Adult female bed bug (enlarged).

Bed bugs are one of the most prevalent species of insect in the U.S. Based on the latestBugs Without Borders Survey, conducted by the National Pest Management Association and the University of Kentucky, 99.6% of pest control professionals stated that they had come across a bed bug infestation in the last year.

This is why bed bug pest control is so vital. It is often difficult to determine whether you actually have an infestation but some of the warning signs are:

Adult male bed bug (enlarged).

Bed bug bites are usually the early warning sign of a bed bug infestation. Bed bugs feed only on blood. Each life stage feeds, except the egg.

Allergic reactions vary widely from practically no reaction to small itchy red or white bumps, to blisters or pustules. Not every person in a residence will react the same way and many times only one person will show signs of bites, leading others to believe it cannot be bed bugs. If you someone you now has bites, consider the following:

If left untreated, bed bug infestations will just get worse. Bed bugs will travel on clothing or personal items, so if you do not treat your home and remove the infestation, you may cause the spread of these annoying bugs.

Bed Bug Plague – Bed Bugs Are Back

Despite the name, bed bugs are known to infest much more than the bedroom. In fact, one blogger recently discovered the pests at her expensive fitness facility in Chicago.

A Girl and A Guy blogger, Angel, summed up the bed bug discovery with two hashtags: #DOOM #FAIL. Angel nearly ended her membership at the facility, but the staff was quick to exterminate and fix the problem. She plans to continue her membership but suggests keeping these tips in mind before hitting the gym:

- If using a public gym, bring a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol to spray lockers and machines before use;

- If you suspect your gym has bed bugs, inform the operations manager and share your concerns; and

- If you believe there are bed bugs in your home, hire a professional pest control agent.

You can view Angels full list of tips online. For some extra protection against these pests, download Protect-A-Beds Bed Bugs 101 mobile app, which helps you prevent, identify and locate bed bugs before they sneak into your belongings.

K9 Scent Detection Hawaii | Hawaii Bed Bug Inspections

Bed Bug Detection Services ForHawaii

For years, humans have used canines to find things that they cannot find on their own: missing children, narcotics, weapons, criminals; the list goes on and on. With over 220 million olfactory receptors, dogs have the uncanny ability to detect the virtually undetectable. At K9 Scent Detection Hawaii, we utilize our furry friends to detect none other than our bed bug nemeses.

In a canine inspection, our canine team will visit your facility and quickly and accurately detect the presence or absence of bed bugs, today's most notorious biting pest. The process is much quicker and less invasive than a human inspection and will leave you with the peace of mind you need after a bed bug scare.

We can use canines to accurately detect the presence of low level bed bug infestations; as little as one live bed bug or one live egg. In addition, we can use this technique to confirm the absence of bed bugs! Our canine are over 97% effective in detecting bed bugs: that's compared to a human's inspection ability, which is a measly 30% even on our best days! In addition, a human may have to tear the room apart in order to detect a low level infestation (if he/she can even find it at all!).

At K9 Scent Detection Hawaii, we know that bed bugs are a sensitive issue, one people dont want to think about and cant seem to talk about. Because of this, we operate very discretely. Our uniforms are a simple polo and pants, nothing that mentions bed bugs or pest control. Our company vehicles are also discrete. We are used to avoiding questions from the public about what we are looking for. Finally, we chose the perfect canines for this sensitive business, where our clientele includes some of the highest rated resorts on the island. Scout and Ally are highly trained working dogs. They were selected above all other canine candidates for several reasons. Obviously, they are highly intelligent and driven dogs, but that was not the only reason. They are friendly, quiet and well behaved too. Beagles are often notorious for being loud and a bundle of energy, but Scout and Ally have been well trained to not bark, are calm, and most importantly, very friendly. In addition, Scout and Ally are smaller dogs, under 20 lbs. This means they can get around more places than bigger dogs, are generally less intimidating for people who arent comfortable with dogs, and are more discrete in sensitive situations than larger dogs and they even ride around in strollers! Finally, Scout and Ally do not leave a lot of hair behind. They dont shed much and are brushed before work to catch any loose hairs that may be ready to come off. Because of these reasons, Scout and Ally often are unseen, or under the radar in many of our sensitive accounts.

Our K9 teams are certified by National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association (NESDCA) and re-certify every year. NESDCA is an independent, non-bias, third party certifying organization. This organization exists solely to certify that K9 teams are on tracks and working how they claim to work. Re-certification is necessary every year and requires master trainers to come to us in Hawaii in order to test our canines and handlers. In addition, our dogs are trained every day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Our canines stay with our K9 department manager, which means even on holidays and weekends our canines are detecting bed bugs!

These are some of the most common questions we get. If you have another, call us! (808) 456-7716. Our Bug Expert can also answer your questions online!

It is not known for certain, but it is highly likely that it is a pheromone or a similar chemical signature that live bed bugs give off so they can communicate with each other.

Yes. In order to be NESDCA certified, your dog may only detect ONE thing: bed bugs OR termites OR whatever pest he/she is trained for. This is because if your dog alerts on both, you may not know what you are dealing with. For instance, if your dog is trained to alert for termites and bed bugs, and he alerts on a baseboard, you do not know if the baseboard has termites, bed bugs, or BOTH! Furthermore, research shows that when a dog is cross trained to detect more than one odor his/her accuracy to detect the target best is greatly decreased. Therefore, Scout and Ally ONLY detect LIVE bed bugs and viable eggs.

Because dead bugs dont bite! Oftentimes bed bugs die in wall voids, in mattresses and in other areas where you would be unable to clean them up. If that happens, you will never be able to use the canine to confirm that all the bed bugs are gone!

In research performed by the University of Florida, NESDCA-certified canines averaged a 98% accuracy rate in detecting the odor of live bed bugs and viable eggs in a controlled hotel room experiment. Human visual inspections are estimated to be only 17 to 30% accurate.

Bed bugs can hide under carpets, in baseboards, inside mattresses and box springs, in electronics, and behind walls--areas that are virtually impossible for a human to inspect without dismantling the room's contents.

We'll save you time and money!

Our canine teams can search an average-sized room in just two to three minutes without damage to furnishings or disruption. Since areas of possible infestation can be pinpointed, this can eliminate the need to treat the entire premises.

Follow-up inspections can verify if treatment was successful!

Pesticide applications are rarely 100% effective after the first application. Since our canines are trained to detect only the odor of live bed bugs, the remains of a previous infestation (old evidence) will not cause our dogs to falsely alert.

Let K9 Scent Detection partner with you to protect your reputation!

We can also work with your current pest management company to increase detection accuracy. Our canine team can detect the presence of the odor of even a single bed bug. Remember, early detection is essential!
