Bedbugs are prolific creatures! Bed bug females can lay up to 5 eggs each day, and up to 500 in a lifetime. Bed bugs must feed on blood in order to complete the breeding process, this makes humans a prime source of food for bedbugs. Dont delay. Report a bed bug infestation in your neighborhood as soon as you become aware of it, and protect your family and friends!

We all have to play a role if we are going to win the battle against bed bugs. Reporting assists the city with gathering statistics. They can then make comparisons to other cities and previous years and months. It can support cities in making certain monetary decisions regarding aid for bed bug infested areas and public housing and budget allocation.

Ontario /ntri.o/ is a Province of Canada located in the east-central part of Canada, the largest by population and second largest, after Quebec, in total area, (Nunavut and the Northwest Territories are larger in area, but they are not provinces.) The province's largest metropolitan area and Canada's most populous city, Toronto, is the capital city of Ontario. The national capital of Canada, Ottawa, is located in Ontario as well.

Ontario is bordered by Manitoba on its west, Hudson Bay on its north, and Quebec on its east, and by three states of the United States to its south (from west to east): Minnesota, Michigan, and New York. Ohio and Pennsylvania are across Lake Erie. All but a small portion of Ontario's 2,700km (1,677mi) border with the United States follow inland waterways: from the west at Lake of the Woods, eastward along the major rivers and lakes of the Great Lakes/St. Lawrence River drainage system. These are the Rainy River, Lake Superior, the St. Mary's River, Lake Huron, the St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, the Niagara River, Lake Ontario, and along the St. Lawrence River from Kingston, Ontario to the Quebec boundary just east of Cornwall, Ontario.

Ontario is sometimes broken into two regions, Northern Ontario and Southern Ontario. The province is named after Lake Ontario, which is thought to have been derived from Ontar:io, a Huron (Wyandot) word meaning "great lake", or possibly skanadario which means "beautiful water" in the Iroquoian languages. Ontario contains about 250,000 freshwater lakes.

The province consists of three main geographical regions:

Despite the absence of any mountainous terrain in the province, there are large areas of uplands, particularly within the Canadian Shield which traverses the province from northwest to southeast and also above the Niagara Escarpment which crosses the south. The Saint Lawrence Seaway allows navigation to and from the Atlantic Ocean as far inland as Thunder Bay in Northwestern Ontario. Northern Ontario occupies roughly 87% of the surface area of the province; conversely Southern Ontario contains 94% of the population.

Point Pelee is a peninsula of Lake Erie in southwestern Ontario (near Windsor and Detroit, Michigan) that is the southernmost extent of Canada's mainland. Pelee Island and Middle Island in Lake Erie extend slightly farther. All are south of 42N slightly farther south than the northern border of California.

Ontario has three main climatic regions. Parts of Southwestern Ontario have a moderate humid continental climate (Kppen climate classification Dfa), similar to that of the inland Mid-Atlantic States and the Great Lakes portion of the Midwestern United States. The region has warm, humid summers and cold winters. Annual precipitation ranges from 75100 cm (3039 in) and is well distributed throughout the year with a usual summer peak. Most of this region lies in the lee of the Great Lakes making for abundant snow in some areas. Point Pelee and Middle Island, the southernmost parts of the country, are at the dividing line of a humid continental climate and a humid subtropical climate (Dfa/Cfa).

What Do Bed Bugs Looks Like"?

Bed bug eggs may look like a clear piece of rice and are often stuck to materials where the bed bugs nest or congregate. Though not social bugs they do tend to sit next to each other. Once bed bugs hatch they go thru different stages and will look different in each stage. The first stage Nymph 1 they are newly hatched and almost translucent or clear looking unless they have just fed and then they are more red. After their first blood feed they will molt (shed their exoskeleton) they will grow and become darker after each Nymph stage until they reach their Adult Stage. In optimal conditions they may reach the adult stage in four or five months. Adults are still small- about the size of an apple seed and vary from brown to reddish brown in color. Try to collect one without smashing it so it can be identified. Your local extension office will be able to identify the bug for you at little to no cost. If the bug does gets smashed did a blob of blood squirt out? Does it have six legs? In addition, bed bugs cannot fly and have no real wings. If you can see wings you are not looking at a bedbug.

It shows the bugs as they look when they are hungry and not full of blood. The bottom Horizontal pictures show how the bugs change color (especially nymph) and how they elongate with blood. Once the blood has been absorbed they will no longer be elongated and will shrink back down.

Is it a flea? Is it a bed bug? No, its a carpet beetle!

In todays world, were all a little paranoid when it comes to anything with more than four legs. For some of us, insects have always been gross. For others, the modern-day outbreak of bed bugs has us constantly on alert. Either way, its important to be able to distinguish between OH MY GOSH WE HAVE BED BUGS and other insects that are definitely a nuisance, but not the alarm-raising infestation you suspect it may be. In the Portland and Seattle area, organic pest control technicians often encounter two other types of insects that are thought to be bed bugs.

Commonly, flea bites and occasionally fleas are mistaken for their much more prolific and costly relatives, the bed bug. Fleas are not capable of living off humans alone, but can create a problem in a home for a period of six months or more once the pet has been removed and/or treated. This is because fleas often remain in undeveloped stages in the carpet, and only progress to adult stage once direct pressure, carbon dioxide and/or heat have activated them. There are green methods of pest control for managing fleas, and our technicians, trained in organic pest control, will be able to provide details on those.

In the Seattle and Oregon area, we are also getting calls regarding carpet beetles. Carpet beetles are a part of the Dermestid family, and we see a few different types. We often find the varied carpet beetle, the black carpet beetle, and the furniture carpet beetle infesting homes. They all eat the same class of things organic materials such as natural fibers (cotton, wool), fur, hair, skin, food, et cetera. Their eating habits often explain some of the confusion because their larvae consume our dead skin, we often find them in or around our mattresses.

More importantly, it isnt the adult beetle that causes alarm. The larvae are small and reddish brown, with hairs protruding from their exoskeleton. Once the skin is cast off from the insect, it can often be confused with a bed bug casting. The hairs can cause irritation of the skin, creating something like a rash. This rash, along with the castings, is the most common reason people assume they have a bed bug infestation rather than a carpet beetle infestation.

The good news is that bed bugs spread like wildfire, while carpet beetles can be easily managed with green pest control techniques. When our office is notified of problems with bedbugs in an apartment complex, hotel, or motel, an inspector is sent to the location to determine the complaints validity and to assist the owners of the property in taking the appropriate action to rid the facilities of this pest.

Private owners and renters of single family dwellings can contact our office for information in regards to elimination of bedbugs, but our inspectors will not visit these locations to determine if bedbugs exist in the home.

It is important to remember that no transmission of human disease has been linked to bedbugs and as such are not technically a public health hazard; they are a nuisance pest only.
