More Bed Bugs Breach Hospitals How Do You Get Rid of …

Hospitals have some of the strictest cleanliness protocols. And accordingly so given that bacteria from unsanitary practices could impend the life of patients. But sadly, even those protocols are not enough to block the breaking in of bed bugswhen not using bed bug spray.

As it was said in a recent post by marketwatch.com, those vampire-like pests are a big headache to hospitals nowadays. Worse, the number of their infestations has been increasing in the past few years so it is important to know how to get rid of bed bugs.

According to the survey of the National Pest Management Association, in 2012, the number of treated bed bug infestations in hospitals was 6% higher than in 2011. And if compared with the cases of bed bugs in 2010, it was twice as many.

It was pointed out that the going in and out of many patients and visitors was the major reason of the hike in hospital bed bug infestations. But apart from it, the surge of bed bug cases in nursing homes also contributed to the growing bed bug problem. Thats because many of hospital patients came from those facilities.

Particularly, as bed bug experts shared, from 2010, there was a 46% increase in the number of pest-control treatment involving those blood-thirsty insects in nursing homes.

As if adapting to health-care reform and curbing the nightmare bacteria werent challenge enough, hospitals are increasingly plagued by another problem: bedbugs.

More than a third of pest-management companies treated bedbug infestations in hospitals in 2012, 6% more than the year before and more than twice as many as in 2010, according to a survey released today by the National Pest Management Association. The percentage of exterminators dealing with bedbugs in nursing homes has also almost doubled since 2010, to 46%. Bedbug experts also report seeing them in ambulances.

No matter how clean a place, bed bugs could infest it. The reported increase of bed bug cases in hospitals backs that up. Hence, you shouldnt be too complacent that those insects wont invade your house just because you tidied it up.

But neither does that mean that you shouldnt clean just because dirty or not, bed bugs could invade your place anyway. Apart from the many risks that presents to your health, clutter offers those vampire-like pests more spots to conceal themselves. And that adds more work to your bed bug inspection and treatment processes.

So, to maintain a healthy indoor environment and to limit the bed bug spots in your house, you must take steps to regularly clean your place.

But then again, when it comes to bed bugs, just limiting their hiding spots shouldnt just be your goal. You must aim to eliminate them and prevent their return. Or else, youll suffer from their bed bug bites and the additional finances that they bring along them.

Read on and learn what you could to attain that goal.

Before we move on to the process to kill bed bugs though, lets go over first the why of bed bug elimination. Why do you have to get rid of them?

Generally, there are two reasons why you need to get rid of those blood-fed pests. They are:

Bed bugs can invade almost any furniture piece. Apart from their favorite item to infest the bed they could make a home out of your couch and closet. Even on wall hangings, tables, shelves and books, they could hide on those items.

If the infestation is detected early on, those items could still be saved from the pests. Its a different story though when it comes to a major infestation. Most of the time, you would not have any other choice but to throw away the infested pieces. Needless to say, their replacements would cost you money. Even your alternative, which is to hire an exterminator, would cost you big. Hence, it is necessary that you yourself would kill bed bugs early.

Bed bugs are not known to transmit illnesses. However, they could still negatively affect your general well-being. For one, bed bug bites could bring allergies. To others, their marks are also sources of embarrassment.

Another thing, it was recently discovered that those pests could also cause anxiety. In some cases, they even lead to paranoia.

Now that you know the why of bed bug elimination, lets move over to the how of it.

There are two methods most commonly used in bed bug treatment regardless if a hired exterminator would do it or you execute the elimination yourself.

As you surely have deduced just by the name of the process alone, this method basically uses high temperature to kill bed bugs. And according to many, this works effectively. Within 15 minutes of heat treatment with temperature higher than 113 degrees Fahrenheit, bed bugs and its nymphs would die. Up to 60 minutes of it would kill the eggs of the pests.

However, bed bug heat treatment is easier said than done. It requires a huge machine to carry out the process. Moreover, with the risks it presents, its best that a professional would it. And with that comes the big amount that you would surely need.

Pesticides offer the most-convenient way to kill bed bugs. It makes the bed bug extermination inexpensive as it allows you to do the process by yourself. Remember though, you must only go for a do-it-yourself bed bug treatment if the infestation is not yet massive and youre sure that you could handle it yourself.

In addition to being a convenient method to exterminate the pest, the use of a bed bug spray also allows you to quickly respond to any bed bug sighting. With it, you could do a treatment promptly. And consequently, that prevents any bed bug infestation from getting worse which saves you from a huge expense.

There is one problem though. It was recently discovered that bed bugs have developed resistance to pesticides. They mutated, developed a harder outer shell and changed their metabolism to somehow reject the solutions.

If thats the case, how should you eliminate bed bugs?

But is there a non-pesticide bed bug spray that exist?

Actually, there is. Its called Bed Bug Bully.

Bed Bug Bully is made with organic ingredients. It does not contain the chemicals called pyrethoids that bed bugs have developed immunity on. And so, it works effectively on the pests just as pest-control companies and hotels have proven already.

Apart from that, Bed Bug Bully is also safe for health and even the environment. The EPA has classified it as pesticide-exempt under FIFRA 25(b)

Will laundry detergent + cold water wash kill bed bugs …

What Cilecto said.

I will only add the following:

Most prep sheets for PCOs require a hot water wash and a long time in a dryer because by doing both you're dramatically increasing the chances that you'll kill more of the bugs and their eggs.

Heat is the enemy of bed bugs. It is one of the fastest ways to kill them.

Many bugs and eggs will be killed by drowning in cold water with detergent. (Detergent does something to the surface tension of water that makes it more likely bugs will drown. I'm an English major, so please do not ask me to explain the science at work there. I just know that when I was battling ants, if I put plain water on the plate that I sat my cat's food bowl on, the ants would toss the dead bodies of their compatriots into the water and use the corpses as a bridge to the food.

But if I put dish soap around the edge, they couldn't do that.)

However, not all of them will be. Using hot water increases the chances of killing them.

Unfortunately for you, it's the time in the dryer that really is most efficient at killing them. So much so that most people say that if items are already clean, you can put those items into the dryer and run it long enough to get every nook and cranny of the item to be hot and then let the dryer run for 20 minutes past that point and that should kill the bugs and the eggs.

In other words, the washing even in hot water is far less effective than time in the dryer when it comes to killing bugs and their eggs.

(The bugs often glue the eggs in place, so just vacuuming won't solve the egg problem.)

While putting items on a line to dry--indoors or out--is very environmentally friendly, it's a useless method when it comes to killing bed bugs.

Even in warm temperatures, unfortunately.

(BTW to everyone else, no, I'm not dead. I also didn't decide that I didn't want to talk about bed bugs any longer. It's just midterms, so things are very hectic at work, and I haven't had as much time to be around on the boards. Now that California is climbing out of its fiscal crisis--however slowly we're climbing--my employment levels have gone back up, so time has been doubly short. Last year, for example, I was only teaching 75% of full time in the spring. I'm back up to full time. In the fall. my hours at the local community college dropped to 60% of what they normally are. In short, I'm back to a week that means the contracts say that I'm working 50 hours a week. Since those contracts seem to underestimate how long prep and grading actually take, I'm often working more hours a week than that. I will continue to pop in when I can, but there may be longer delays between posts and replies. Sorry about that. I just have a ton of grading to do. Trust me, I would much rather be posting here than grading--as my colleague said just yesterday, she would actually rather be getting a root canal, which she's actually had recently, than be grading-- but until I get more grading done, I have to dole out time here as a reward.)

Californias New Bed Bug Laws, 2018 | Get Debedbugged

Protecting Californias Renters Against Bed Bugs

A new state legal amendmentrequiring CA landlords to provide tenants with written information about bed bugs and how to report possible infestations to their landlords has been enacted.

The law from which the amendment stems from is unique in that it is aimed specifically at bed bugs.

This is due to the serious expenses associated with them, and the difficulty professionals have with containing them. If youre on this site, youre likely no stranger to this reality.

That difficulty is magnified in multifamily housing where people live in close proximity such as in apartments.

Curious about the entire extent of protections you have as a tenant in California? Give theCalifornia Renters Bed Bug Protections post a read.

You can skip to the bottom of this section for an infographic on the changes.

The amendment to Section 1942.5 has put into place a number of protections for renters that were glaringly missing in the past.

For example, landlords can no longer show, lease, or rent out units with active infestations.

It also disallows landlords from retaliating against tenants who report their bed bug problems.

Landlords cannot raise rent, reduce services, or otherwise retaliate against a tenant who notified or complains property owners about a suspected bed bug problem.

These two rules alone are a big deal in terms of promoting human decency and a basic standards of living.

That being said, I think that we can agree that its amazing that these protections werent already in place.

Landlords will now also be required to provide written disclosure of a units bed bug infestation history from the past two years should prospecting tenants ask for it.

Also new is a requirement that landlords must hire a licensed pest control operator (PCO) within two days of receiving notice.

The professional must inspect the complaining unit, as well as its immediate next-door neighbors, units across the hall, above, and below the affected unit.

Finally, one should note that property owners are not yet required to inspect units for bed bugs without a complaint or notice on the books.

If, however, the landlord has received notice, or if an infestation is apparent through visual inspection, the landlord is presumed to know about the infestation, therefore making them liable.

Feel free to use this graphic so long as you attribute it back to this site. For a full-resolution copy, click the image or see this link.

The Amendment is already in effect for new Californian tenants as of July 1st, 2017, existing tenants will be included come January 1st, 2018.

All of these protections have their value and will serve Californians well. In reality, the amendment does not broadly solve the growing issue of bed bugs.

Bed bugs are maintaining their upward trend throughout America, with California being something of a hotbed.

In August of 2017, Terminix published a bed bug report sharing that San Diego ranked 20th of the countrys most infested cities, while San Francisco came in at 15th.

Meanwhile, pest control professionals at Orkin published a study based on bed bug treatment data from the areas where they performed the most bed bug treatments from December 1, 2015 November 30, 2016.

They ranked Los Angeles at 6th and San Francisco at 10th.

It is still important to take preemptive measures if you plan on renting or living in multi-family housing.

Debedbugged as a site is a huge advocate of preventing bed bugs. The easiest way to not get seriously infested is to catch them as early as possible. Infestations caught early on help tenants and landlords alike.

The earlier you catch on, the easier to treat and manage they are; they process is far more affordable as a consequence.

Proactively placing bed bug traps, communicating with neighbors, traveling with bed bugs in mind, being careful around used goods (furniture especially), and being privy to bed bug signs could save you more grief than these amendments ever could.

There are resources like the traveling checklist all over this site that will help you be more prepared should bed bugs make an appearance in your life. For the complete package, see the free Debedbugged Ebook.

I hope that some of what you learn here makes it a supremely short appearance!

Its great that the State of California has made a choice to further protect tenants, but you are most powerful when you take control of your dwelling by educating yourself and taking preventative measures.

As always, congratulations on investing in your own health, and best of luck in your fight to get Debedbugged!

Difference between Ticks and Bed bugs | Ticks vs Bed bugs

Key difference: Ticks are tiny, wingless, ectoparasites that belong to the Arachnida class, the same class that spiders belong to. In order to attach to a host, the ticks climb to the ends of leaves, plants and shrubs and wait for the host to pass by them. They then attach themselves to the host and find an appropriate place to feed, which include traveling all over the body. The bed bug, on the other hand, is a reddish brown, oval and flat insect, shaped like an apple seed. They usually live and hide in the cracks and crevices of beds, box springs, headboards and bed frames.

Ticks are tiny, wingless, ectoparasites that belong to the Arachnida class, the same class that spiders belong to. There are various different types of ticks such as the American deer tick, sheep tick, and cattle tick. Ticks can be classified into three families: Ixodidae (hard ticks), Argasidae (soft ticks) and Nuttalliellidae. The hard ticks often have a small hard shell on the back of their mouths. They are often found all over the world, commonly in warm, wooded and humid conditions. Ticks require a certain amount of moisture in the air for metamorphosis. Ticks do not spend their whole lives on one host and depend on a variety of hosts from a variety of species for nutrition.

Ticks are divided into two primary sections: the anterior capitulum and the posterior idiosoma. The anterior capitulum contains the head and mouth of the ticks, while the posterior idiosoma contains the legs, stomach and reproductive organs. Like all arachnids, ticks have eight legs. They have a two year life cycle, during which they can infect up to three hosts. In order to attach to a host, the ticks climb to the ends of leaves, plants and shrubs and wait for the host to pass by them. They then attach themselves to the host and find an appropriate place to feed, which include traveling all over the body. They also like shaded areas such as the ears, hair, the inside of the arms, etc. After the ticks are full, they drop from the human and hide until they require another feeding for metamorphosis.

The ticks feed by inserting their pincers into the host and excreting an anticoagulant to keep the blood from clogging. The anticoagulant is what often causes the bumps and the itchiness. The ticks cannot jump or fly and are usually crawl to get anywhere they want. Their legs also contain a unique sensory organ known as the Haller's organ, which can detect odors and chemical changes to the hosts skin. Ticks are considered dangerous because they are known to spread diseases and pathogens to the host. Also since they do not spend their whole lives attach to one host, they can often spread germs and diseases from one host to another.

The bed bug, on the other hand, is a reddish brown, oval and flat insect, shaped like an apple seed. The newly hatched bed bug nymphs are colorless and have a translucent exoskeleton. They usually live and hide in the cracks and crevices of beds, box springs, headboards and bed frames.

The bed bugs usually feed at night when the person in sleeping. The bite of a bed bug is usually red, and often has a darker red spot in the middle. The bites are mainly arranged in a cluster or a line pattern and they may or may not itch depending on the person. Bed bugs are known to bite on the face, neck, arms and hands of the person. Some people might have an allergic reaction to the bite that can include severe itching, blisters or hives.

While, both are parasitic infections, there are certain differences between the two. The main difference is that bed bugs are insects, while ticks are arachnids like spiders. However, both feed on the blood of humans and animals. Ticks usually attack individually and especially outside, whereas bed bugs will lead to an infestation within the house, mainly beds, other furniture, floorboards and crevices. Ticks will just attach themselves to the host and feed until it is full, then drop. While, bed bugs come out at night from their hiding places and attack their hosts while they are sleeping. Once the bed bugs are full, they will disappear back into their hiding places until the next night.

Description

Ticks bodies are divided into two sections: the anterior capitulum and the posterior idiosoma. The former contains the head and mouth parts, while the latter holds the legs, stomach and reproductive organs. Ticks have eight legs like all arachnids. Ticks have four live stages: egg, six-legged larva, eight-legged nymph and adult.

Bedbugs are reddish brown, oval and flat, about the size of an apple seed. They have no hind wings. The front wings are vestigial and reduced to pad-like structures. Bed bugs have segmented abdomens with microscopic hairs that give them a banded appearance. Adults grow to 45 mm in length and 1.53 mm wide. Can survive a wide range of temperatures and atmospheric compositions. Can survive for at least five days at 10 C (14 F), but will die after 15 minutes of exposure to 32 C (26 F)

Affects

Ticks only attach them to hosts when they require feed and fall of after the feeding is complete. They often attach and feed on animals, birds and mammals.

Live in cracks and crevices of beds, box springs, headboards and bed frames. Are active only at night.

Causes

Ticks attach themselves to leaves, plants, shrubs etc. waiting for the arrival of a host. Once the host brushes past the tick, it firmly attaches itself to the host before finding a good place to feed. They are often found on arms, stomach, behind ears and hairs. They can also be spread from clothes to skin or from animals to humans.

Breed in cracks and crevices of beds, box springs, headboards and bed frames. Dwellings can become infested in a variety of ways, such as: bugs and eggs inadvertently brought in from other infested dwellings by visiting pets; or a visiting person's clothing or luggage; infested items (such as furniture, clothing, or backpacks) brought in; nearby dwellings are infected; wild animals may introduced bugs or eggs in the dwelling; people or pets visit an infested area (such as an apartment, subway, movie theatre, or hotel) and carry the bugs back.

Risk factors

The greatest risk of getting ticks in addition to loss of blood is that ticks can spread diseases fast. When they attach themselves to the host, they insert their mouth into the skin and can also leave behind pathogens. They may also secrete a substance that would keep the host from knowing that it is being fed on.

Bedbugs are usually active at night and early morning, when its prey is sleeping heavily. The bulk of the activity usually takes place between 5 am and 6 am. They feed for 3 to 10 minutes then leave to hide. During the day, they hide in cracks and crevices of beds, box springs, headboards and bed frames. They may even hide in floorboards, walls and neighboring rooms. They can travel very fast. Hence, it is often very difficult to pin point an infestation. Many even attribute bedbug bites to rashes and allergies, as they often do not find the bedbugs.

Symptoms

Their bites can cause irritation, serious discomfort and loss of blood.

Symptoms appear a while after Red bumps, often with a darker red spot in the middle, may or may not itch.

Severity

Ticks can leave behind pathogens inside the body, making the body vulnerable to diseases. They may also result in a huge loss of blood if the infestation increases.

Severe allergic reaction may include severe itching, blisters or hives.

Prevention

Avoid going to tick-infested areas. Be fully clothed if you are required to go out. Wear light color clothing as ticks can be more visible on them. Preventive clothing also includes socks, sturdy shoes and head coverings.

Bed bugs enter a home through many possible ways, such as through traveling, visiting an infested area etc. To prevent beg bugs, one should check for bed bugs before unpacking during a trip, inspect luggage and other personal items for bed bugs after a trip, isolate infected items and treat for bedbugs, check used furniture and clothing before bringing them home, etc.

Treatment

Apply insect repellent containing 10% to 30% DEET primarily to clothes. Thoroughly check clothing, skin and hair for ticks. If ticks are crawling on clothes, use tape to remove them, do not touch them with bare hands. If tick has started feeding, using tweezers grasp it as close to the head as possible and pull it up straight do not wiggle or move side to side. Wash and clean the bitten area and apply antiseptic.

Wear covering garments while sleeping, pesticide permethrin on mosquito netting may keep them as bay. Treatment includes oral antihistamine, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl), skin cream containing hydrocortisone.

Diseases

Ticks have been known to cause certain diseases, such as Colorado tick fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, African tick bite fever, tularemia, tick-borne relapsing fever, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, Tick paralysis and tick-borne meningoencephalitis and bovine anaplasmosis.

Bed bugs can carry up to 24 different pathogens; however, they are not known to transmit any of these to humans. The greatest risk posed by bed bugs is the irritation of bites.

When to see a doctor

If the itching and redness persists or any other symptoms show up after tick bite. It is best to show a doctor incase pathogens have been released into the system.

If there is a severe allergic reaction, including severe itching, blisters or hives. If the bites do not go away and remain inflamed.
