Bed bugs have long been a pest feeding on blood, causing itchy bites and generally irritating their human hosts. They are successful hitchhikers and can move from an infested site to furniture, bedding, baggage, boxes and clothing.

Although they typically feed on blood every five to ten days, bed bugs can be quite resilient, living for several months without feeding.

The common bed bug is Cimex lectularius.

Bed bugs produce 5-7 eggs per week and can lay up to 500 over the course of their life. They grow fastest and lay the most eggs at 80 degrees F. Learn more about the bed bug life cycle.

Although bed bugs are not known to transmit disease, their presence may cause distress and health issues for many people.

The following health issues are associated with infestations of bed bugs:

State of Bed Bug problems around the world… | Health …

I can completely sympathise with the traumas caused by bed bugs.I spent 19 months travelling through India, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Burma and Nepal in 2007/8 and didn't encounter them once until I reached Australia and ended up renting a place in Melbourne that was infested with them. Quite a few other folks I met in Melbourne who were staying in hostels also seemed to be being munched on on a nightly basis during their stay, too, so I'm not sure if Melbourne has a particular problem or if it was just bad luck. That said, on subsequent visits to India, although I haven't encountered them anywhere else, quite a few hostels/hotels in Mumbai seem to have infestations. I will also add that throughout our stays in each of these bed bug-inhabited places, my husband hasn't been bitten once, whereas there were occasions in Melbourne when I had as many as 30 bites on at any one time, so I have concluded that as is the case with mosquitoes, some people are just more attractive to the bugs, so just because you haven't been bitten, doesn't mean that there weren't any bugs there!

Most people usually discover they have bed bugs after they have been bitten. When they scratch the bites, rashes might appear. Bed bug bites are often in clusters of 3 to 5 bites. Not everyone reacts to bed bug bites or develops a rash after scratching. This makes it hard to find where the bugs are coming from in an apartment building.

Bed bugs leave what looks like dried blood stains after they bite. First check the sheets on your beds. Then check your mattresses, especially in the seams along the edges. Look for small brownish-red specks. You can see adult bed bugs, especially after they have eaten.

Bed bugs do not usually walk around in the open unless there are large numbers of them. They like to hide in places like mattresses, between cushions, and in cracks, baseboards and floor boards, until they are ready to eat again.

A local housing inspector can come to your apartment and inspect for bed bugs. Or you can hire a professional pest management company (exterminators) to inspect. You will get something in writing that says there are bed bugs in your rental.

Once you find out you have bed bugs, you must act fast to keep them from spreading and to get rid of them.
