Family files $1.5M suit over reported bed bug infestation

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.

A Florida family is suing a rental company after they said they rented a bed that was infested with bed bugs.

The infestation they say was due to the bed rented from Aaron's Furnture was so bad the Teel-Hainey family said they had to throw out all their clothes and furniture.

Andre Teel said their dream home has turned into a nightmare.

"Every so often I'll come up and spray," he said.

He showed WTEV where bedbugs have infested his children's room and he said Aaron's is responsible.According to this agreement, the couple rented "preleased" beds from Aaron's in December.

Soon, their children became sick.

"They're giving her ointments, creams, nothing's helping," said Rebecca Hainey.

Hainey spotted a bed bug on the wall two months ago.Then, she said, she foundmore bed bugs and their eggsbehind built-in drawers under her son's mattress.

An Office of Mental Health in Albany in New York was recently scourged by bed bugs. News website timesunion.com relayed the details of it on its post dated June 04, 2014. Meanwhile, wanting to help the public kill bed bugs effectively without endangering anyone's health, My Cleaning Products suggested the use of the organic-based Bed Bug Bully.

According to the report, the critters particularly showed up in OMH's headquarters in Holland Avenue. And as it detailed, it left some people in the building with bites on their legs and ankles. It added that it also prompted employees to always turn their pockets inside out before going home to prevent the transfer of the pests to their houses.

The report relayed that OMH spokeswoman Kristin Salvi has confirmed the presence of the crawlies in the place. However, as it stated, she specified that the affected areas were confined spaces where OMH Design and some Office of Information Technology Services offices are located.

To resolve the issue, the post shared that a pest-control company was called-in to spray the building. It related that another round of spraying was also scheduled on the evening of June 3. Nonetheless, it said that workers were worried about the kind of pesticides used in the process.

"Bedbugs typically live in mattresses or in hidden spots within eight feet of where people sleep, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control."

"But they're also turning up in the Holland Avenue headquarters of the state Office for Mental Health."

Bed bugs are truly some of the most annoying pests one could ever come across with. However, My Cleaning Products said that a harsh chemical-based product is not necessary to get rid of them completely.

I've been going to OC for 35 years and while I can't tell you about any hotels in OC that have bed bugs, I can say that you should take them VERY seriously!

We got them once from a hotel in Wilkes Barre and you cannot get rid of them! We threw away thousands of dollars in bedding etc. including a brand new king size mattress. We ended up moving and had to wash every single piece of clothing and inspect everything before we moved it -- and we had a very minor infestation.

Whenever I check in to a hotel, the very FIRST thing I do is pull the sheets up and look around the mattress seams for signs of them. Luckily I have not found any in the hotels I have stayed in. We had one close call at the Carousel. I found stains on a mattress which resembled beg bug stains, but no bugs themselves. I went to the front desk and reported it, and I must say the clerk did not surprised. She moved me to another room, which after strict inspection was deemed "bug free".

I also always check Trip Advisor for reviews of the hotel. Many times travelers who encounter bugs will post it in their review.

Anyway, all travelers should check for bed bugs when checking in to a hotle. And note that they are not just in cheap motels. Many luxury hotels experience problems with them as well. They are not like roaches which are attracted to food and unclean conditions. They just want people!

Anyway, that's my two cents. Hope it helps.
