New councillor calls for repeal of DDT ban to fight bed bugs

A new Hamilton city councillor says he wants to ask the province to allow the use ofbanned chemicals including DDT to help rid the city of its bed bug epidemic.

Matthew Green, who was elected in October to represent Ward 3, says he wants the province to take a closer look at repealing the 40-year banon DDT, or other powerful chemicals on a limited basis if they'll help eradicate bed bugs in Hamilton.

Drastic measures are required, he said. While campaigning, he saw multi-unit buildingswhere upwards of 70 per cent of residents had suffered from bed bugs. Some of them were CityHousing Hamilton buildings.

I need to take a closer look at the science, but there are chemical solutions and Id like to revisit that, he said. Itd have to be evidence based.

The scientificevidence may be against such an idea, at least for DDT. Canada banned the chemical in 1972 because of its impact on humans and wildlife.

DDT was a common pesticide but had a particularlydamaging effect on birds, causing a thinning of the eggshells and damaging their reproductive abilities. Populations of Peregrine Falcons, eagles and other birds were harmed by the chemical. It's impact on bird populations was chronicled in Rachel Carson's classic book, Silent Spring.

On its website, the federal government lists it as moderately toxic to humans, with low-to-moderate level impacts including nausea, diarrhea and eye irritation. Human deaths from exposure to DDT are rare.

The idea of using DDT for bed bugs is a probably non-starter, said Chris Darling, a senior curator of entomology at the Royal Ontario Museum. I dont think thats going anywhere.

Green knows that some of these chemicals have potential health impacts. Butthe mass scale of bed bug infestations are causing health impacts too, he said.

Its drastic and its something were going to have to look at.

A brother of a man who died while living in a home run by People Helping People, a neighbour who gave food to residents of another home, and a workergive an inside look at the organization under scrutiny after a fire Monday that led to a mans death.

-

Kevin McNamee died alone, in a basement room on Fleming Dr. in Londons east end.

The 51-year-old had been in that locked room alone for about three days by the time another resident, who like Kevin had mental health issues, knocked down the door and found him Oct. 22, 2012.

Im horrified. I trusted (the organization) with my brother. Its been a big loss to me, said Robert McNamee, Kevins brother.

The organization caring for Kevin was People Helping People, now under public scrutiny after a fire Monday that killed a man in an apartment building on Oxford St. E.

The organization is run by Keith Charles, who says he is a former drug addict who started People Helping People about six years ago after noticing those with addictions and mental health issues had nowhere to go after being discharged from hospital.

The McNamees story is just one that The Free Press has heard since the Monday blaze, raising questions about the need for better housing for the mentally ill, and better oversight at unregulated homes that promise hot meals, help with taking medication and round-the-clock supervision.

Reached Thursday night, Charles said he remembers Kevin but could not answer any questions because he was standing in the rain and he needed to help residents of the burned-out Oxford St. building.

When Kevin was discharged from Regional Mental Health London in August 2011, he had nowhere to go, his brother said. When Charles approached the brothers in the hallway of the hospital about a place to live with hot food and supervision thrown in, Robert McNamee said he was thrilled.

The Allegany County Public School System recently responded to instances of bed bugs and head lice in schools.

The staff is trained to follow procedures outlined in an integrated pest management policy in school buildings and on school grounds.

In recent years, bed bugs have been more prevalent because certain pesticides have been banned due to their negative environmental impact.

Neither bed bugs nor lice carry diseases, however, the best method of preventing an infestation is regular inspection.

Learn to spot signs of bed bug bites, the presence of head lice and treatment methods.

Custodial personnel at the school system are aware of specific instances of bed bugs and head lice and are working diligently to clean any contaminated areas to ensure that all staff and students are provided a safe learning environment.

Latest news for bed bug bites in Houston, Texas.

Bed bugs got their name because they like to be as close to their human hosts as possible. Since they are after nourishment found in human blood, the most ideal place for them to reside is in the bedroom furniture, bedding and carpeting. Bed bugs are becoming more and more resilient to chemical treatments, so the best treatment option for eradicating a bed bug infestation is through the use of heat.

Heat treatment has several benefits over alternative methods. Since the approach is chemical-free, there are no lingering odors or allergy risks to the homes occupants. It is a total-kill technique, meaning bed bugs in all the stages of life cannot withstand the treatment regardless of how inaccessible they are. Home furnishings and belongings do not sustain any damage due to the heat, and, best of all, treatment can be completed in one session, avoiding the problem of reinfestations.

The eMaster Pro electric unit operates by using heated room air to treat infested areas of the home. Air temperature is raised as air passes over the units heating coils and is blown into rooms up to 375 square feet in size. With no generator required, this unit is portable and can easily treat dorms, hotel rooms and small apartments.

Direct-fired propane heating units are the most common heater used to treat bed bug infestations in Houston. For the safety of the home and its occupants, the units stay outside the building and air as hot as 210F is forced into the infected areas of the structure. Gas detection is performed to ensure good air quality for anyone exposed.

Like the eMaster Pro unit, this heater effectively raises the rooms temperature to levels not tolerable to bed bugs in any life stage. All areas of the home, including interior and exterior walls, are heated, ensuring complete extermination. Treatment with the direct-fired propane heaters also requires only one session and does not harm the home or its contents. Since it is chemical-free, the treatment poses no harm to pets or small children following the process.

Bed bugs are hardy, resistant little pests that usually take repeated attempts to clear out of a home when using chemicals or home-based techniques. Fortunately, skilled professionals experienced in electric and direct-fired propane heating units are able to effectively eliminate a bed bug infestation from the home in a single treatment session. Heat treatment is the best way to ensure that a home can return to pest-free conditions without concern that reinfestations may occur.

WhiskeyGirl Generations ago, there was a war against bed bugs. The high brows found solutions. IIRC, it was a simple as adding a small amount of pesticide to soft furniture like couches, chairs, mattresses...

Generations of Americans grew up without first hand experience of bed bugs. Same with lice. For generations, "No Nits" was the policy in school. Past generations didn't want anyone to suffer from bed bugs or lice.

Then there were people worried about a little pesticide and those few people who might be sensitive. The solution? No pesticide and bed bug infestations pop up all over.

Then there were people that worried that some children might feel bad because they got sent home from school for having lice or nits. Can't have any child feeling bad or learning about hygiene. So, just send a note home and let every child get lice in school. No more "No Nits" policies. Having lice doesn't mean your icky or bad.

It seems like the progressives among us would rather have people (especially poor people and children) living with bed bugs and lice than living parasite free.

What about Chagas? I keep hearing that it's being spread by illegal aliens flooding the country. The new lice/bed bug super parasite? I've read that Chagas KILLS!

Facts -

Triatomine bugs live primarily in mud, thatch or adobe huts in Mexico, South America and Central America. They hide in crevices in the walls or roof during the day, then come out at night often feeding on sleeping humans.

Infected bugs defecate after feeding, leaving behind T. cruzi parasites on the skin. The parasites can then enter your body through your eyes, mouth, a cut or scratch, or the wound from the bug's bite.

Scratching or rubbing the bite site helps the parasites enter your body. Once in your body, the parasites multiply and spread.
