Bed bugs are year-round small insects that feed on human blood. They are usually active at night when people are sleeping. They have flat, rusty-red colored oval bodies, no wings and are about the size of an apple seed. They are big enough to be easily seen, but hide in mattresses, box springs, bedding, cracks in furniture, floors, or walls. When bed bugs feed, they swell and become brighter red. They can live for several months to over a year without feeding. They don't jump or fly, and they crawl and move about the same speed as an ant. Below are some commonly asked questions about bed bugs: WHAT DO BED BUGS LOOK LIKE? In any infestation, you will find bed bugs in several stages of development. An adult bed bug is relatively easy to see as it is about the size of an apple seed, and resembles the shape of a small tick. It is in the juvenile stages that bed bugs are hardest to see. In the first stage from the egg, they have no color and will blend in with their surroundings. After their first blood meal, they will have a dark brownish color but still be tiny - about the size of a large piece of sand.

Most people do not know that they have a bed bug problem until after they have been bitten. Bed bugs hide in cracks and crevices during the day where they can remain unseen; they traditionally come out at night to feed. Bed bugs can fit in a crevice the width of a playing card, and reportedly they can live for a year or more without feeding. They hide in places like mattresses, box springs, headboards, upholstered items. baseboards, wall voids and in cluttered surroundings.

Nearly all of us have heard the saying before, typically when we were children, and most of us believed that bed bugs were nothing more than a myth. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Bed bugs, Cimex lectularius, have become a huge problem in recent years for many businesses in the United States; including hotels, office buildings, movie theatres, multi-family dwellings, and even for residential homeowners. They are elusive, difficult to find, and very resilient, making them much more difficult to control than other common household pests.

Bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed on blood, and as the name indicates typically are found in or near areas where humans sleep, or spend extended periods of time, such as couches, and office chairs, or even auditorium seating in movie theatres, and other similar situations. They are nocturnal in nature, typically coming out at night to feed, but will adapt quickly to their surroundings and adjust their feeding patterns to feed in the daytime if necessary. Bed bugs can cause multiple health issues, including severe rashes, allergic reactions, sleep loss, and other psychological effects.

Woman claims bed bugs bit her while at Hollywood movie theater

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. -

There are new complaints about bed bugs at the Regal Cinemas Oakwood 18 movie theater. In October, a more than a dozen moviegoers contacted Local 10 to claiming they were bitten by bed bugs while watching a movie at the theater.

At the time, spokesman for Regal Cinemas told Local 10 they were aware of the complaints, and that a pest control company had been hired and periodic inspections would be conducted to ensure they safety of guests.

The latest complaint comes from a woman who wanted to be anonymous but included a picture of what appear to be bed-bug bites on her back.

She said it happened last Saturday in theater No. 17. That's one of the same theaters in which several other moviegoers told Local 10 they too were eaten alive.

"Not only was it the back of my legs, it was the side of legs. It was both legs, and then it started coming all the way down to my arms," Sheylana Santanilla told Local 10's Roger Lohse in October.

Lohse attempted to speak with an on-site theater manager about the new complaints, but was told to contact the corporate office in Tennessee and then he was kindly asked to leave the property.

Lohse reported that he did see a pest control worker leaving the theater when he arrived there Wednesday morning. And despite the reports he did in October, he said he recently took his family to the theater to see a movie, and that none of them were bitten.

Local 10's calls to Regal Cinemas corporate office were not returned.

Bed bugs infest as many as one in 10 households, and while infestations peak during the summer, many homes may still have a bed bug problem in the winter. Here with the signs of infestation and prevention tips is Dr. Tedd Mitchell.

Bed bugs, those critters your mother warned you about at night are real, and infestation is on the rise. Some people have severe reactions to bed bug bites, but many have no reaction at all. Since bed bugs only come out to bite after dark, they may go undetected for long periods of time, eventually infesting other furniture, clothing and multiple apartments within a complex. Here are some tips for detecting and preventing bed bugs in your home.

Check your bed frequently. Look for the small reddish-brown bugs with a flashlight at night. Newly hatched bugs are smaller than a stitch hole and may not be seen with the naked eye. However, adult bed bugs can grow to the size of an apple seed.

Travel smart. According to a study by the University of Kentucky, nearly 100 percent of hotels and motels will have a problem with bed bugs at one time or another. Check for bed bugs before you take your clothes out of your luggage and go to sleep. When you get home after a trip, wash all of your laundry from traveling immediately with warm water, and do not mix it with the rest of your laundry.

Remove clutter. Experts believe that the majority of infestations originate because the home is messy. It is important to wash laundry and not let it pile up on the floor, put on fresh bedding regularly and remove barriers from upholstered furniture that may leave it unused for long periods of time.

Winter is not the prime season for bed bugs, but it is a great time to take steps to prevent future infestations in the warmer months. Resolve to remove clutter and clean furniture and bedding now. If you suspect you have a problem, call an expert immediately or the infestation may get worse. For maintaining good health, I'm Dr. Tedd Mitchell.
