It gets worse: cockroaches also found at bed bug infested government office in Ottawa – CTV News

CTVNewsOttawa.ca Staff Published Friday, October 4, 2019 10:30PM EDT Last Updated Saturday, October 5, 2019 10:56AM EDT

The news keeps getting worse for government workers at 350 King Edward Avenue. In addition to a bed bug infestation, the government will also spray for cockroaches on Sunday, October 6th.

An email sent to all occupants of the building warns that "the 3rd floor kitchenette will be treated for cockroaches". Employees will not have access to the kitchen during treatment and it will be tarped off, according to the email.

Shared Services Canada says the building is still operating, and is safe for employees.

A spokesperson for the federal agency says bed bugs were found at 18 work stations on three floors of their building at 350 King Edward Avenue. The first confirmation came Sept. 14.

SSC says the building was treated a week later on September 21, with another treatment the next day.Special traps were placed around the affected areas. A spokesperson says the most recent inspection was negative for bedbug activity. A complete inspection of the building will take place later this month.

But in an email to CTV News, an employee who works at the building, who wants to remain anonoymous, says this is not a new problem.

"Dealing with pests in this building is nothing new for us. Bed bugs were first reported and treated on the first floor of the building in March and April 2018".

Late Friday, the government confirmed bedbugs were first detected at 350 King Edward in late March of 2018. The government says they detected another infestation in September of 2018, and then again in August of this year.

Workers at the building -- both civil servants and contractors -- were moved to different work stations that were deemed bed bug free after the latest infestation. SSC says employees were also offered additional assistance, through the employee assistance programand through info sessions for staff and contractors. They were also given materials from Ottawa Public Health on how to prevent the spread of bedbugs.

Bed bugs were virtually eradicated in North America in the 1950s, but made a resurgence in the late 1990s.

Bed bugs shut down Pa. school district and parents are biting mad – PennLive

Students in a western Pa. school district are getting an extended weekend due to a bed bug infestation, but parents must check whether their kids are infected.

It is happening in the Clairton City School District in Allegheny County, which closed early Thursday and is shuttered Friday -- all due to bed bugs, as KDKA and WPXI in Pittsburgh report.

The school district is asking parents to inspect their childrens belongs including their backpacks and clothing for the quickly multiplying critters. Parents are being told to keep their kids home if they are infected.

But many parents and some students are biting mad that this is happening at all, as WPXI reports.

The school closure will allow exterminators to come in to spray inside classrooms and common areas. Multiple classrooms and all common areas are affected and will be treated, KDKA says.

Meanwhile, all district classes and after school activities have been canceled Thursday and Friday.

However, the home football game at at Neil C. Brown Stadium will go on as scheduled at 7 p.m.

Right now, the plan is for classes to resume on Monday. But those pesky bed bugs may have other ideas.

Bedbugs Found In Cases Of Student-Issued iPads In St. Paul – WCCO | CBS Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) After bedbugs were found in iPads issued to students, St. Paul Public Schools is asking students and parents to keep the devices clean.

WCCOS Kate Raddatz shares how many were affected and what you can do to keep your tablet bug-free.

In a letter that went home to families in the St Paul Public School District officials warned parents of dirty iPad protector cases after a spokesperson said bed bugs were discovered in five district-issued tablets.

It was kind of gross, one student said.

Shes a junior at Como Park High School but was not one of the students who had a bed bug issue with their tablet, which are used for school work throughout the year.

Everyone gets an iPad at the beginning of the year and then we return them at the end of the year, but students were supposed to clean them at the end of the year but you dont have to take your case off, the student added.

Thats why the district encouraged students to take their tablets out of their cases to thoroughly clean the case and keyboard with a window cleaner to kill any bacteria.

In a statement to WCCO a spokesperson for St Paul Public Schools said in part:

There is no indication of the presence of any additional pests in any other iPads. However, as the health and safety of our students are our highest priorities, we felt it was responsible and prudent to ask families to maintain the cleanliness of the devices.

Both high school and middle school students are allowed to bring their iPads home at the end of the day, while elementary school students do not.

A spokesperson for the district said there were 5 iPads affected out of the 17,000 they have in the district.

St. Paul schools say bedbugs have invaded some iPads – PostBulletin.com

ST. PAUL The discovery of bed bugs in five iPads prompted St. Paul Public Schools officials to issue a letter reminding parents and students to keep their devices clean.

We apologize for this situation and the inconvenience it has caused, said Kevin Burns, spokesman for the school district. There is no indication of the presence of any additional pests in any other iPads. However, as the health and safety of our students and staff are our highest priorities, we felt it was responsible and prudent to ask families to help maintain the cleanliness of the devices.

The iPads in question were found at Como High School, Burns said.

The letter, sent to all middle and high school families, gave the following instructions on cleaning the iPad, such as wiping the iPad down with window cleaner and disposing of the paper towels used in the process.

The iPads, used to support personalized learning in the classroom, were being distributed to students at the start of the school year.

What to Do Before And After The Exterminator Comes for Bedbugs

Many homeowners believe it is their fault that they have bedbugs at their place. First of all; know and understand that that is not the case. Bedbugs can enter your home in numerous ways and hitchhiking through guests luggage is the most common one. You can also get bed bugs from your neighbors especially if you live in close quarters or apartments. It is a good thing that you have scheduled a bed bug pest control treatment. The exterminator company you have enlisted will give you complete bed bug treatment preparation checklist. Additionally, do keep the following pointers in mind as part of bed bug preparation services.

You will need to shop for a few things before you begin to prepare for bed bug heat treatment or chemical pest control treatment. Here is a handy list:

Next is the most important bed bug checklist for tenants and homeowners:

Start collecting fabrics in each and every room you are planning on treating. Collect the bed-sheets, covers, throws, rugs, curtains, and all other bedding items in the trash bags. Seal the bags and place them outside. You will need to take them to the commercial cleaners/Laundromat to wash them. If you are planning on washing them at home, then make sure the fabrics can withstand high heat, detergent and mild bleach. If not, you will need to wash the delicate ones with hand. Toss the rest of the items in the washer with mild bleach and detergent and wash them on the highest setting. After the wash cycle, you will need to dry the items on the hottest setting the fabrics can withstand. Once dry, seal the clean items in bags. You will not use them until your home has been completely treated. So place the clean items in a bed bug free area such as the bathroom, garage or another home.

Remove all the clutter from the rooms before the exterminators come to treat the house. You can throw away infested items and place useful ones in trash bags. If the items are not delicate (such as non electronic stuff), freeze them. You can also place the items outside in the sun. If you are planning to discard infested furniture, label it as Bed Bug Infested so no one will pick it up. You can also slash/destroy them if needed or at least wrap them up in plastic before disposal.

If possible, move the furniture away from the walls so that the exterminators can access hard to reach areas behind it.

The kitchen is one area where bed bugs may not appear. Nevertheless, you should follow precautions and clean and prepare this area as well. Bed bug extermination can also get rid of bugs in the kitchen area so it makes sense to prep it as well.

Allow the exterminators to do their job. Make sure you do not have any expensive stuff lying about. Lock all cupboards and cabinets. You can choose to go away for a few hours while the pest control team does their job. It is important to remove pets to safety. Kids and elderly people can get affected by fumes of the chemical bed bug treatment as well as bed bug bombs. So it is important to make arrangement for them elsewhere.

Once the treatment is over, use mattress encasements and vinyl pillow covers to cover up the bedding. You will need to keep them sealed for a year to ensure that all trapped bugs die off due to starvation.

As a part of the bed bug treatment preparation checklist, observe the following dos and donts:

We hope these tips help you prep up for the exterminator.
