Bed bugs found in the Cuyahoga County Justice Center …

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- As if just being in court isn't already enough to make you squirm.

Bed bugs have been discovered in the Cuyahoga County Justice Center, Common Pleas Court officials said in a news release Monday evening. The justice center houses numerous government offices including the Common Pleas Court, the county jail, the county and city clerk of courts, County Council chambers and others.

The areas in question have been treated and workers were advised of the discovery and provided with instruction on the prevention and treatment of bed bugs, according to court officials. Court officials also brought in "bed bug experts" Monday afternoon in a meeting that was open to any interested personnel, according to the news release.

"Unfortunately, no office is totally safe from the potential for bed bugs or any other pests," read the statement, issued by Common Pleas Court spokesman Darren Toms.

The bed bugs found in the building were not an "infestation" -- rather, they were isolated incidents, according to the court.

The Justice Center isn't the only county building where bed bugs have been discovered recently. In early December, a few bed bugs were discovered in the Whitlatch Building, 1910 Carnegie Ave., which is the temporary home of the Board of Revisions, among other county services.

In that case also, the bed bugs were found to be temporary guests and not permanent residents, according to county officials.

What are bed bugs? – Texas Department of State Health …

Bed bugs are small, wingless insects that have not been known to transmit disease. Adult bed bugs have flat, oval shaped bodies. They are between 1 to 7 millimeters in length (about the size of an apple seed). The size of an adult bed bug varies, because their bodies become larger after a blood meal. After eating they change to a reddish color. Bed bugs are usually active at night and bite humans and animals while they are sleeping. They can live several months without feeding.

Bed bugs can be found anywhere, such as houses, apartments, group living situations, hospitals, hotels/motels, and public transportation vehicles. These places have areas where people sleep or spend significant amounts of time. Their usual hiding places are in seams of mattresses, box springs, bed frames, and along and/or directly behind headboards. Once a bed bug population multiplies, they can be found: behind baseboards; in cracks and crevices in furniture, floors, or walls; under cluttered areas; and in electronic appliances. A bed bug infestation is apparent by noticing black or brown spots (which are their waste products) on surfaces. The eggs, egg shells, and exoskeletons of the bed bugs can be found in their hiding places as well.

Because bed bugs can be found in homes and a variety of public places, they can easily be transported from place to place by people. They can hide in the seams of luggage and in the folds of clothing. They can also be transported in furniture.

Bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, but many people have mild to severe allergic reactions to the bites. Bed bug bite marks usually appear on the face, neck, arms, hands, but can appear on other body parts. The marks are slightly swollen, red areas that can itch or be irritating.

It usually takes multiple visits by licensed pest control operator who has experience in elimination of bed bugs. Please seek the advice of a licensed pest control operator for treatment options. Over the counter foggers and pesticides will not eliminate bed bugs.

Bed Bugs Control in New York

The Big Apple is getting infested! There are bed bugs in New York and there are taking over. Get the facts on these nocturnal pests and how one can get rid of them quickly and permanently.

"Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite?"

It's no joke; millions of people living in New York and its surrounding cities aren't sleeping tight because bed bugs are biting. These seed-size insects are feasting on the blood of helpless sleepers and infesting hotels, offices, luxury condos to dilapidated, multi-family homes, from public schools to theaters to department stores.

Bed Bug Facts

Once believed to be eradicated in the United States during the 1950s, bed bugs are making a big comeback in many states, including New York City. Entomologists say the pests are reappearing due to an increases in international travel and the ban on certain bug pesticides, like DDT, that were once used to treat bed bugs.

Flat, reddish-brown and wingless, the common bed bugs tend to hide in mattress where their victims sleep and are attracted to carbon dioxide and body heat. Though they are are not strictly nocturnal, they are most active at night which explains why they attack when most of the victims are sleeping.

While bed bug bitescan cause redness, itching and allergic reactions in some people, however according to Mayo Clinic, there are no evidence to suggest that bed bugs transmit disease.

Evidences also suggest that the typical life span of a bed bug is about 12 to 18 months and they are able to live for several months without feeding on a host.

Bed Bug Statistics in New York

According to a new 2012report in PR Newswire, New York City has been named the third most bed bug infested cities in the United States.

Northeast Portland school battling bed bugs

PORTLAND -- A Northeast Portland High School has been dealing with a creepy problem: bed bugs.

"We were all squeamish and 'Eww,'" said Christina Rilatt, secretary at Alliance High, Meek campus, on Northeast Alberta Court.

According to district officials, an English teacher discovered the first bed bug in his classroom last week. Instead of throwing it away, he put the bed bug in a container and showed it to pest control.

Without that positive identification, we wouldnt have able to treat the problem so quickly, said Portland Public Schools spokeswoman Christine Miles.

On Thursday, the district brought in a "bed bug-sniffing dog," to sniff the entire school. The dog discovered traces of bed bugs in seven lockers, a classroom and pile of clothes that had been donated.

"All of those things were steam-cleaned," said Miles. She said this was the first time the district had ever dealt with bed bugs at any of its schools.

Miles said district officials werent sure where the bed bugs came from. They believed they have solved the problem, but to make sure, they planned to bring back the bed bug-sniffing dog in a couple weeks.
