(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.) Laundry is more than a chore these days at St. Joseph's Salvation Army Shelter.

It's become the frontline in a battle against bed bugs.

The shelter recently had to shut down for three months to wipe out a bed bug infestation. Now that the doors are back open, the shelter is trying to prevent another outbreak by stopping the bugs before they even come through the doors.

"They give you some hospital scrubs, then you take a shower, wash your clothes, run them through the dryer, fold them up, and you're all set," said Barry Meyer who currently lives at the shelter.

But that's just the first line of defense. The shelter also threw out mattresses in an effort to kill the bugs.

"The ones that were damaged were replaced. And, encasements are used now as a preventative measure," said Salvation Army Director Sheila Mendez.

Another preventative measure -- a bed bug sniffing dog. The specially trained dog visits the shelter once a month to help detect if the bugs have returned.

"It just stops and kind of looks up at the handler, like okay, here's one!" said Meyer.

The Salvation Army says its hasn't seen a sign of bed bugs in months.

The organization is now teaming up with Community Action Partnership for a life skills class to teach residents how to protect themselves from bed bugs in and out of the shelter.
