More bed bugs found on Guam – Marianas Variety Guam Edition

More bed bugs have been popping up on island.

Dr. Aubrey Moore, extension entomologist for the University of Guams College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, said hes been receiving samples every month from local pesticide companies.

Moore stressed, however, that the number of bed bugs is still not alarmingly high.

Moore gets at least one report of bed bugs every month or every two months. The bedbugs were found in hotels, private residences and apartment complexes on island.

In 2007, I got one sample. In 2008, I got two or three. In the last few years, it hasnt increased very much, he said.

There are two species the common bed bug and the tropical bed bug. The insects are flat, wingless, and reddish-brown. The bugs are about 1/8 to inch long and 1/8 inch wide.

They can be found in cracks, crevices, furniture, beneath loose wall paper, bed frames, and in the seams of mattresses. They are best known to come out at night and bite people who are sleeping.

The tropical bed bug is probably the most common on Guam, said Moore.

He further stated that there is a big bed bug population explosion in the mainland, but this is only limited to the common bed bug. Tropical

When we started getting them here, we thought we were getting them from travelers in the big cities, but then we found out we were getting the tropical bed bugs that are found in Florida and Hawaii or any warm climate. I was kind of surprised that most of our bed bugs are tropical bed bugs, he said.
