City Council Puts Bed Bug Problem Under Microscope

By Mike Dunn

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) There was plenty of squirming in City Council chambers this morning, as lawmakers convened a hearing on the vexing problem of bed bugs and how hard they are to exterminate in a city of row homes.

The problem is real, and its only getting worse, said Martin Overline of Aardvark Pest Management.

Overline was one of the exterminators who came before city council bugged by bed bugs. He told of one recluse whose home he visited.

I saw literally hundreds of bed bugs in his front window, he said. Thats just in his window, thats not even counting whats in his bedroom. He wouldnt allow nobody in his house. But unfortunately for the neighbors and the rowhouses next to him, three on each side now have activity in their homes now from bed bugs from this gentleman.

Bed bugs are wingless insects that feed on human blood and can be found not just in beds and box springs, but even in drawers, couches and electrical outlets. Dr. Palak Raval-Nelson, director of Environmental Health Services for the city Health Department, said eradicating bed bugs is no easy task.

You have to de-clutter, you have to find the source of the bed bugs, she said, and wherever possible find somebody to help you with the problem.

Michelle Niedermeier of the Philadelphia office of the Pennsylvania Integrated Pest Management program testified that many residents dont know what to do.

Residents often seek the cheapest and most readily available materials, including insect foggers, boric acid dust, bleach, detergent, rubbing alcohol and moth balls, Niedermeier said. All of these are ineffective in managing bed bugs and many can be harmful or even dangerous.

The DMV area is struggling with an ever-growing bed bug problem. Environmental Heat Solutions offers a solid solution.

Bed bugs are on the rise in Washington, D.C., and the surrounding states of Virginia and Maryland. As of 2012, D.C. ranked number six on a list of the most infested cities in the country. While still not as bad as New York City, D.C.s problem seems to be growing.

Getting rid of bed bugs has become increasingly difficult for a variety of reasons, according to a representative from Environmental Heat Solutions. Over-the-counter solutions to bed bugs may once have been effective, but studies show they do not work today. This is likely a result of bed bugs high ability to develop resistance to pesticides. Additionally, the pest is notoriously difficult to eradicate as a result of its propensity to hide in hard to reach places. Bed bugs can also remain dormant without feeding for a very long time; some claim an infested mattress can be dangerous for well over a year.

Bed bugs have also become highly resistant to chemicals used by professional exterminators. This is why Environmental Heat Solutions offers a different approach to eliminating an infestation: bed bug heat treatment. By evenly raising the temperature in someones home to 120 degrees, our heat treatments kill all adult and juvenile bed bugs, as well as their eggs, said a representative from Environmental Heat Solutions.

Our treatments are safer and more effective than pesticide treatments, said the spokesperson. Heat treatment for bed bugs only takes a few hours and completely eliminates any infestation. It is also completely safe for humans, as it uses no chemicals.

A bed bug infestation is easiest to eliminate if its caught early. We also offer canine detection services to determine if an infestation is present, said the spokesperson.

Bed bugs are a problem, but they dont have to be a disaster, the spokesperson said. At Environmental Heat Solutions, we prioritize getting people back to their normal lives as quickly as possible, with no more worrying about bed bugs.

Bed Bug Physiology, Biology, and Behavior | Bed Bugs

Benoit, J. 2011.

Stress tolerance of bed bugs: A review of factors that cause trauma to Cimex lectularius and C. hemipterus. Insects 2: 151172.

A review of the literature concerning the different kinds of stresses that bed bugs encounter including dehydration, high humidity, temperature extremes, blood feeding, traumatic insemination (mating), microbial infections, and pesticide exposure. Their ability to resist stressful conditions has led to their expansion and proliferation.

Domingue, M. J., M. Kramer, and M. F. Feldlaufer. 2010.

Sexual dimorphism of arrestment and gregariousness in the bed bug (Cimex lectularius) in response to cuticular extracts from nymphal exuviae. Physiological Entomology 35: 203213.

Researchers described bed bug gregariousness and arrestment behavior (settling near the odor source) in response to chemical extracts from the shed skins (exuviae) of other bed bugs (conspecifics). Adult males and females exhibited different behaviors. Adult males settled near the extracts from fifth stage nymphs, whereas adult females grouped together without any tendency to assemble near the odor source.

Eaten alive by bed bugs

MOORHEAD, M.N. -- Some Moorhead residents in the Sharp View Apartments aren't too happy with the latest visitors. In the past week residents have found and documented over 10 bed bugs!

One resident told us she had to miss out on her familys Thanksgiving with her 100-year-old mother, because her loved ones didn't want to risk the chance of getting any bugs. Some said they feel a prisoner in their own home and think management isn't doing enough.

"Nobody can sleep, said John Johnson. It's a psychological problem as much as it is a physical problem."

Most fear going to bed to wake up finding red spots from these pesky pests all over their body.

Many are concerned for their health, but afraid to speak against management. The executive director of Moorhead Public Housing Authority said these bugs have been a problem since the beginning of November.

"Since then, we have sprayed the common areas of the building two times, all the common area furniture, every unit in the building, and everything was chemically treated, said Sally Roe, the executive director at Moorhead Public Housing Authority.

Despite the attempts to kill these pests that have out-stayed their welcome, a chemical treatment may not be enough. Fargo Cass Public Health told us these critters have built immunity to the chemicals used since the last scare a few years ago. Now, theyre back in the F-M area. The only way to rid them once and for all is a heat treatment.

"Two apartments of the 47 have been heat treated, said Roe.

The goal: to treat all apartments in the next three months. But, residents said it's not good enough, killing the bugs in one room at a time won't prevent them from spreading.

"The first thing in our lease it says you're entitled to a safe, clean, sanitary place to live and we're not getting that, said Johnson.
