Parents irked about bed bug problem at Savoy Elementary School in DC – FOX 5 DC

FOX 5's Tisha Lewis reports.

WASHINGTON - Some parents at Savoy Elementary School in Southeast D.C. are fuming over a bed bug and rodent problem at their childrens school.

The school told FOX 5 that they sent a letter home with students saying professionals were hired to get rid of the pests. But some parents told us that the problem is still persisting.

On Tuesday, one parent wrote to us and said:

"This is not how you should notify parents of rats and bed bugs. I had to see it on the news. Then, the school doesn't notify the parents until 4 days later."

The school district said they are working on the problem, but for some parents, that is not enough. Aaron Doughty, another Savoy Elementary parent, said he plans to keep his kids out of school until the problem is resolved.

They won't be back because they have several bites on them and Im very concerned about the situation, he said. I will not be sending them to school.

Doughty added, I made a few calls and once I hear something back about them properly taking care of the situation, then I will consider sending them back, but I have to protect them.

Doughty had photos showing what he said are bed bug bites on his 9- and 10-year-old daughters. He said the bed bug bites started around Christmas and have only gotten worse.

He said the school nurse told him the school was infested with bed bugs months ago, but it was only this past Friday that D.C. Public Schools sent home a letter to parents describing what the school district called an increase of unwanted pests in the building.

Doughty was not satisfied with the correspondence.

The school district said in December, the school was placed on a 3-day-a-week extermination schedule. D.C. Public Schools released a statement last week saying:

"We were made aware of an incident of bed bugs at Savoy Elementary School, and we hired professional cleaning contractors to thoroughly clean the school, developed an ongoing cleaning plan for the building, and ordered new nap mats with two-foot risers. We are working with the school and the community to be vigilant in keeping unwanted pests from entering the building."

School bed bug, rodent issues prompt some to hold ‘sick-out’ as Chancellor continues investigation – FOX 5 DC

D.C. Schools Chancellor Antwan Wilson appeared on FOX 5 Friday and said he issues at Savoy Elementary are extremely import to him. "We want to make sure that the school is safe. That everyone is healthy. And, you know, I'm looking to get to the botto

WASHINGTON - Several people who say they are teachers at D.C.'s Savoy Elementary School have told FOX 5 that they will not report to school today following ongoing reports of problems with bed bugs and rodents inside of the building.

An emergency meeting about the reported infestation was held Thursday but provided few answers for outraged parents. Representatives from D.C. Public Schools, the Department of General Services, and The Department of Health were at the meeting to talk about the reported issues; however, parents say a clear solution on how to address the problem was not given.

FOX 5's Melanie Alnwick was at the school Friday morning and said that the 'sick-out' was not school-wide and that some teachers were seen going into the building. She also spoke with the Teacher's Union who told her they were not aware of how many teachers the 'sick-out' involved.

Many parents at Thursday's meeting told FOX 5 that they wanted the school closed until the problem was resolved. Many shared their fear of possibly contaminating their own homes with bed bugs brought back into the house with their children.

D.C. Schools Chancellor Antwan Wilson appeared on FOX 5 Friday and said he issues at Savoy Elementary are extremely import to him. "We want to make sure that the school is safe. That everyone is healthy. And, you know, I'm looking to get to the bottom of this," he said.

Wilson said work has been carried out to make sure that the school is properly cleaned. He said that more work is being scheduled to address all problems in the building.

He said he wasn't able to attend Thursday's meeting but it was important to him that the school system be in continuously communication with parents, students, and staff regarding the situation.

Wilson also said that moving students to different schools or to a different building while the infestation issues are addressed may be an option.

Bed Bug Control | Western Exterminator

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) have been recognized as pests since the 17th century, and were introduced to the New World by early colonists. Bed bugs were quite common in the U.S. prior to World War II, but declined in incidence after the mid 20th century, primarily due to the widespread use of synthetic insecticides such as DDT. Improvements in sanitation and personal hygiene, along with more vigilant regulations and consumer knowledge about the use of second-hand furniture are also likely contributors to bed bugs becoming known to most of us only through a children's nursery rhyme.

Although never totally eliminated, bed bug populations dwindled enough for most of us to ignore them. That has changed. Bed bugs have undergone a dramatic resurgence worldwide, and in the past decade, bed bugs have begun making a comeback across the United States; in many areas becoming a major nuisance pest.

International travel and commerce are factors in the recent spread of these insect hitchhikers, which can be readily transported in luggage, clothing, bedding and furniture. There are some experts that believe the small population that remained in the U.S. after the 1950's were 'super bugs', resistant to the chemicals available to treat them.

Bed bugs can be found anywhere, and not just in your bed. They are still most frequently found in dwellings with a high rate of occupant turnover, such as hotels, motels, hostels, dormitories and apartment complexes; but can be found in private homes, movie theaters, high-end stores and on public transportation. Such infestations usually are not a reflection of poor hygiene or bad housekeeping. However, once established, bed bugs are persistent and getting rid of them also requires persistence.

Dont Let the Bed Bugs Bite: Orkin Releases New Top 50 …

Baltimore Holds Top Spot on Bed Bugs Cities List

ATLANTA (January 3, 2017) Baltimore tops this years Top 50 Bed Bug Cities list, released today by pest control leader Orkin. In the six years Orkin has released the bed bug city rankings, this is the first time Baltimore has made the top five, moving up nine spots since last year. Four metro regions Las Vegas, Portland, Salt Lake City and Greensboro-High Point-Winston Salem made the list for the first time this year.

The list is based on treatment data from the metro areas where Orkin performed the most bed bug treatments from December 1, 2015 November 30, 2016. This ranking includes both residential and commercial treatments.

We have more people affected by bed bugs in the United States now than ever before, says Orkin Entomologist and Director of Technical Services Ron Harrison, Ph.D., adding that bed bugs are a growing issue. They were virtually unheard of in the U.S. 10 years ago, he says.

According to a 2015 Bugs without Borders Survey by the National Pest Management Association, nearly all (99.6 percent) of pest professionals nationwide have treated bed bugs in the past year, up from five, 10 and 15 years ago.

Bed bugs are great hitchhikers because they travel from place to place with ease, including luggage, purses and other belongings. Bed bugs can be found anywhere, from single family homes, apartments and hotel, to public places like movie theaters, public transit and libraries and offices.

Anyone can get bed bugs in their home. They are not a sign of uncleanliness. Bed bugs only need blood to survive. We have treated for bed bugs in everything from million dollar homes to public housing, Harrison says.

Bed bugs can be difficult to detect and treat because of their small size and ability to survive up to a year without feeding. They are about the size of an apple seed when fully grown, and can hide around seams of a mattress, behind headboards and in cracks and crevices, usually within a five-foot radius of the bed. The first signs of a bed bug infestation are often the bed bugs themselves or small dark stains bed bugs can leave behind.

People may have bed bugs and not know it, because many people have no physical reaction to bed bug bites, Harrison says. Thats why its important for people everywhere to inspect for bed bugs regularly.

While the 50 metro areas listed above required the most treatments for bed bugs in 2016, Orkin has treated for bed bugs in all 50 states and around the world. To help detect and prevent bed bugs, Orkin recommends homeowners and travelers do the following:

At Home:

During travel, remember the acronym S.L.E.E.P to inspect for bed bugs:

Bed bugs can quickly become a major problem, as they can spread from room to room if undetected and allowed to multiply. Anyone who suspects a bed bug infestation should contact a pest management professional immediately.
