Ozone Experiment Got Bed Bugs? Bedbugger Forums

Hi Jon,

Let me enlighten you on my experience.

In 2005 I became the worlds first dedicated exterminator of bed bugs having worked extensively on them for the previous 2 or 3 years.

I have now completed in the region of 11,000 infestation and my company treat up to 12 properties per day.

We look at and review all available technologies which have either become available and a few that did not make it through field testing.

My comments about crevice saturation come from a rather detailed knowledge of gas movements and how they mix in various atmospheres. Unfortunately when you are dealing with micro climates which tend to be generated around bed bug refugia you see that the edge effect and limited atomic movement mean that mixing is not complete and fully efficient. Therefore gases have problems getting into locations where bed bugs are hold up for about 98% of their time.

Now if you are telling me that Ozone behaves in a different way to all others gases please provide data to illustrate this.

I have read previous work on Ozone and bed bugs and although I cant lay my hands on the information as to what ppm is needed to be fatal I am sure someone who has tested this type of system will dig it out.

As for being out of my ball park, I hold two university degrees in biological sciences and had a very successful career in technology evaluation and commercial development before I decided to become a pest controller. My first degree covered many aspects of science from microbiology and genetics to obscure subjects like micro climatology and environmental physics. The UK higher education system works on very different principles to the US and we tend to cover subject in a lot more detail earlier in our studies than the US system.

My argument is that gas based technologies regardless of the gas all need to overcome the issues surrounding Brownian motion in micro climates, Ozone may have less of an issue being a smaller molecule but the laws of physics still apply.

I am not trying to put the concept down just highlighting the fact that you need to do more than just post, a little evidence would go a long way to convincing people that you have the concept right as opposed to the others that muddied the water before you.

I hope that clarifies.

David

The common bed bug is a small, reddish-brown insect. Bed bugs areoval-shaped with flattened bodies. Bed bugs feed on the blood of humans and animals to survive. Unlikesome parasites, such as fleas or lice, bed bugs do not live ontheir hosts but only visit them to feed. Bed bugs are most activeat night. Their bite is similar to being bitten by a mosquito it ispainless and may results in a small, red, itchy bump. However, manypeople have no reaction at all. Bed bugs cannot fly and prefer to hide close to their hosts whennot feeding. They can be found in apartments, hotels, homes, shelters, and student dormitories. Bed bugs can also hide onclothing or in luggage when you travel and can be brought to placeslike your home or hotel. Reports of bed bug problems have been on the rise. The increase inbed bugs is thought to be the result of changes in modern pestcontrol practices including the use of insect specific baits andgels, which do not work for bed bug control. In addition, morepeople are traveling abroad increasing the chance of bringing theinsect back in their luggage.

What are bed bugs?

Bed bugs are insects that feed on the blood of people and animals. They are small, flat, brown, and oval. They do not have wings.

Bed bugs are becoming an increasing problem in many cities and towns. This may be because more people are traveling out of the country to places where bed bugs are a problem. It may also be because certain pesticides for bed bug infestations have been banned.

Bed bugs usually get into your home through luggage, clothing, or other personal items during travel. Sometimes hotels have bed bugs. Bed bugs can crawl into your luggage and get carried back to your home. It only takes one bed bug to get an infestation started in your home.

Bed bugs may also get into your house by crawling onto your clothes, but this is not likely. A more common way to bring bed bugs into your home is if you buy and wear used clothes or used furniture that have bed bugs in them.

Yes, you should look closely at used furniture before you bring it home.

Check apartments and dorm rooms. Living in close quarters can make it easier to get bed bugs. They often live in the spaces between walls. If an apartment next to yours has bed bugs, you might also have them. It is hard to fix bed bug problems until all apartments within the building have taken steps to get rid of them.

Check vacant apartments for bed bugs before moving in. Bed bugs can survive for months without feeding.

Signs of bed bug infestation may be:

Bed bugs are not known to transmit any infectious diseases. Their bite looks like the bite of most blood-sucking insects and may cause some skin irritation. Some bites might not be noticed, while others turn into larger sores.

Wash the area of the bite with an antiseptic soapto reduce infection, and resist the urge to scratch. Contact your health provider if the bite becomes infected.

If you see the signs of bed bug infestation, you should look closely in all areas of your home to find out if you have bed bugs.

In most cases, a landlord or property manager is required by law to maintain the dwelling they own without insect infestation (MA: 105 CMR 410.550). It is the landlords responsibility to respond to any complaints of bed bugs.

If someone is renting a single-family home, the owner is not responsible for extermination as long as they maintain upkeep of home. In these cases the occupant is required to pay.

If you are a tenant, contact your landlord so that they can hire a licensed exterminator to identify the insect and develop an extermination plan or IPM (Integrated Pest Management) Plan to eliminate them.

Encourage tenants to report bed bugs. Respond quickly to complaints with inspection and intervention.

Bed bugs at KCI leads to closure of mezzanine in Terminal …

Bed bugs were discovered Thursday inside Terminal B of the Kansas City International Airport.

Airport staff found a live infestation on an upholstered chair in a sitting area near several restaurants, according to Kathleen Hefner, a spokeswoman for KCI. Bed bugs weren't found in any other area.

"The mezzanine area in Terminal B is closed briefly out of an abundance of caution to clean for bed bugs found (in a chair) by staff," Hefner said.

Bed bugs were discovered Thursday in Terminal B of the Kansas City International Airport, leading officials to close the mezzanine area.

Hefner stressed that the bed bugs, though located near restaurants, have not contaminated any food prep areas.

"This is not a food-related issue," she said. "The restaurants just happened to be adjacent to the seating in the area."

The area will likely reopen tomorrow, Hefner added.
