Pest Control Alerts | Which one of these is the bed bug?

The bed bug is the one in the middle!

Bed bug Gary Alpert, Harvard University, Bugwood.org

Bed bugs are an ever growing problem in the US. As bed bugs problems began increasing in Georgia, the Georgia Department of Public Health put together a bed bug handbook, providing information about the habits and habitats of the bed bug with an emphasis on information required by environmental health specialists dealing with infestations in hotels.

Recently, as bed bug problems continue to spread to homes, apartments, shelters, schools, dorms, and other places where people live, work, and study; it was decided to update and expand the bed bug handbook to include information on dealing with bed bugs in a wider variety of circumstances.

The revised handbook is posted on the GDPH website .

One reason to update the handbook was to make it useful for people outside of public health who are dealing with bed bug issues. Any comments or suggestions would be gratefully accepted. Please send comments to Dr. Rosmarie Kelly

Scientists worry bed bugs could spread Chagas disease

PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- Bed bugs are every urbanite's worst nightmare, but from a public health perspective, they're considered rather harmless. Unlike rats or mosquitos, there's no evidence they carry or spread deadly diseases like malaria, yellow fever or dengue. But new research suggests the night-time bloodsucker can transmit the parasite that causes Chagas, a disease endemic to South America.

Chagas disease was thought to be spread only by kissing bugs, another variety of bloodsuckers that typically feed on the faces of sleeping mammals. The disease is caused by a parasite called Trypanosoma cruzi; it's not transmitted by the bite itself but through feces deposited while the kissing bug feeds.

If the parasite can find its way in through the bite would, it can attack the victim's organs and has been specifically implicated in heart complications in humans. Its ill effects often don't appear for 20 years after the infection, making the disease hard to track and treat. The malady kills 50,000 a year, mostly in Central and South America, but doctors have found an increasing number of cases in Texas.

Now, experiments by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine and Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Peru prove that Trypanosoma cruzi can live and travel inside a bedbug, too.

As detailed in a new paper -- published this week in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene -- the research proved bed bugs were able to contract the parasite while feeding on diseased mice, as well as deposit the parasite on healthy mice.

There's no evidence bed bugs are carrying Chagas yet, but if they could, researchers said it could be a disastrous scenario.

"Any time you have an infectious disease and identify a new route of infection, that's something to be concerned about," Rick Tarleton, a Chagas expert at the University of Georgia who wasn't involved in the study, told Newsweek.

"There have always been triatomine bugs and cases of Chagas disease in the U.S., but the kissing bugs we have here don't come into homes frequently like the more dangerous species in South and Central America do," senior study author Michael Z. Levy said in a press release. "I am much more concerned about the role of bed bugs. They are already here -- in our homes, in our beds and in high numbers. What we found has thrown a wrench in the way I think about transmission, and where Chagas disease could emerge next."

KCK assisted living facility battling bed bugs – KCTV5

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

A KCK assisted living facility is battling a case of bed bugs.

The Net Giver operates Delaware Highlands Assisted Living, located at North 126th Street and Delaware Parkway, which is a publicly subsidized facility.

The owner of the Net Giver, Jeremy Whitt, says the staff has found bed bugs in three of the residents' rooms, beginning with one room two weeks ago.

"It all depends on the level of severity,"Whitt said about deciding how to handle the situation. "This was a minor incident, and that's not our opinion, but the opinion of (the exterminator) Orkin."

Whitt says the management had Orkin fumigate only the affected room when that first sighting arose. They told maintenance and cleaning staff to keep an eye out but did not inspect other rooms or notify other residents.

"We didn't want to create mass hysteria or confusion with partial information or incomplete information, especially on the first round of this incident," Whitt said.

By Friday staff noticed signs of bedbugs in two adjacent rooms and management stepped up its response, Whitt said.

Monday, Orkin fumigated not just those rooms, but two rooms in every direction on that floor as well as the rooms above and below. Then they began planning how best to inform the rest of the people who live there.

"I didn't know what a bed big looked like so I was kind of curious, said resident Jackie Faught.
