Sioux Falls raising awareness to bed bugs

Good night, sleep tight, and don't let the bed bugs bite. The well-known nursery rhyme is more of a reality than you might think or hope. On Thursday the Sioux Falls Health Department held a bed bug panel to raise awareness about the pests.

If your skin isn't crawling yet it will be soon. You also may want to double check your bed sheets tonight. Bed bugs are on the rise across the country, South Dakota is no exception.

"We have seen a steady increase of bed bug samples being sent in to our clinic." Said Buyung Hadi, an entomologist with SDSU.

In the pastfour months theSDSU entomology clinic has identifiedfive bed bug samples. A yearly total of three is considered abnormally high.

"Our message today would be for tenants to talk with landlords, heyI got a problem here can you take a look." Said Kevin Smith, director of building services for Sioux Falls.

Afew Sioux Falls hotels and apartments have seen bed bug cases and the city health department wants people to be aware.

Tim Nicolai was just one of the landlord's who stopped by for more information on the pests.

"The main reasonI came down today is to see what our next step is in controlling the issue we have before it gets out of hand in Sioux Falls." Said Nicolai.

The health department says the first step is finding them.

"The bed bugs themselves will congregate in areas close to their host, which is mainly a bed, you're stationary, not moving, you're easy to get to and they have nice little corners and tucks in your mattress where they can hide." Saidhealth program director Denise Patton.

Letter: Come see for yourself

Martha Mador, Bonita Springs

Come see for yourself

Here's a suggestion for letter-writer Lloyd Zimmerman, who expressed legitimate concerns on May 5 about the conditions found in overcrowded homeless shelters (not pretty).

Gather a group of friends and neighbors and call to make a reservation at St. Matthew's House for a tour of the facilities in East Naples.

Bring a donation of personal goods like razor blades, deodorants and tooth brushes.

Tell them you would like to stay for lunch (suggested donation $10).

The tour guide will address all your concerns; he has read the same article you quoted in your letter. He will even discuss the "bed bug" issue you mentioned. The St. Matthew's House resolution to that issue is the envy of the hotel industry.

My guess is that your opinion will not change on what a community should do about housing the homeless. But it will be an informed opinion and perhaps St. Matthew's House will make a few bucks in the process and add a few items to its storage cabinet.

"Green" Way to Get Rid of Pesky Brown Bugs

It's a "green' way to get rid of some pesky brown bugs.

Pest exterminators in Minot have said that bed bugs are on the rise across North Dakota.

Therma Pure Heat is afairly new technology to the Dakotas.

The patented idea of structural pasteurization uses heat instead of chemicals to kill off bugs and bacteria.

"We're seeing a proliferation of bed bugs now, throughout the United States, some cities have declared emergencies now because of this bed bug problem and if we don't have bedbugs here, we're soon to see them, and so this is a very valuable technology, CDC has spoken very highly about use of Heat now to kill these insects, rather than waiting often weeks with chemicals, the technology can be used in a day." says David Hedman/Therma Pure Heat President/CEO.

He says the Therma Pure Heat product can also be used in flooded structures to dry out the home and kill any mold.

Councillor seeks to restore program cuts with new-found surplus

KELLY GRANT City hall bureau chief Globe and Mail Update Published Monday, May. 07, 2012 4:59PM EDT Last updated Monday, May. 07, 2012 5:29PM EDT

Toronto council appears poised to undo the last of its controversial 2012 spending cuts, despite the budget committees opposition to temporarily restoring funding to the High Park Zoo, Far Enough Farm and a hardship fund for the citys neediest.

Theres going to be a floor fight on council on this item, Councillor James Pasternak said. Were going to move it straight up there and that way all 44 councillors and the mayor have a say in whats important to Torontonians. I think the most important thing is we have to cut through a lot of the histrionics of financial despair that were plaguing the budgetary process into the fall and early 2012.

The North York councillor and newest member of the budget committee on Monday proposed using more than $1.7-million of the $292-million 2011 surplus as a short-term rescue fund for a slew of programs left on life support after the January budget vote.

He also moved a motion asking that $258,000 of the solid waste departments $37-million 2011 surplus be dedicated to waiving a contentious new waste fee for charities.

The budget committee rejected Mr. Pasternaks proposals, most by votes of 3-2, with Councillors Peter Milczyn, John Parker and Doug Ford voting against, and Chin Lee voting with Mr. Pasternak.

The committee endorsed a separate motion from Mr. Lee allocating $180,000 of the surplus to extreme cleaning for bed bugs, provided the province kicks in $500,000 in 2012 for bed bug eradication.

Despite the thumbs down at budget committee, council will have a final say in June.

Budget Chief Mike Del Grande said he was frustrated a member of his own budget committee tried to revisit the 2012 budget months after it was settled.

My feeling is the budget is the budget. You cant keep re-opening it. Its closed.

FOX19 Investigates: Secret bed bug dangers

CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

Despite their best efforts, some people in Cincinnati are bringing home bed bugs in some creepy and unexpected ways, FOX19 News has learned.

Over the past month, we have been talking with bed bug experts, business owners --- and you --- about what you're seeing.

What may get you scratching involuntarily are the stories about the places you'd never expect to catch bed bugs.

FOX19 viewer Kevin, writing on the station's Facebook page, says he got them after renting a moving truck.

"It's the only place that it could have been," he said, "as the place I moved from did not have them and my new home did not have them to start."

We've heard similar stories, too. The problem is some rental companies don't properly inspect or clean their trucks after a family has turned-in the one they rented. So if they had bed bugs they're passed along to the next family that rents the truck.

FOX19 visited a large moving company in our area to see how their employees try to prevent carrying bed bugs from house to house. You'll see that part of the story Wednesday night at 10 o'clock.

We'll also meet a man who got bed bugs after hip replacement surgery. One of the medical devices he rented was infested with them. He has pictures of the bite marks to prove it.

Tune in Wednesday night at 10:00 p.m. to FOX19.
