Bed Bug Extermination Controversy Nearing Resolution

Valley View apartments in Caneyville have a bed bug problem.

Resident Paula Goldsberry said several people in complex have said the same thing.

"The exterminator came down and found them in seven apartments, live in broad daylight. So, the infestations are pretty bad, because if they're going to find them like that. They've had to have been there more than just a couple weeks," said Goldsberry.

One local extermination company says it's part of a growing trend.

"Two years ago, we might treat one every couple weeks, now we're treating them everyday. The numbers have just multiplied," said Wheeldon Company Owner Garry Wheeldon.

The issue at valley view is who will pay for the extermination.

Several of the tenants said they were told the company that runs Valley View, Homeland Inc, that they would have to pay for it even though the lease says the landlord and management will take care of the bugs.

"I will not pay nobody nothing, because just like her I have the contract and it says exterminations, their supposed to furnish us," said tenant, Roy Hiles.

"It doesn't say nothing about bed bugs, any type of insect. It just says they provide extermination as needed," said Goldsberry.

"I really don't know. I called them, and they said I had to pay for it. I'm going to be out about $800 because I have to have somebody to help me, and I just can't do it," said tenant, Jean Daugherty.
