How to Identify Bed Bugs | Ehrlich Pest Control

Bed bugs look different depending on their stage of life. They are very small and hard to see. No matter what life stage the bed bug is in, they are tiny and during their egg and early nymph stages they are whitish or even translucent. When a bed bug has not eaten in a while they are flat and about the same rough size, shape and even color of an apple seed.

Bed bugs are a potentially serious pest for people, but they can be confused for other insects. In order to provide the right and most effective treatments, bed bugs must be correctly identified and found. If even one batch of bed bugs is missed, a whole new infestation can occur.

Ehrlich Technicians have received specialized training to properly identify bed bugs in all of their life stages.

Think you have bed bugs? Need help determining for sure? Call Ehrlich today at (888) 976-4649 for advice and to schedule a FREE bed bug inspection of your home or business.

Eggs are very small elongated shapes that are whitish or almost translucent. After they hatch bed bugs are considered nymphs and their early stages they are also white, but get darker with each segment of their life cycle.

There are some other insects that resemble bed bugs. Some of them can bite like bed bugs, but mostly they are parasites or pests for certain animals. These include:

Bed Bug Information – California Hotel & Lodging Association

Understandably, the traveling public has become concerned about bed bugs in light of recent media reports around the world. That said, travelers rarely encounter bed bugs and most members of the general public have never even seen a bed bug. This increased public awareness has helped travelers to be aware and, if necessary, modify their behaviors to minimize the risk of a bed bug infestation.

Bed bugs have been household pests for over 3,000 years, however, were all but eradicated in the developed world in the 1950s, through new pest management controls, widespread use of vacuum cleaners and washing machines. The resurgence largely began in the late 1990s with more targeted pest control products and methods, increased international travel and a lack of public awareness.

According to a recent University of Kentucky study, a person is almost one-third more likely to encounter bed bugs at home rather than at a lodging property. Additionally, bed bugs should not be equated with filth or sanitation problems bed bugs are not known to carry any diseases to humans and are only a nuisance.

One benefit to the increased media reports is also increased prevention. Especially in the hotel industry, prevention and control is a top priority the satisfaction of our guests is of paramount importance. Finally, just because someone anonymously reported bed bugs at a particular hotel, does not mean there are bed bugs at the hotel. Many of these reports have been linked to disgruntled guests and even competitive hotels, and shown to be false claims. Even if it says on the internet that a hotel has bed bugs and a hotel has unfortunately had bed bugs, most likely by the time this information was posted on the internet, the bed bugs have been eradicated.

Below are several useful resources for basic bed bug information, frequently asked questions and prevention tips, as well as information on what the hotel industry is doing to educate hoteliers and prevent infestations at lodging properties.

Helpful ReviewsAlex Hotel & SuitesPugo C.rated

Recently stayed here twice and was happy with the hotel and the location. It's on Spenard, a short walk to some great inexpensive restaurants, and not far from the airport. My only complaint was regarding the hotel airport shuttle. It's inconsistent at best. On arrival the first night we were told it would be 45 minutes as he'd taken some people to the train station. We therefore took a cab. The next morning we thought we'd booked an airport shuttle for 6:30 but the driver was leaving again for a different destination and wouldn't take us to the airport. We again took a cab. The next time there (a week later) I was told the shuttle would be 6-7 minutes. After 15 minutes I called the hotel again, they said "sorry, the driver had to go to the bathroom" and in fact it took another 10 minutes before he finally arrived. We were exhausted and really wanted to get to our rooms, and would have again taken a cab had we known it would be such a long wait. They do shuttles to downtown anchorage and the farmers' market, and I asked the desk when that would leave again (was told 15 minutes or so). Then when I went back down I learned that someone had needed to go earlier, so they took him right away and weren't going to be going again, so I missed my shuttle. The person I talked to was pretty blase about it and said I could take the bus which wasn't far from the hotel. That wasn't the issue, but that I was told a departure time only to learn that they'd changed it without letting me know.

My mother, sister and I stayed here in june of 2014. The many reviews I read of negative remarks originally scarde me. But as budget wise travelers I chose to try it out. It was a great decision. We were checked in immediately upon arrival. After a long stay at the anchorage airport that was great! We were welcomed to the hotel, after the shuttle picked us up, and our rooms were clean. Breakfast was decent. Our bellies were filled. The shuttle even dropped us off downtown at the summer market later in the day! (Beware of prices in the market for souvenirs. ...go out and venture the city once done with the market...cheaper souveniers) Ok, back to hotel. Its worth what you pay and two stars. Expecting glamour is ridiculous but, quality of envirnoment and amenities are just right!

My wife and I were fortunate enough to make a four night reservation at the Alex Hotel in Anchorage. Our room was spacious and comfortable, and that bed was SOOO comfortable. Shortly after our arrival in Anchorage we had to make a significant change to our travel plans which required us to stay in the hotel for nine nights instead of four nights. Hotel management could not have been more accommodating if I had owned the hotel; they were able to confirm a nine night stay instead of four, even during a time of heavy booking. What a relief it was to have a room available when we needed it! We will look forward to staying in the Alex Hotel on our next trip to Anchorage.

What Are Bed Bugs and What Do the Bites Look Like?

Bed bugs resurged worldwide in the late 1990s.Once limited to hotel and motel rooms, these blood-sucking insects (both the Cimex lectularius and Cimex hemipterus) became a problem in many homes, hotels, and even movie theaters.

These recent infestations are probably due to insecticide resistance and increased international travel, according to a study published in Clinical Microbiology Review.

Fortunately, bed bugs aren't known to spread contagious diseases.

However, these blood-sucking insects can cause anemia if you get too many and may trigger asthma attacks.

With an appearance like many other common bites, bed bug bites often appear as small itchy raised red areas on exposed skin - usually a few days after the actual bite. Some children and adults don't develop a reaction to the bites at all, even after repeated exposure.

On the skin, the bites can appear as:

There is not a direct link between poor sanitation and bed bug infestations. A pristinely clean living space is as vulnerable as a messy one. Usually, sleeping in a place where multiple people have sleptincreases your risk. You might especially suspect bed bugs if you or your child:

A proper diagnosis is the important first step to successful treatment. Unfortunately, clinicians commonly misdiagnose bed bug bites as:

Once correctly identified, there are no bed bug specific treatments for people, but you must eliminate these pests from your home. Your clinician might prescribe:

Although treating bed bug bits isn't difficult, actually getting rid of the bed bugs is another story. Many people report that they have to throw away mattresses and other household items.

A professional exterminator can help.

In order to minimize your risk, you can:

Treating Bed Bug Bites / How to Treat Bed Bug Bites

After the initial reaction of discovering bed bugs in your home it is very likely the next thought will be:

Can they make my family sick?

The good news is that there have been very few cases of bed bug bites causing more than inflammation at the sight of feeding. Though getting rid of the bugs and keeping them from coming back is a headache, you can rest knowing that they are more a disgusting annoyance than a danger to your health.

Lets take a closer look at bed bug bites and bed bug bite symptoms.

How do you know when you have been bitten by a bed bug?

Bed bugs pierce the skin of the host with their elongated beaks. The bed bug injects an anti-blood-clotting chemical called apyrases which allow them to withdraw the blood. They will feed for 5-10 minutes until gorged.

There is no one overall reaction to being a host. The reality is that most people do not even know they are the source of the bed bugs meal. There may be no obvious marks on their body and no sense of having been bitten. The majority of the time bed bugs feast while their hosts are sleeping which is another reason they are less likely to feel such a tiny sensation.

Not everyone is this lucky. There are reported and verified cases in which the host has a severe reaction, often in the form of swelling, and welts. Because the bed bug does its by night, many times the reaction of redness, swelling or itching is attributed to mosquitoes. This of course, allows for the infestation to continue until the bed bugs are discovered.

One telling sign of the bed bug bite versus that of the more familiar mosquito is the body part which contains the redness or swelling. Bed bugs tend to host on parts of the body that are exposed while sleeping. Therefore, you are going to find them on the neck, face, upper arms, shoulders and hands.

As mentioned earlier, in most cases there is no major concern of illness caused by serving as a host to bed bugs. There are however, pathogens that are found in the body of the bed bugs but they do not seem to be transmitted to humans or other hosts. Generally, the bites are more annoying than they are dangerous. Much like other bug bites, that of the bed bug tends to be itchy and may cause inflammation when scratched. It is important to remember that scratching that itch can further cause infection.

The best way to treat the bed bug bites are to relieve the bite symptoms with the use of an antihistamine or corticosteroids prescribed to reduce discomfort. Other over the counter topical ointments may also be used.

A well regarded product combination that fits the bill is All Stops Healing Gel and ProEcza Cream. The ProEcza relieves your itchy skin while the Healing Gel goes to work deeper into the infected bite to minimize the irritation. What this means is that it helps you stop itching right away and it also calms the irritation down so your skin reaction isnt so severe. Youve seen pictures of bed bug bites they can be embarrassing to go out in public with.

Just as with any treatment to a wound, especially with children, the infirm or the elderly, it is wise to talk to a physician or pharmacist to help you find the best relief of the discomfort caused by bed bug bites.
