Chicago Tops Bed Bug Cities List for Third Year in a Row

Bed bug business increased 18 percent last year with nearly half of cities showing a rise in bed bug treatments

News Release from Orkin, January, 2015

Chicago tops the 2014 Bed Bug Cities List for the third year in a row. The list, released by pest control leader Orkin, ranks the cities by the number of bed bug treatments Orkin performed from January to December 2014. Bed bugs were in the news throughout 2014 in the Windy City, with reports of the blood-sucking insects on public transit and inside several downtown office buildings, as well as in police headquarters, a fire station, school, library and movie theater.

Bed bugs are a serious issue across the country, and theyre very difficult to control, said Orkin Entomologist and Technical Services Director Ron Harrison, Ph.D. Bed bugs are not limited to any level of cleanliness or income, which means they can be found in any home or hotel. Theyre great hitchhikers, and people often bring them inside on their clothes or in their luggage.

Seven cities made double-digit jumps on Orkins Bed Bug Cities List compared to 2013, including Omaha, Neb. (+16), Lexington, Ky. (+16), Sacramento, Calif. (+14), Grand Rapids, Mich. (+13), Buffalo, N.Y. (+12), Charleston, W.Va. (+11) and Louisville, Ky. (+10). Several cities also dropped significantly in the past year, including Syracuse, N.Y., San Diego, Miami, Greenville, S.C. and Atlanta. Four cities made the Bed Bug Cities List for the first time including Myrtle Beach, S.C., St. Louis, Bowling Green, Ky. and Ft. Wayne, Ind.

Bed bugs are in every region of the country, and Orkin has treated for bed bugs in all 50 states. Rollins saw an 18 percent increase in bed bug revenue in 2014. The problem is growing nationwide as well. According to an annual report on the pest control industry, Americans spent $446 million to get rid of bed bugs in 2013, the latest data available, compared to $70 million in 2004.

While the cities above topped Orkins list, homeowners, tenants and travelers across the country should take the following precautions to help prevent bed bugs:

Bed bugs are not known to spread human disease like many other pests, but can leave itchy, bloody welts on skin, and they are active year-round. Because every bed bug scenario is different, its important for homeowners to call a professional who can create a solution tailored to their homes needs.

Myrtle Beach, Florence among top cities with bed bugs …

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) Myrtle Beach and Florence are among the top 50 cities with bed bugs, according to a list issued by a pest control company.

The list, released by pest control leader Orkin, ranks the cities by the number of bed bug treatments Orkin performed from January to December 2014.

Bed bugs are a serious issue across the country, and they're very difficult to control, said Orkin Entomologist and Technical Services Director Ron Harrison, Ph.D. Bed bugs are not limited to any level of cleanliness or income, which means they can be found in any home or hotel. They're great hitchhikers, and people often bring them inside on their clothes or in their luggage.

Myrtle Beach and Florence was ranked number 45 on the list by Orkin.

Orkin said this was the first time the Grand Strand-Pee Dee cities made the Bed Bug Cities List.

The following tips to prevent and treat bed bugs were suggested by pest control experts at Orkin:

At Home:

Inspect your home for signs of bed bugs regularly. Check locations where bed bugs hide during the day, including in furniture, mattress seams and bed sheets, as well as behind baseboards, electrical outlets and picture frames.

Decrease clutter around your home to make bed bug inspections and detection much easier.

Inspect and quarantine all secondhand furniture before bringing it inside your home.

Worst cities for bed bugs: Grand Rapids-Kalamazoo crawling …

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Bed bugs are apparently gaining ground in Michigan, according to pest control company Orkin, which issued its list of the top 50 worst cities when it comes to bed bug infestations.

Detroit climbed two spots to second place on the 2015 list, behind Chicago. Last year, Michigans largest city ranked third for cities with the largest increase in infestations on a list put out by Terminix, another national pest control company.

But these blood-sucking insects are on the rise on the west side of the state as well, according to Orkin.

Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Battle Creek tied for the 20th spot on 2015 list, moving the region up 13 places in the national ranking.

The Atlanta-bases exterminator says the list is based on data from cities where Orkin performed the most bed bug treatments in 2014.

Overall, the country is in the midst of a bed bug resurgence, with Americans spending $446 million to get rid of bed bugs in 2013, compared to $70 million 10 years ago, according to industry data.

Trying to quantify the problem locally is difficult.

The Kent County Health Department does not monitor bed bug complaints because they are not considered a public health threat, said Lisa LaPlante, the countys communications director.

I would definitely say there has been an increase, said David Popp, with Rose Pest Control Solutions. Theres has been a steady increase over the last five or six years.

The Troy-based company, located in states across the Midwest and the South, has offices across Michigan in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Niles, Saginaw and Metro Detroit.

We're Number 1…For Bed Bugs, Third Year In A Row

We love a high ranking here in Chicago, from top museums to best hot dogs to parades for our #1 sports teams, we pride ourselves on being a "world class city," as our Mayor likes to say ad nauseam. But one ranking we've earned for the third year in a row only has our skin crawling instead of celebrating.

A recent ranking by bug and pest combatants Orkin named Chicago number one on their list of top 50 worst cities for bed bugs. For the third year in a row. This comes only months after Orkin named us the "rattiest city," with the most rodent treatments performed over a period of 12 months.

As NBC5 Chicago reports, Orkin ranked U.S. cities by the number of bed bug treatments they performed last year. Treatments were reported in our city at a number of places that make us want to hide in a sterile environment and never interact with another human ever again a school, library, movie theater, public transit vehicles, police headquarters and your generic downtown office buildings, according to Orkin.

Ron Harrison, an Orkin entomologist and director of technical services, had this horrifying news to say about bed bugs:

So basically no one is safe. Thanks for the nightmares, Ron.

Orkin reported an 18 percent increase in the bed bug business last year, showing that nationwide there was an increase in treatments, with Americans spending much more in recent years. In 2013, the U.S. spent $446 million on bed bug treatments, a significant increase from just $70 million a little under a decade ago in 2004.

Rounding out the top five cities after Chicago were Detroit; Columbus, Ohio; Los Angeles and the Cleveland, Akron and Canton, Ohio area.

Orkin does have some tips for helping to keep your home as bed bug free as possible. They suggest you inspect your home regularly, checking locations where bed bugs hide during the day including furniture, mattress seams, bed sheets, behind baseboards, electrical outlets and picture frames. Decreasing clutter in your home will also make inspecting for bed bugs easier. Make sure to dry potentially infected fabrics like bed linens, curtains and stuffed animals on the highest temperature setting allowed for each of those fabrics.

If you are traveling, a prime scenario where bud bugs like to hitch a ride home with you, Orkin has a handy "S.L.E.E.P." method to use. Survey the hotel room for signs of infestation, Lift and look in bed bug hiding spots, Elevate luggage on a rack away from the bed and walls, Examine your luggage while repacking, and Place all dryer-safe materials from your luggage in the dryer at the highest setting for 15 minutes when you return home.

So remember, keep your shit clean, go all Nancy Drew on any hotel room you stay in and constantly scrutinize any small fleck of dust that could be a bed bug and try not to freak out. And if you end up winning the worst lottery ever and acquiring bed bugs, deal with it as quickly as possible. And realize that it will suck, since we've seen a few friends go through this scenario before.
