5 Worst House Pests and How To Eliminate Them – theseeker.ca

The thought of having house bugs disgusts and scares us all, and unfortunately, they could easily take over your entire place, acting as if you are the unwanted visitor. However, what most of us dont realize is that not all pests are just repulsive, some can be dangerous too.

With summer just a few months away, you need to know who your worst enemies are and how to get rid of them.

Every one of us can get bed bugs, we can pick them from the cinema, the metro, anywhere and its becoming a very common problem nowadays. However, there are steps you can take on your own to eliminate the bugs, from spraying bed bug spray to heat treatments. However, according to this blog post https://www.custombedbug.com/blog/5-effective-ways-to-get-rid-of-bed-bugs-fast-in-portland-oregon/, getting help from an exterminator is your best option to make sure that they wont reappear so easily. Most experts really encourage not handling this problem on your own as bed bugs, despite what they are called, can also live in your walls or other parts of the house which only a professional eye can locate.

Ants are the worst, they get in your food, your clothes and they bite, leaving you itchy and red. Now moping around wont do much since ants leave a trail behind them that others can smell. Thats why spraying the trail or using ant bait could help with minimizing your ant problem, plus it keeps your house as clean as possible. Nevertheless, you need to identify them first, knowing your enemy is your best strategy!

Ticks are very dangerous as they carry Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and others. Ticks are hard to spot as they are smaller than you think, with the biggest being the size of a sesame seed. Unfortunately, the best way to get rid of them is by using tweezers. With a pair of tweezers, slowly pull them from your skin without killing the tick, since killing them might cause an infection. Then put them in some rubbing alcohol to kill them or put them in a jar to show your doctor.

The bloodsucking and disease-transmitting flying insects are everywhere and even if you bathe in bug repellent, you could still get bitten. Having a clean house though will give you amazing results. Plus drain any unnecessary water pools either outside your house or inside since mosquitoes lay their eggs in water and only need 10 days to fully grow.

Fruit flies as all other bugs and insects are attracted to sticky, unclean surfaces, thats why you need to sweep once you spill anything because they will appear out of nowhere and invite their whole family with them as well. Check your fruit daily, as female fruit flies lay their eggs in overripe fruit. If you, unfortunately, get the fruit flies, just fill a jar with some apple cider vinegar, then cover it with plastic wrap and poke small holes into it. Once the fruit flies get inside the jar, they would not be able to escape.

When it comes to house pests your best defense is being clean and checking for their appearance regularly since they can invade your place in no time, especially during summer. Even though natural remedies do work on many occasions, calling a professional might save your entire house from pests and your family from diseases. So dont think twice if you feel that the task is beyond your skills, thats why we have these experts in the first place.

RealtimeCampaign.com Asks Does Home Insurance Cover Bed Bugs? Uncovering the Truth behind These Insects and Invasion Solutions – MENAFN.COM

(MENAFN - GetNews)

Good night. Sleep tight. Don't let the bed bugs bite. During much of the modern era, people generally considered this nothing more than a quirky phrase said to children while tucking them in at night. Looking deeper, though, most of those popular off-the-wall sayings evolved from a tiny grain of truth somewhere along the way. As several people have found out over the last twenty or thirty years, this one is no exception to the rule.

Looking at the History of Bed Bugs

Historical accounts indicate bed bugs have been around since ancient times. Fossilized examples dating back more than 3,000 years have been found in caves and archaeological sites across the globe. Initially, they weren't considered significant problems; in fact, some civilizations believed they held healing powers. Ancient Romans used them as a remedy for leeches, and Egyptians mixed them with liquid and drank them to combat the poison from snake bites.

As populations grew and spread, so did the bed bugs living amongst humans. They made their way around the world and soon became a serious issue. According to RealtimeCampaign.com and various scientific publications, the true nature of these tiny insects was soon discovered. They feed on humans and pets, drinking small amounts of their blood to stay alive. Contrary to what their names may indicate, these insects aren't limited to living in beds. Their colonies spread to carpet, upholstered furniture, spaces in between walls and virtually any other dark, relatively cool area where they can hide.

How Do Bed Bugs Spread?

Bed bugs can spread in several ways especially in hotels, hospitals, and apartment complexes. In places like these, they're known to make their way from one room to another while continually reproducing. These creatures also travel on used furniture, bedding, clothing and in other fabric. They commonly infest people's belongings in hotels and travel back home with them. Infestations can be unnerving, difficult to resolve and costly.

Are Infestations Covered by Insurance?

Because of the sheer volume of bed bugs infesting the world these days and the potential costs of getting rid of them, a number of people are asking, "Does Renters Insurance Cover Bed Bugs ?" Unfortunately, the short answer is no. Neither standard homeowner's or renter's insurance covers insect or animal invasions of any type. Due to the current prominence of infestations, some coverage providers are offering separate policies for such incidents.

Can Bed Bug Invasions Be Prevented?

While shopping around for Insurance Quotes to cover an infestation if it does occur, certain measures can be taken to prevent bed bugs from entering a space and keep them from spreading once they arrive. Experts recommend purchasing plastic coverings for mattresses. Vacuuming frequently and being sure to vacuum upholstered furniture, crevices underneath walls and in other tight spaces is also advised. While traveling, check hotel mattresses for bed bugs before sleeping on them. Also, keep clothing packed at hotels.

Bottom Line

Bed bugs can't be killed with over-the-counter sprays and other traditional means. In most cases, professional pest control measures are required once an invasion occurs. You can find additional info on these insects, preventative measures and reactive remedies online.

In the meantime, looking for an insurance policy designed to cover bed bugs may be helpful. Though some property managers and business owners are required to cover such occurrences, most aren't. This means taking matters into your own hands is certainly advisable.

What Causes Itching? – Scientific Reasons Behind Why We Itch – Prevention.com

Whether youre dealing with dry skin, a mosquito bite, or a full-blown allergic reaction, youve likely experienced your fair share of itchiness. But if youve ever wondered exactly what causes an itch (which is called pruritus to dermatologists), it can be a really complicated thing, admits Alix J. Charles, MD, a dermatologist and fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology.

While were all intimately familiar with what an itch feels like, the sensation is one of the least understood and researched in the dermatology world, per a recent article in Dermatologic Therapy.

Sometimes, discovering what causes itching is easy and obvious (the poison ivy you accidentally touched while gardening). Other times, its difficult to figure out whats causing that must-scratch-now sensation, says Dr. Charles.

Here, we break down why we itch, common causes behind itching, the reason scratching feels so satisfying, and what to do if your itch just wont go away, with expert insight from dermatologists.

Put simply, you itch because your skin has receptors called pruriceptors (itch-sensing nerve endings) which get stimulated and, in turn, cause that itchy feeling, explains Melanie Grossman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. As part of the immune response, your body releases substances called histamines, triggering the itch.

Theres a deep-rooted evolutionary advantage to the itch: Its your bodys way of letting you know ASAP that something (an allergen, a parasite like bed bugs or ticks, or a would-be intruder) is irritating your skin, the protective barrier between you and the outside world. Here are a few more common culprits:

Sometimes, chemicals inside your body can cause itchy skin, says Dr. Grossman. For example, medications like opioids come with the common side effect of itchy skin (possibly because of shared pain-itch neurons), and illnesses like kidney and liver disease can cause itchiness due to a build-up of toxins.

This comes from the release of the chemicals serotonin and norepinephrine, which can accompany anxiety, depression, and stress. If youre going through a period of stress like a death in the family or divorce, we will sometimes see people itching for that reason, explains Dr. Charles. Heat can make you itchy, too.

This rare cause of itching occurs when theres really nothing wrong with the skin at all, but the brain itself perceives itching somewhere, explains Dr. Charles. It happens when theres been damage to your nervous system (think: shingles, stroke, or even a burn injury).

Dry skin in need of some quality moisturizing can make you itch, says Dr. Charles. Skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis can also cause your skin to itch.

Essentially, scratching an itch feels good because it distracts you from the initial irritation with a new feeling. When you scratch an itch, youre actually creating a different sensation, which, depending on how hard you scratch it, could be severe or minimal pain, Dr. Grossman says. For a short period of time, this can also provide relief.

Of course, sometimes when you scratch an itch, you only exacerbate the need to itch due to the inflammation from scratching and the potential of creating new wounds on your skin. With more inflammation comes more itching.

The best treatment for itching is getting rid of the cause, says Dr. Grossman. After all: Its better to know what causes an itchwhether its your laundry detergent or dry skinthan simply scratching at its surface. Here, a few go-to home remedies and over-the-counter solutions for some of the most common itch triggers from the pros:

For dry skin: Avoid over-soaping itch-prone areas like your legs and lather up with a gentle moisturizing lotion, like this one from CeraVe.

For bug bites and other localized itching: Get rid of the source (as in, treat your dog for fleas or ditch your new detergent) and then try OTC solutions like 1 percent hydrocortisone anti-itch cream or calamine lotion for spot treatment.

For hives and allergy-induced itching: Take an OTC antihistamine like Benadryl. If that doesnt work, head for the dermatologist, says Dr. Charles.

For stress-induced itching: If you think your mental health could be at the root of your relentless itch, head to your doc for a proper ID. Along with stress management, medications for anxiety and depression could help relieve your itching.

For the mystery itch: If youve tried to address whats causing your itch (or you just cant figure it out), dont tackle your itch alone. Call your doctor or dermatologist for help, says Dr. Charles.

While you'll still need professional help, you can use these home remedies for bed bugs to help keep the pests at bay

You can find a lot of home remedies for bed bugs online, but no home remedy will completely clear your house of an infestation. These are all anecdotal and there is no scientific evidence to say they work, says Jody Green, PhD, an urban entomologist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Bed bugs are blood feeders, so it is difficult to trick them from detecting our carbon dioxide and the need for a blood meal. However, there are some methods that will help you keep the bugs at bay as your pest management company works to eradicate the bed bugs from your home.

This is a fine time to heed clutter-queen Marie Kondos advice to discard the things that dont give you joy: Bed bugs love clutter. Although the critters can thrive just as easily in immaculate homes, they have a preference for cluttered living areas. Stacks of boxes, piles of stuffed animals, overloaded bookshelves, and electronic equipment near your bed will give them even easier access to their meal (you). You might also miss the signs of an infestationhere are 8 clues youre about to be invadedif you have too much clutter.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a non-toxic dust that can kill bed bugs. It clings to the outside of their body, absorbing natural oils and moisture and fatally drying out the bugs. Its not an instant killerDE can take a few days or weeks to desiccate a bug. It works best in areas where insecticidal dust cant, like carpeting, cracks, crevices, and bed frames. Its tempting to start sprinkling DE everywhere, but that can be too much of a good thing. If DE is just scattered around the room everywhere, it will not work, advises Green. If it is piled high bed bugs will just walk over it, says Green. When you shop for DE, be sure to buy food grade version; the industrial version can be dangerous to you, your family, and pets.

Among common online home remedies for bed bugs is the myth is that you can kill them with a blow dryer. Even if your hair dryer gets hot enough (the lethal temperature is 120 degrees), youll end up blowing them around or scaring them into new hiding places and spreading your infestation. However, for bedding, bags, clothes, and other items that may have the bugs or eggs, you can toss them into your clothes dryer. Use the hottest setting for 30 minutes.

Of the home remedies for bed bugs that actually help, steam cleaning can wipe out all stages of bed bugs from egg to adult. Consider renting or buying a steam cleaning machine to use in combination with professional pest management treatment. Just remember that contact time with the bugs is critical for steam to do its job. According to the experts behind the Michigan Manual for the Prevention and Control of Bed Bugs, you should move the nozzle slowlyabout a pace of twenty seconds per linear footto maximize steam penetration and time of heat exposure.

Once youve steam cleaned, you can vacuum up the molted skins, dead bugs, and eggs, according to the Michigan experts. Use crevice tools to get into tight spaces where bed bugs might be hiding, and be sure to empty the vacuum bag into a trash bin outside. If the vacuum is bagless, theres a risk of the bugs crawling from the canister to other parts of the machine before you can empty it. Try inserting a knee-high hose inside the vacuum tube toe first, with the opening folded over the outside of the tube to hold it in place. That will trap bugs before they reach the canister, and then you can dump them in the trash outdoors. Also: Keep your vacuum securely wrapped in a garbage bag and inspect it for bed bugs between vacuum sessions. And make sure you know how to identify the pests: Heres what bed bugs look like, from egg to nymph to adult.

Talk about home remedies for bed bugs most people would never think of: You can freeze the critters to death if you keep your freezer at 0F, says the EPA. Entomologists at the University of Minnesota recommend freezing electronics (remove the batteryand dont freeze an LCD screen), jewelry, toys, shoes, and books to kill bugs. Place the items in tightly sealed plastic bags and leave them in the freezer for four days. In winter, you might be tempted to use the bitterly cold outdoors, but the fluctuation in temperature may allow the bugs to survive.

One of the home remedies for bed bugs you should skip is essential oils. They arent regulated as a pesticide, so there is no efficacy or safety data, says Green. While a recent Purdue study found that carvacrol (from oregano and thyme), thymol (from thyme), citronellic acid (from lemongrass), and eugenol (from cloves) could kill bed bugs, but it took 70,000 more of these compounds to do the job compared to a synthetic insecticide. But the researchers are optimistic that these substances could lead to new bed bug solutions. In the meantime, try these 16 expert tips for getting rid of bed bugs.
