A Toronto woman has nothing but sympathy for Canadian travellers who recently returned from a disastrous trip to Cuba.

Sasha Hernandez told CityNews she returned from a birthday vacation to Holguin covered in bed bug bites, and required medical attention that cost her hundreds.

Hernandez and her boyfriend took a Nolitours vacation to Blau Costa Verde beach resort earlier this month. She said bed bugs at the resort are to blame.

The couple flew Air Transat, the same airline where 14 passengers fell ill on a flight from Cuba to Toronto on Friday.

Hernandez didn’t have any problems with the flight. Her problems, she says, started at the hotel.

“On the second night I got my first few bites. I assumed they were mosquito bites [but] they swelled up and burned my skin with water bubbles surrounding the core bite which [had pus],” Hernandez wrote in an email to CityNews.

By the third day, Hernandez needed medical attention. She was charged for her gauze and Band-Aids.

The bites were so bad she couldn’t sleep at night, and she couldn’t sit in the sun during the day.

Finally, she and her boyfriend checked their beds:  Hernandez said there were around 25 dead bed bugs on her bed, and five on her boyfriend’s bed.

A maid came to change the bedding, and Hernandez went to the doctor again. She was charged for calamine lotion and an anti-histamine shot.

By the next morning, they were ready to leave. A representative from the hotel offered Hernandez a massage, which she declined because of the numerous bug bites. He then offered her a lobster dinner, which she also declined.

She and her boyfriend returned to Canada on Jan. 12. By the time the flight landed, Hernandez said, her body was so swollen she had to go the hospital immediately.

Once again, she was charged for her medication.

“A lobster is not going to cut it,” Hernandez wrote.

Hernandez said travellers to Cuba need to be extra cautious.

Another Toronto woman, Denise Robertson, says she contracted the Norwalk virus shortly after landing in Holguin Cuba recently.

"It just came on very quickly, vomiting really badly, diarrhea, fever, and they asked me if I would stay in my room and be quarantined so no one else got it," she said.

Despite the bad press, travel expert Robert Townshend doesn't think tourists will stop vacationing in Cuba.

"It seems that the deals and the prices you get to go to Cuba, outweighs the chance of any kind of illness you could get," he said.

Grandmother loses her Green Bay Packers possessions to bed bugs WITH VIDEO

Although Jeanette Skenandore, 83, lives in “Lions territory,” she still proclaims she is a fan of the Green Bay Packers — last year’s Super Bowl winner.

Skenandore lost almost all of the Green Bay memorabilia she collected during 20 years when her Auburn Hills apartment became infested with bed bugs.

The bed bugs embedded into her $800 Green Bay chair, couch, sheets, comforter, pillows, rug and almost every other area of her home.

She was forced to move out of the apartment into her daughter Marion Morway’s Pontiac home. 

Bed bugs are parasites that feed on humans, and after biting a human once, they can live up to 18 months without feeding.

With tears in her eyes, Skenandore, a mother of 10 children, grandmother of 19, great-grandmother of 23 and great-great grandmother of one, described when she realized her possessions were gone.

“I was in the hospital getting my pacemaker put in. When I came home, my daughter stopped me at my apartment and said, ‘Mom, I have to tell you something. Don’t sit down.’ And I asked why? She told me I had bed bugs. My granddaughters found it when they went to clean up my apartment,” said Skenandore. “I’d never seen them before in my life. I took my dark green sheets off, and these yellow things are running around.”

Pontiac resident Evelyn Williams, a nurse who works in home care service for Meadow Creek Village Apartments, and Skenandore’s daughter Marion Morway are working to replenish Skenandore’s collection and send Skenandore to a Packers game to meet the players, her biggest dream before she dies. But they need the community’s help.

Morway said she hopes something can be done before God takes her mom home. Skenandore has been in and out of the hospital. The last time she was in the hospital was two weeks ago, which Williams joked was because the Packers were ousted from the playoffs.

Morway said, “She had a really, really bad cold she couldn’t get rid of. Her blood pressure was down, and her sugar was down.” Her body temperature dramatically dropped. Continued...

Williams said Skenandore has had a hard life, losing her daughter at six to leukemia, and these recent events have only made her more depressed. “We just wanted to do something to make her smile,” said Williams. “I don’t want anything to happen to her.”

Williams’ husband Monte joked, “She adopted the players as her children. When they lose, she has a fit.

“Her apartment was a shrine. There wasn’t anything that didn’t have Green Bay on it except for her food. The reason why we’re so gung ho with this is because she’s in her 80s now. She’s still cheering like she’s 18. I’ve never seen a person like this before.”

Skenandore became a hard-core Packers fan after she lived in Wisconsin from 1959 to 1972. Her favorite players are former quarterback Brett Favre and current linebacker Clay Matthews.

After Packers’ Director of Public Affairs Aaron Popkey heard about Skenandore’s story, he said, “It’s very heartening to the Packers to have support for the team from all over the country.”

“Our fans often describe the team as America’s team, and we’re the only team that is owned by the fans. We’re owned by our shareholders, and we’re in the middle of our fifth stock offering, instead of being owned by an owner. The Lions, for instance, are owned by (William Clay) Ford … I think a lot of people identify fondly with the notion of having a team that doesn’t have an owner,” he said.

Popkey encouraged Skenandore’s family and friends to send letters to the community outreach department with their request, telling her story, so the department can “recognize a special fan.”

Skenandore said she wants the Packers to know how big of a fan she is.

“Could they send this old lady some tickets?”

Blog helps students make informed housing decisions

West Virginia University graduate student Leann Ray is using her thesis project as an opportunity to help students make informed off-campus housing decisions.

Ray, a journalism student, has created a blog that serves as an investigative look at off-campus student housing – specifically in the Sunnyside area.

"Off-campus housing always seems to be an issue. The conditions aren't that great – they're sometimes even dangerous – and students aren't aware that the University has an off-campus housing department and legal services to help them with landlord issues," Ray said. "The purpose of my blog is to look at the issues here and see how they're being handled. I'm also looking at what's going on in other states to see what's done differently or possibly even done better."

The blog provides students with information about local helpful resources, dissects Morgantown codes and laws, and rates apartments based on aspects such as safety, parking and maintenance.

Ray said she hopes the blog can serve as an interactive database when students set out to look for the right apartment and help them feel more confident when making decisions.

"I really want the blog to be a place where students can have a conversation about off-campus housing problems. A lot of times students don't have a voice and feel like there's nothing they can do when it comes to their landlords," she said.

So far, Ray has learned more about housing problems she didn't realize were major local issues, such as mold and bed bugs.

Ray found local reports on an online bed bug registry and discovered four hotels in Morgantown have had bedbugs in the past six months.

"I had never heard of that in town. I didn't know mold or bed bugs were real problems here until I began this research," she said.

While warmer states have laws that monitor mold growth in houses, West Virginia currently has no legislation against it, Ray said.

"Mold could make you sick, and the landlords don't really have to fix it. Students may have to move out because they're sick but still have to pay rent," Ray said. "I'm hoping this blog is something students will be able to use to learn about issues like these and know what they need to look out for when searching for a place to live."

Ray said she also hopes to highlight local organizations that are working to make a difference in safe housing with her blog, too, like the Sunnyside Up Project – a collaborative partnership between the city of Morgantown and WVU that's working to develop and implement a revitalization plan for the neighborhood.

"Students have heard about Sunnyside Up but don't really know what they do. They go around and clean up sidewalks, cut trees so you don't have to duck, paint dumpsters and even help give money to fix up houses that need it," Ray said. "I'm hoping to really get the word out there about great organizations like this one."

Ray said she encourages feedback from students, in addition to permanent local residents, about their experiences living in the area in order to provide readers with a consistently updated database of information.

"Readers are welcome to leave comments on the blog or email me if they are having problems, and it could end up turning into a story idea that I cover. I want to get the students' voice represented, just as I want to hear from landlords, Code Enforcement and the University," she said. "Information concerning tenant rights is something anyone can use – not just students."

Ray hopes the accessible medium of her project will make it quick and easy for students who find themselves in a bind when looking for a future home.

"Most students don't subscribe to newspapers. Since it's about something that affects everyone, I wanted it to actually be accessible to students and help them out as much as possible," she said.
