 13, 2012
INDIANAPOLIS -- An infestation of bedbugs discovered in a room at the Riley Hospital for Children has been contained, a spokeswoman for the Indiana University Health said Monday.Independent pest control contractors were called in to fumigate the room after a patient's family complained of bites on their bodies at the weekend, IU Health spokeswoman Abby Gras said. The affected room will stay sealed until the contractors have inspected it again and declared it free of bugs, she said. "This is our standard procedure, and we take the proper precautions," Gras said. She would not say which pesticides were used or which contractors applied them. She said that room is now empty and that the surrounding rooms have been inspected and declared bug-free.Bedbugs are wingless, reddish-brown insects that bite people and animals to draw blood for their meals. Their bites can cause itching and welts. While bed bugs themselves don't spread diseases, they contain an allergen that can induce asthma attacks, much like cockroaches, and in rare cases repeated bug bites can cause anemia.Experts warn that bedbugs have built up an uncannily good tolerance for pesticides and that there are always residual dangers associated with the use of such chemicals."Any time you use pesticides around people, including children, you always need a lot of caution," said Timothy Gibb, an entomologist at Purdue University. "In a hospital, you have to be more sensitive, since people in a hospital are already compromised."Gras said the pesticides were isolated to one, empty room rather than an entire hospital wing and were applied by professionals.Gibb said that since bedbugs are a relatively new threat to Indiana, hospitals haven't yet had the chance to teach their staff how to spot signs of a potential infestation, such as blood stains on bed sheets and fecal matter."It's a matter of education, making people aware and getting them on board," Gibb said.Researchers at The Ohio State University found last year that some bedbugs have a gene that breaks down most common pesticides, which they believe may be a factor in the bug's resurgence.
