History

The common bed bug (Cimex lectularius) has long been a pest feeding on blood, causing itchy bites and generally irritating their human hosts. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) all consider bed bugs a public health pest. However, unlike most public health pests, bed bugs are not known to transmit or spread disease. They can, cause other public health issues. So it is important to pay close attention to preventing and controlling bed bugs. Bed bugs can be hard to find and identify, given their small size and their habit of staying hidden. It helps to know what they look like since the various life stages have different forms. Knowing what to look for is the first step in identifying and controlling bed bugs. There are many insects that look like bed bugs so an accurate identification is a critical first step to avoid costly treatment for the wrong insect.

Adult bed bugs, in general, are:

Young bed bugs (also called nymphs), in general, are:

Bed bugs are experts at hiding. Their slim flat bodies allow them to fit into the smallest of spaces and stay there for long periods of time, even without a blood meal. Bed bugs are usually transported from place to place as people travel. Bed bugs travel in the seams and folds of luggage, overnight bags, folded clothes, bedding, furniture, and anywhere else where they can hide. Most people do not realize they are transporting stow-away bed bugs as they travel from location to location, infecting areas as they travel. Everyone is at risk for getting bed bugs when visiting an infected area. However, anyone who travels frequently and shares living and sleeping quarters where other people have previously slept has a higher risk of being bitten and/or spreading a bed bug infestation.

One of the easiest ways to identify a bed bug infestation is by the tell-tale bite marks on the face, neck, arms, hands, or any other body part while sleeping. However, these bite marks may take as long as 14 days to develop in some people so it is important to look for other clues when determining a bed bug infestation. A more accurate way to identify a possible infestation is to look for physical signs of bed bugs. When cleaning, changing bedding, or staying away from home, look for:

Bed bugs will typically hide near sleeping areas like the mattress, box spring, bedding, bed frame, headboard, baseboard, night stand, electrical outlet cover, phone jacks, picture frames, peeling wallpaper, couch, recliner, any small crack or crevice and near where people sleep or rest making it difficult to get rid of bed bugs.

When not feeding, bed bugs hide in a variety of places. Around the bed, they can be found near the piping, seams and tags of the mattress and box spring, and in cracks on the bed frame and headboard.

If the room is heavily infested, you may find bed bugs:

Since bed bugs are only about the width of a credit card, they can squeeze into really small hiding spots. If a crack will hold a credit card, it could hide a bed bug.

If you suspect that you have bed bugs, contact a pest control professional immediately to have a bed bug inspection of your residence. Bed bugs are not a do-it-yourself pest. Bed bugs are very difficult to control. When a bed bug infestation is discovered, there are multiple methods for control. Be aware that it will take time and patience; there is no quick fix for control. Both chemical and non-chemical approaches are available. Bed bugs reproduce rapidly. The longer you delay in calling in a professional the more widespread the infestation will become. The larger the infestation, the longer it will take to control and the more difficult it may be.

A female bed bug can lay up to 5 eggs a day and 500 over the course of a complete lifecycle. It only takes a matter of weeks for a few bugs contained to a single bed to multiply into a full-blown infestation. Most infestations begin in a single bedroom and quickly spread outwards into surrounding furniture and other areas of the house. With bed bugs, a singular bug is already a problem and immediate action is the only way to stop it from becoming a much more difficult one.

Any metropolitan centre carries a greater risk of the harbouring and transference of insect populations. Bed bugs thrive anywhere there is high population density and a lack of understanding or concern for their existence. A large portion of individuals (one in three) dont show any signs of bed bug bites, which makes the insect's detection all the more unlikely. When infestations are allowed to develop freely, their potential transference from unit to unit or person to person increases significantly.

In the early stages of an infestation, it's highly likely that there are only a few and more commonly, a solitary adult specimen. Finding a single bug can be difficult for both residents and trained professionals alike. They are so we have invested extensive research and time into creating inspection methods that simply have not been paralleled. If you've been waking up with bites marks and are unsure what's causing them, contact us to schedule an inspection.

Throwing out any furniture (unless for cosmetic purposes) is not only unnecessary but in some cases counter-intuitive. Bed bugs do not penetrate into fabrics or burrow, they remain on the surfaces of any objects they have infested. This does not mean getting rid of a bed bug problem isnt difficult in cases where there are folds and crevasses that allow for more intricate shelters. Using a protective cover can be beneficial but unless warranted we tend to stray away from their use as it simply acts as another surface for the bugs to live on. We use the most advanced residual spray in conjunction with various other control techniques to erase any concern of concealed bugs, as their movement out of these hiding places will result in continued control on contact.

Though it is possible for bed bugs to infest numerous materials and objects within your home,it is highly unlikely that an infestation has initially taken place outside direct sleeping or living quarters. Beds, couches and other furniture are the initial points of contact for any bed bug population as they are the most practical "homes"for their continued survival. Other furniture and objects tend to be infested only after the population on the the beds and other furniture has crossed a critical threshold. Our treatment will systematically exterminate, all bugs and eggs, regardless of where they might located in your home.

Bed Bug Forum Portland Oregon – Bed Bugs Northwest

In August (last month) Portland Public Health Vector Control hosted a forum on Bed Bugs. As I have been in contact (sending links/articles/rants) with Public Health throughout my ordeal, I was contacted and asked to speak at the forum as a former victim of you know who.

There were about 50 people from various organizations and businesses present, mostly folks who work in public housing, social services, shelters, hotels. Sprague Pest Control was there with April the bed bug sniffing dog.

I was able to tell my own personal story of torment and redemption (no bites or bugs seen since May 2009) and created a slide show that showed what my little house looked like before (lots of fabric decoration, clutter, think the Adams Family parlor crammed into 416 sq feet) and after (more austere, metal bed, legs in bowls of Murphy Oil) my bed bug accessories; dry vapor steamer, packtite, and a list of my favorite poisons from my various treatments. I also brought my little bed bug I keep in a plastic bag in my freezer for show and tell and passed it around thinking it would help with identification.

It was great to be part of what I hope is the beginning of public education about bed bugs in Oregon. This was about a week prior to the Bed Bug Symposium in Seattle. My next project will be to work with Public Health to develop a task force with printed and web guidelines on what to do and not do if you find yourself in the unfortunate situation of dealing with bed bugs.

Bed Bugs in the Washington DC Area | Capital K9 Bed Bug

At Capital K9 Bed Bug Solutions, we keep up on news stories around the nation relating to bed bugs.

Over the last few weeks, there have been a number of stories that highlight what researchers have been saying for years: bed bugs are hitchhikers and can show up just about anywhere.

To illustrate this point, here are some of the stories that were featured over the past few weeks:

Silver Nugget Restaurant in Las Vegas closed for 24-hours due to bed bugs

Bed Bugs discovered on Chicagos commuter train

Man bitten by bed bug on Walmart scooter

Bed bugs found in movie theater

School trip cut short by bed bug infestation

Most of the time, our clients are able to track the source of the bed bug infestation, but often people just have no idea where the bugs originated.

While the news stories above are not local stories, there is no reason to believe that bed bugs wouldnt be interested in visiting restaurants, movie theaters, and commuter trains in the Washington D.C., Maryland and Northern Virginia.

Actually, we live in an area that ranks higher on the list of bed bug infested cities than some of the cities featured above. Indeed, bed bugs in the Washington DC area statistics make DC the 2nd highest infested metropolitan area after Baltimore.

So what can you do, given that almost all of us spend time in public places? The only real answer is to live your life knowing that the odds of the average person getting bed bugs is still slim in spite of the fact that bed bugs are among us.

While you may not be able to prevent a bed bug introduction, early detection is the key. If you ever experience unexplained bites, small black or red stains on the sheets or bedframe or actually see a bug, it should not be ignored.

Simple monitoring is a great first step for many people if you havent seen a bug or black stains on bedding or furniture (check the box spring!) and are unsure.

However, if the problem persists and if you see the black stains or an actual bug, calling a professional is the next step.

Bottom line, dont live in fear of bed bugs but a general awareness of the problem is helpful in ensuring that a bed bug introduction does not become a full-blown infestation.
